Not badly, I'm not hurt other than a sore thumb, a sore knee and sore shin (but they aren't bad).

I was going for my regular short cycle round the block. There's this neat steep hill that I go down. Well, it was wet and this lady was doing a three point turn in her mitsubishi chariot type vehicle. Well, I wasn't sure if she'd seen me, so I started slowing down. She started moving out, so I started slowing down more but not enough and went into the side of her car.
The back wheel locked up, but that doesn't take much. The front didn't though which makes me wonder if I could've just braked harder.

The lady took my name and phone number, and phoned back later and offered to pay for the wheel. I was a bit worried she'd want money out of me for the small dent and scratch I left in the side of her car, but she was nice about that and said don't worry since it's old. And since I blame myself for not slowing down more sooner (and it's a cheap bike) I said I'd sort the bike out myself.

I'm glad it happened on the pushbike!

There are a few rims on trademe going for about $20-$30 a pair. I haven't checked the bike shops yet. I've also got to get new handlebars and stem. I'll have to phone a few cycle shops to see what my options are, there is an old bike on trademe with no rear wheel that I might get and swap parts off of - might be the best option.

It may be cheaper to just get a whole wheel. When the rim wore out on the back wheel one of my mountain bikes, it was going to cost me $77 for a new wheel, or $200 to get the wheel rebuilt with a new rim.
Is the rim actually damaged, or is it just out of whack? I bent a back wheel quite badly once (perhaps not that badly tho), go it straightened and it was good as new.

If so i have one at home thats over 10 years old that i brought over from teh UK and has seen one trip to woodhill, other than that its been hanging from my garage ceiling! I swapped the bars and forks about 5 years ago and got my stuff from teh bike shop in Ponsonby (i think)

boomer, yes it's a GT Outpost. I got it a couple of years ago second hand for $225, but it was pretty much unused. :)

It shouldn't cost too much to get a second hand wheel and stuff. Really, I should have been more careful.

It is possible to straighten that.... Loosen/delace the wheel, then get the rim as good as possible (gently). Then lace it up again. Takes an awful lot of practice to get it straight, but you can get pretty good if you think about it. Tighten one side to pull it straight, tighten both to correct an out of round problem. You will need a decent tool to turn the spokes tho, as it will take you a long time, and working with crap for that long isnt much fun...

Edit: use your bike as a straightening jig - the pads will tell you if and where it is not straight or out of round.
