BigB
3rd April 2006, 07:18
Hi All
Just wondering how many KBer's are heading to the warbirds over Wanaka?? I know off at least 3 and was wondering if there were any more going.
We leave for our big South island adventure on Friday    , spending two weeks seeing as much as we can. Travelling with a mate on his ZZR1100 and both partners.
Just got the Blackbirds seat re done and once again big ups to Mcdonald Motor Trimmers and thier Rider seats, only one word for it "Fantastic":2thumbsup :2thumbsup
So if you see a blue blackbird and a red ZZR1100 both two up that'll be us enjoying two weeks of freedom.
Cheers
Brian

Damn the timing of easter this year. I live only 50 minutes from Wanaka airfield, and for the 2nd Warbirds in a row I'm working right through the event.
However, if any northern visitors want a local ride on any of the days before easter just give me a call (details on this site), I'll be pleased to join you.
Oh, and some accomadation available right here for KBers going to warbirds.

Talking to one of the pilots down there. He said that there was almost one less aircraft to be displayed this year! A slight problem with the engineering shal we say...

Damn Rhino and I are going to miss this one. We went to the 2004 airshow and it was awesome!!! :niceone: Look out for the Lithuanian - Jurgis - what he can do with a plane defies logic and physics!!!
I loved the WW1 planes too. The triplane was described as "Trying to land a venetian blind!!!" :spudbn:

sweet.... big bastards them buggers, they of course will only be doing a fly by (X Dunners, mind you Chch is only 5min's up the rd)
Theres been a little action at Wigram over the last week or so, The Orion (beaut sound for a turb prop) couple a radial powered single seaters, and them bloody obnoxious air trainers
I havn't missed a show for many years and been to every Omaka show, but this year theres no talk about going and I have found since Tim has sold a lot of aircraft that it has lost a lot of its appeal for me....... and :eek5: a few have crashed.
heres a pic of my all time fav... Sea fury, OMG what a sound.

May favouite pic is of the Lavochin La-9 which came here for the 2002 show. It's a Russian WW2 fighter and the only one of it's kind flying.
Here's a pic I took.
Hopefully more KB'ers are going.

I must admit I’m rather fond of the warbirds myself, been to a few of them, hopefully I can get there, unfortunately a cobber is racing in the hillclimb in wanaka on the same weekend and wants me to film that too so I’m hoping to somehow work both. I just brought another camera so I’m itching to find out how it goes. Those WW2 planes put most cameras to the test.

Hi Nudemetalz,
Scorpygirl and i went to the 2004 WOW and the LA-9 was there. John Lamont had a rudder problem while flying it on the Friday practice and managed to limp it back to Wanaka. I will check out my pics and send you any that I have. My eldest son was in the RNZAF and used to work on the Orions. They are a neat plane. I have lots of pics of the P3K if you are interested.

Our whole familys going (by car) it'll be our 4th show and I reccomend you go at least once. Not sure if we'll go Friday (its cheaper) and watch the practice or go on the weekend. The F111's are meant to be flying over both days (sat-sun) and doing a flame out (something to do with dumping raw fuel and igniting it, looks really spectacular from what I've heard. Probably worth the trip alone. Have a safe trip everyone. We'll be in the red toyota motobike:wavey:

yeah smarty pants.... Junkers JU 87 Stuka
Not even close........ the Stuka made a noise to scare people on the ground... the aircraft I posted makes a noise like the stuka due to the holes in the under carage flaps (IIRC) this noise was removed but later put back on the aircraft due to the reason that it made the enemy nervious.
try again BTW its a lot shorta than a Harvard

They were a great aircraft in WW2. Based on the Harvard, the Aussies used them in the ground-attack role against the Japs in the jungles of Borneo etc. Very tough aircraft.
Another of my fav's is the Corsair. This was taken by me at the Classic Fighters airshow in Omaka last year.

The B family were supposed to be going, but we've had a change of plans.
Thought I should mention something; according to The Press, there will be two of the replica 'Munro Specials' used in the filming of Worlds Fastest Indian on display. One of them will do a demo run. But thats not the big news. If the report I read is to believed the ACTUAL Munro Special will be on display. I believe it is the first public showing of the streamliner since it was bought by the Lewis(?) family many moons ago.

