CBR Forks

Hey guys ive just got a CBR250RR 90 and the right fork seal is leaking... onto the brake disk :eek5:

I've read other multiple threads on this so sorry :eyepoke:

I was just wondering roughly how much it would cost to buy both dust and oil seals?

And well im at it, is there anything else i should do?

Is there a best(read cheapest) place to buy everything from?

I read somewhere that some seal brands are bad?

Also if i wanted harder forks would i notice much difference between 10W and 15W fork oil? or would i have to buy new springs?

I want to do all the work myself (eeek $200) and i don't own a torque wrench or a center stand

I live in auckland if anyone could help me sometime :) or lend me a torque wrench

Why do you want to replace the dust seals?

You're looking at approx $30ish up to $60ish for the seals (OE are generally expensive and alternatine brands are usually just as good). Oil will be about $20.

Locals will know better than me where to go but I believe Cycletreads are very good

I just bought a pair of boots off them, Gaerne SP1's

Econohonda for the seals, if you've got beams in your garage you can get some of those strops from the wharehouse to lift the front end. you'll need a few other odds and ends to help tap the new seals down into the forks. Its not that bad as long if you've got a service manual. You might find you don't need to change the oil grade, the stuff you've got in the forks now is probably well past its damp by date.

Just did oil seals on the Yamaha.
$15.00 each for the oil seals and $30.00 each for the dust seals. I didn't do dust seals.

I used a cable puller and strapped the bike up to a beam when I pulled the forks out of the Yamaha. I have that here still if you are interested. It is in use at the moment but should be free in a day or 2.

I replaced my front fork springs on the Honda with some from Robert Taylor and there is a massive improvement.
One note in the literature he sent summed it up nicely I feel. It said "correct spring rate is everything" after the experience with my Honda I believe that is absolutely correct. If you give him a call he should be able to tell you what the correct rate is for your weight and your bike.

Fork springs and spacers and oil were about $270.00 - best money I ever spent.

From memory the original Honda fork oil was 7.5, he recommended going to 10 weight to assist rebound damping with the heavier spring.

I got a Torque wrench you could borrow.

i just had the same thing happen to my CBR400, i bought the seals from Motohaus for $30 and the oil for $20. I'm changing the seals this weekend.

You can get genuine seals from honda for about $30 for 1 fork seal + 1 dust seal. I'd recommend 10w oil - 15 tends to get heads shakes and skips at speed on slightly rough roads (i.e. standard NZ roads). You don't have to any fancy hob nobbery to get the front off - loosen all the bolts your're going to undo (except for the triple clamp), put a jack under the engine sump (oil filter plate is about the right place), jack it up so the fronts just off the ground, loosen the triple clamps, remove front wheel and its all yours. Needless to say, it can fall over quite easily in this position. So be careful - that and don't squeeze the brake lever while the calipers are off.

ok i think ill go to econohonda and buy 2 fork seals, 1L of 10W fork oil (383ml per fork) and see how much spacers will be (will spacers improve or hinder?)

I just want to thank CaN for the incredible and over the top help i got.
I so couldn't of done it by myself but now i reckon i could. (+ a torque wrench)
Even had dinner with his family when we ran over time.
Learned heaps and now my bike feels great handling and brake wise.
however it's rev'ing really unstable and bad though.
Would recommend CaN's autos and restaurant to any one:p
