View Full Version : BuFfY's first accident

Well today something disasterous happened... I was hit by a car! :crybaby:

Driving to uni this morning in this lovely weather we are having at the moment I was takin' it a bit easier than normal... as ya do.
8am this morning going down Gillies Ave from the north.... got through the first set of lights all good... second set had to wait for people who were turning and then missed the set which was fine cause we were half an hour early so weren't in a rush at all...
Slowly excellerating through the set of lights, I see the traffic is fully backed up on the other side of the road (poor them I think) Then I see this Red BMW sitting horizontal in the lane going the opposite direction trying to get into my lane... surely he could see me! NOPE! even though there was noone in front of me seen, as the two cars in front of me at the lights were turning, this guy decided it would be a good idea to drive straight into me!
My catlike reflexes came into action.... unfortunatley cats aren't morning creatures so I didn't get to move out of the way fully. SMASH!! right into the front of my drivers side... so I pulled over to have a look at the damage... OH MY GOD!
Going about 45 maybe almost 50 and him... well maybe 20k... but the damage is so upsetting...
Anyway I got his details and rang my mum and told her what happened and we are going to sort it out tonight

Fully his fault right? I mean he was coming out of a give way and just drove straight into me... in my lane!
First thing I thought was jesus I need a cup of tea! (Just got home from uni and now have one :))

I have been seriously looking into getting my learners for a bike... hence being on the site... but now I am thinking holy crap what if I get hit on a bike? Does anyone else feel like this or did they feel like this?? I always felt safe in my gorgous little car (Lucy) cause she could protect me but on a bike if I got hit... well I would get hit!
Guess I need to grow some balls huh...

Yep grow some balls, take a hard pill and get a bike. Ive been hit by a car before, didnt hurt as much as i thought it would i just went sailing across its roof:blank: and crashed into the road.

Glad to hear that you are ok.........

"lucy" can be repaired... or replaced..
after the other drivers insurance pays out.

You can get hit crossing the road...

LIFE IS A RISK... we all take risks every moment of the day/night.

So go and take a risk and buy a bike...

Funny thing is that if you were on a bike you may have avoided the accident:

A) after a bit of time on a bike you expect some clown to do something like that and you almost develop a 6th sense for when they are going to do it. (You would have been subconsciously prepared for it)..
B) bikes fit into smaller gaps so you can drive around hazards that you wouldn't be able to avoid in cars.

Sure, if you get hit it probably will hurt you more than if you were in a car but not always.

Don't let one idiot put you off. If you're a good and careful rider what you do on the road can over-ride what the idiots do.

Thanks so much guys... On my way down now to put in an accident claim form... the guy rang my mums partner and said that he was stationary.. but the fact he was in my lane still doesn't help his story! I am pretty sure that he knows it is his fault... and he said that his wife was a doctor so I guess they have a bit of money
So I am off to show my fantastic drawing skills :) Wish me luck!!

BMW drivers are w*nkers! I had one drive into the side of my old car and start swearing at me til I got out of the car and started advancing on him! Got back in his car and called the cops - told them I was trying to assault him! Laughed when the cop who turned up was a mate.

Good you're ok though - accidents happen.

Bit harsh here folks. Lots of people give bikes a name (me, f'instance). And although it's not specifically about bikes, it is in Rant and Rave. Which is appropriate.

Sure, cars get bent every day. But not all of them are being driven by site members.

Obviously a young lady who was/is thinking about motorcycles gives a fuck and is having second thoughts.

And yes it can hurt when we get hit by a car but car and bike crashes often occur for different reasons and smetimes the results are different. I have avoided potential crashes on my motorcycle that I reckon Id hve been stuffed in if driving a car by superior braking, using less road space and also motorcyclists tend to look further ahead and ride more defensively (don't we?).
The only time I was hit by another vehicle (a light truck that lost control on a bend and slid sideways into my lane) in 30 years sent me on a short period of flight while my bike (RD 350) was reduced to a ball of tangled metal and shoved into a small retaining wall. Pinged ribs kept me quiet for a while but I often wonder how I would have fared trapped in a car in the same accident.

BuFfY ignore them. Good to hear you are okay though. I've been in an extremely bad car accident myself. Was very lucky to walk away. In fact Mr Po Po was VERY VERY suprised that I managed to walk away on my own. I still don't own a bike as yet but the plans are there. I am hesitant over that fact though, being that I know it would hurt a hell of alot more to come off a bike, or be hit by a car while on a bike. I guess all I can say is that you do only live once. So you may as well have as many experiences in your life as you can. Like with me, I AM getting a bike eventually. If I don't like it, at least I can say I've had that experience.

My sentiments exactly. I think you develop a 6th, 7th and 8th sense.
Having driven a cage for 30+ years, I have seen (or should I say, have been prepared for) more stupid cagers anticts since getting onto the bike than I ever did in the cage.

You feel secure in the cage so become complacent:zzzz: .

On the bike, you notice and prepare for so many possibilities without even thinking about it. First rule of thumb. If you think that they have seen you, you have made the wrong assumption. Always assume that they are going to change into your lane without indicating, turn in front of you or be general ar@#holes.

BuFfY the main thing is that you are ok.... and that you are still looking at getting a bike to ride...
Write everything down as to watch happened and what was said to each other. Draw diagrams of how it happened as well.
Go back to the accident site and take photo's of the road and accident area.

If you are hurt at all - go and see a dr ASAP especially if your neck hurts - sould be whiplash etc. Same if you start to have headaches, go to the dr asap.

I've just started out riding, and I do feel more vunerable than I do in the car, but that means that I'm more alert than I am in the car, and take more notice of what everyone one else is up to. At this stage I'm a lot more careful about where and when I ride, so I'm less likely to be surrounded by impatient or distracted drivers doing less-than-sensible things.

You are ok, the vehicle can be repaired, if you had been on a bike then you would be smarting but then again you might have avoided it altogether as others have stated.
Nothing can prepare you for the first time you have an accident on a bike, but if you are as prepared as you can be then you should be ok and learn lots from the experience. I have been riding 26 years and had several occasions when I have been knocked off by dumb cagers but I still ride and love it. This morning someone drove into the rear of my car, it just happens.
nothing is guaranteed, live life anyway, do what you love and enjoy it. Someone on site has a signature (sorry cant remember who) something to the effect of ' dont be afraid that your life will end, only that you may have done nothing with it.'
BTW welcome to the site. lol

This is a pointless arguement.
You could have just as easily been reduced to a small ball of tangled flesh and bone.

Poor RD :crybaby:

The whole point of this thread was for me to ask whether other people before starting out biking felt a bit worried about the dangers... don't flame me for asking!!
If everybody worried about travelling in private vehicles, there would be far fewer deaths on the road.
It's why the best safety device ever invented is a 6 inch steel spike mounted in front of the driver's forehead.