I brought this up on the MG forum, and here is the reply from the guy that posted the pics.
Dangerous: The first, and most important, thing you need to do is stop thinking the movie is a documentary. It is a fictionalized version of real life. The movie covers thing that happened on all nine trips. The scene where he set the record of 183.586 MPH was in 1967, the incident with the trailer wheel being replaced by a chunk of wood happen on his drive back to LA on his third trip, the incident with the cop on the highway never happened. Condensing a life as rich and exciting as Bert Munro's into 90 minutes requires a LOT of creativity and a willingness to sacrifice truth for beauty. The bike in the pictures I posted is the bike (chassis and body work) that set that record. In my mind that makes it the world's fastest Indian. Your opinion may well be different. The engine is another story, it may be the engine in the bike in NZ is the one that set the records, I don't know. I know he took the engine back and forth, the bike stayed in the US.
The bodywork on the bike in your picture was replaced (if I understand Marty correctly, the next time I see him I'll ask to be sure) on the first trip. The "triple tail" caused the bike to wobble uncontrollably at the speeds that Bonneville allowed Munro to reach. Marty said Munro just cut off back of the bike and replaced it with part of an aircraft (external) fuel tank. Typical of his direct solutions to problems. Anyway, the triple tail bodywork shows the bike (or at least the body work) in NZ never went fast at Bonneville, it was not possible to ride it at speed.

found a rather large stash of old photos...
first pic is a C-130A model... notice how it only has 3 bladed props, and the wing tanks are on the outside of the outtermost engine on each side, not inbetween the two.
second pic is a formation flyby of 5 DC-3's... something you probably wont ever see again.
I remember there being a couple of pics of a the Strikemasters doing large fly by (11+ of the things), and i've also got some pics of a F-111 that bit the dust off the end of the runway at Ohakea if anyone wants to see them. Quality is a bit ratty as they are scans of 20+year old negatives, but they are there all the same.

True - the car in the movie is a '54 Chev but Burt actually used a '59 or '60 Chev, his Vauxhall in Invercargill was an EIP but in real life there was a PA, there were quite a few 'poetic licence' sections in the moviet.
BTW If any North Islanders are at Wanaka and want to follow the Clutha river downstream to Balclutha they are welcome to drop in. Just call in at the Mobil garage at the North end of town and ask for me (Just a description of my job/bike/hot-rod is enough) but a PM is best so I know you're coming.

Ok you lot here are some more.
First shot is the (50th?) Anniversary paint up of a TA-4K... how many of you had seen this, or knew it existed?
Second is a rather large formation of Skyhawks (outsides) and Strikemasters (inside) - Shit i bet that sounded FARKEN AWESOME!
Third is a shot of an F-111, USAF rather than RAAF i think, that had a double engine flameout just prior to take off at full after burner... note i have drawn an arrow showing where the cockpit pod landed, the canpoy is too small to accomodate an ejection seat, so instead the whole thing separates off!
Forth is a nice shot of an early RAN Sea Harrier next to an A-4K (pre kahu) taken sometime in the late 70's or very early 80's... judging by the style of clothing
Last shot is an upclose pic of the ill fated F-111 again.

did not know that... they would be what GR.9's now? Thats sad to see. Im sure the tornado will cover that role, just means more work for the fighter jocks.
I did know they were having a significant resize approx 2 years ago, reducing the entire air force to only 1/3 or so of its size at the time, this included closing bases and dis-banding squadrons. Im not sure how far they are through it at the moment, but the idea was that better weapons (aircraft) meant they didnt need as much to do the same job.

Yup, it’s the FA.2 & GR.7/9.
Tornados won’t be a lot of good unless they have multiple air to air refuels if the Carrier force is way out to sea.
RAN is suffering the budget cuts just like most nations.

they needed them badly, my old man loved the 727's but said himself that they were well past use by for the air force. I think one sold for about $400,000 :weird:
The 757 is the fast deployment option for the army... imagine that, grunts get to travel in style before going off to fight.
And sAsLEX, dont forget the two insure ones too... dunno what they will be called though. However the layout of the MRV looks bloody impressive. Got provision for the four NH-90's and one SH-2G aswell as carrying troops and those stupid bloody LAVIII's.

