View Full Version : 250 four lap times of Puke

Weeell. I'm feeling kinda cocky today. I just had my first race meeting, and I out did my expectations, by posting quite a few laps of Puke in the 1.15 bracket.

Just wondering whats the fastest lap times all you 250 fourstroke guys do, and I'm also interested in the twostrokers aswell.

1:20 flat on a RG150. Havnt heard quicker times on a 250 four stroke, 250 two strokes i have seen doing 1:10s and 1:09s and GP250 bikes doing 1:01's...

Very impressive Vtec - it was nice seeing the proud grins on your parents faces and meeting you today.

Depending on the weather I may be out there next weekend. Will be curious to see what I can do.

Gareth_D did 1:28 on a ZXR250 - Gareth's been riding for about 3+ years, you 4+, me just over one year. So I'll probably do it in 3 minutes.:third:

Well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it:wait: and not to forget I'm the worlds slowest Indian too.

Any tips about the track? The condition - bumps on any of the corners, etc? Those ripples on Jennian still there? Is the hairpin very slippery? I heard some KB'er lost it there and another friend of mine "almost died" when the front of her GP bike started sliding on the uphill left turning corner just coming on to the front straight.

Hmm tips about the track... let me think. There's really too much to point out, bumps everywhere have the bike bouncing all over the show. The best way to figure this stuff out, is to start by riding it slow, and then picking it up, until you know the corners, surface, braking points really well. Once you know the track, following someone else around the circuit will help you pick the better lines. Anyways, twosmoker is as good as anyone on this circuit, posting 1:07's on a stock ZXR400. Which seems pretty crazy. If you want professional advice he's the man to ask.

You were doing bloody well out there. First couple of races you were tussling with 140 (Quasievil, or Bret) at the back, but going well.

Last race it was almost as if you had a lassoo around the person in front of you :2thumbsup You hauled in two riders ahead of you I think.

For a standard 250 that you ride as a regular bike as well... awesome stuff.

That is mighty impressive for a 250cc Four Stroke.

What is the topend of CBR250's? I've been told close to 200kmp/h however that'd be crazy considering an SV650 or GT650 doesn't do much more than 200kmp/h.

Don't know what the "actual" speed is. But the speedometer wand will go well past the 180kmph mark, indicating a speed of about 200kmph at between 16-17k rpm.

The bike will accelerate well till about 140kmph, a slight twist more and you'll see 170. Get into a full racing crouch, be steady and give it another twist and you see an indicated 200:2thumbsup

Wow, that makes the Hyosung look bad, it stops pulling at 130 - 140 kmp/h and on a decent sized decline will do 160 kmp/h.

The 6th gear on a CBR must make the difference.

I think someone posted that Gareth did 1:20's or there abouts on his ZXR250, is that correct?

actually I didn't... being my first marshalling experience and first real time at a racetrack, I had no idea how busy I would be.

Next time tho, the camera is a must, but I'll try to keep the blue jumped up bicycle out of the shot.

edit: swanny, ask keystone about gareth's zxr, she was better :D

Keep in mind though guys -He was in a RACE with bales and marshals and ambos there.
Pukie is a pretty unforgiving place to stuff up on -keep that in mind if you're thinking of chasing 1.15

Fuck, that's impressive eh!! The fastest I had heard previous to this was a 1.17... 1.15 is fukin flying...

If you want, you can always lend it to TwoSmoker and see what time he does on it... Then you'll know how fast the bike will go.

fuck mate, my vt250 will pull 160k on the flat and thats a naked bike. i hope yours isnt the faired version.... and its only a 5speed? bloody hell.... whats wrong with a common 6 speed?

i dont know much about puke laptimes but it sounds like thats impressive to me. well done mate!. i should take the bros650 up there when its fixed and see if i can get 2 mins haha:ride:

If I race at Puke again, I know that I can get a 1:14. Firstly I'd take the g-clamp and toolkit and chainlock out of the boot (can't believe I forgot to empty the boot), and secondly I'd take the headlight out. Thirdly I know that I can do better at the section after the hairpin leading up to over the hill. I was leaving too much margin for error. All I need to do is drop 0.17 and I'll be in 14's. Easy.

Yep, I just took the little screw in knobs off the bottom, they still scraped quite a bit on the track though.

Haha, the only things off your bike that I was using was the chain and the rear wheel. It's just nice to know that I've got another engine there, one with a bit more special sauce too. Might even open it up to see if I can sort out that tappet noise. Might take a look at how to adjust the valves aswell.

I am just curious How heavy and tall are you?
After coro loop my left peg was 1/3 the size it was orignally and the right was about 1/2 the size but I didnt get off my bike that much.
Just curious.

I weigh 65kg, and I move my weight around quite a bit on the bike to prevent footpeg scrapeage. Its the key to fast stable cornering I believe.

I must admit they are mounted annoyingly low. Still, it makes it a comfortable long distance bike too. I had found that I was scraping the pegs over the top of the hill on puke at 150-160k/hr (indicated)

Yer but thats a good thing as KK said they make you feel like the man when you scrape your pegs on every corner!

That tappet noise can be adjusted out, it needs a 205 shim put onto one of the (8) right hand valves, the only reason I didn't do it is cause I didn't have one on hand

There is a trackday this Sat. Look as long as you don't push it too hard you should be fine. I feel pretty safe everywhere on Puke even the hill.

How confident are you at braking while the bike is leaned over?? I'm not trying to give you any tips as I can't ride for shit - I'm just trying to gauge your experience level.

Gareth_D did 1:28 on a ZXR250 - Gareth's been riding for about 3+ years, you 4+, me just over one year.

i got my licence in September 2002, rode a 1976 Vespa for 6months, had nothing for 6months, then rode on GF250's commuting up until May last year. I didnt do any 'caining' up until i got the ZXR so technically i have only been 'riding' for 11mths...

either way riding age has got shit all to do with it. It's whether your in it for speed or enjoyment - people like TS, Bruce, Motoracer, White trash etc didnt get into bikes to get around, they got into bikes to go fast... and in some cases, race.

Basically vtec has some serious balls, and has applied his skill, knowledge and advice given to him extremely well and has come out with a top result. and he had a good bike

My 1.28 was pretty average... that was in my second session, a nd i dont think i was pushing my bike anywhere near as hard as vtec was pushing his. Only thing i can do now is get the R6 ready for the track, grow some balls, and try to set some decent times!

Well at your pace maybe... But Puke is one of the most dangerous tracks! Where ever you come off (except for the haipin) You have the chance of hitting the wall, HARD...

But as you said, if you dont push too hard,

Easier said than done thats for sure! First session you go quick second you go quicker by the third your on the edge!

But in saying that my first time at any track i usualy take it easy get to know the track build a mental images second time out I start pushing the limits of the corners. After that I tend to have a mental fight with myself to not push it most of the time i loose!

I don't know what times I was getting, I just wanted to try and go faster and improve my riding, also I had no one to time me. 150 was probably the fastest the bike did over the hill - I always chickened out and braked before entering the hill so couldn't accelerate any harder, I need to sort my transition from the last left before the hill onto the right of the hill.

Reasonably confident, every now and again will catch myself doing something dumb such as braking at the worng point...and standing the bike up, but i am getting more used to it. I am keen to get onto a track where i can push harder knowing there isn't an oncoming car or lightpost to hit.

You talking about me? I remember riding with you boys out to Kaiaua that day. That was when i had first bought the bike, had a bit more time to hoon on it since then!(the chicken strips quickly shrank.

I suppose that is one way to judge ability...chicken strips. I have about 3 or 4mm that i just cant loose on the rear tyre. Any further than that and the rear starts drifting...so need to work on where i put my weight i guess...

Perhaps, but some riders hang off more than others so make have larger chicken strips. The only way to judge your ability is to ride with bigger, faster bikes or good riders on 250's.

I don't know about Tristan as I haven't ridden with him for months. If you were keeping up with Gareth you must be good.

I hang off and get to the edge of my front tyre, so you can tell alot by chicken strips... And Gareth isnt exactly fast...(No offence Gareth)

yes JSG, i am faster than you on a 250, but i am not 'fast' at the end of the day. Sometimes i am just crazy on the road and people mistake that as being fast, trust me vtec, if you had seen the faces of me and my pillion that day you would have seen pure terror in our eyes many a time.

You dont need to hang off to get to the edge of the tyre, but it does help.

hehehe, im not saying your slow either... But yes as you say it is hard to say if someone is fast on the road over distance, someone might go quick around corners, but only make safe passes, where another might be slower around corners and make stupid passes... yet they are still seen as equally quick on the road...