The F-111 does a Dump and Burn.
All jets have the potential to do a flame out, and it is NOT a good thing to do at an airshow. It is the equicilet of your bike stalling at the lights when trying to impress the chicks in the car next to you.
There is a high probibility the F-111 pilots are Kiwis, coming for a visit. The truth is they come over lots, but there is no requirement to land for fuel, as they can get back to Oz on the fuel they take off with.
The Americans have 124 or so C5's left.
The reason they don't play with us anymore is not because they are running out of aircraft.
Actually, ask the government why American aircraft don't visit...

Well they are almost that old: The A4 was designed as a carrier based ground attack aircraft in the mid 1950s. They were first deployed on active duty in 1959 and saw combat in Vietnam. When NZ decided on the skyhawk in the late 1960's we received the A4K model.

Bulls is technically my home town. My aunty owns what was the 'Bulls Bridge Cafe' has changed the name though, its where i stay when im doing track days at Manfield.

Well they are almost that old: The A4 was designed as a carrier based ground attack aircraft in the mid 1950s. They were first deployed on active duty in 1959 and saw combat in Vietnam. When NZ decided on the skyhawk in the late 1960's we received the A4K model.
technically we got A-4E's, ex USN ones i think. Then we got the Aussies ones that they didn't want which were G models from memory. Our government just likes to put K's in, however they earnt it with the Kahu upgrade, which has subsequently become the reason the americans are making them hard to sell - they have a kickass avionics suite.

Oh dear, now you've set me a task for tomorrow to look back through my old log books and technical notes. However even before I do that I am still sure, from memory, that we got the A4Ks and TA4ks initially. The ex Aussie ones were A4Ms.
It didn't take as long as I thought, the original ones were indeed A4Ks.

I cant remember the year, but anyone remember seeing the Bleriot replica's fly?
Man it was awesome, the pilot even took both hands of the yoke to wave, both aircraft looked flimsyer than a kite.

Well actually, when we got them there was a 22 year old protester who lay in front of the tractor pulling them off the boat... Na, can't continue with that story, as I now work for her (Ultimately).
NZDF called them A4K's (K for Kiwi), just like the P3K Orion.
They are in fact A4E's, and TA4G's. as pointed out.
I think the only TA4M is sitting in Christchurch Museum. I could be mistaken, as I didn't really care when working on them, because as far as we were concerned they were all the same (or tried to keep them all the same).
Will find out more over the next couple of days to clear things up.

umm they do all the time, Antarctica is next stop from CHCH so you see the big guys at CHCH all the time!
But the reason we dont play with the real toys is well a stupid decision made way back when
The American Aircraft at Harewood are not at play with the NZDF at all.
Yes, it is the closest port to Antarctica, but have NOTHING to do with us in a military sense.
I did neglect to mention that 5 Sqn have been playing with the Americans in recent times.
And that decision made way back when, would be about the time that the deal of the century got canned.

...just like the P3K Orion.....
I have never flow in the Orions, although that was what I really wanted to pilot all along. From memory though, our orions were P3Bs. Certainly until I left the RNZAF we always referred to them as Bs and I can never recall referring to them as P3Ks.

P3K's since a project update, I can't remember exactly what one. They have been known as P3C's aswell (Or maybe NZ4206 was a P3C). NZ4206 was the one we got off the Aussies.

yeh same as the skyhawk K bullshit again... bought as P-3B models... then called P-3K models when they all had some work done to them.
The one we got off the Aussies would have to be a C model, because thats all they have ever had... now called an AP-3C - and very good looking if i dont say so myself.

well the thing that got me was someone on her side of the government suggested halving the number of F-16's to a more manageable size (rumour was 10 single seats and 4 two-seat trainers) and also halving the number of LAVIII's purchased aswell.
This would have had the same saving as just getting rid of the skyhawk/aermacchi fleets.
Thing is now we have no strike force, and heaps (more that we'll ever need) of APC's that dont have any crews to drive them, and will take two weeks at best to be deployed, unless we get C-17s/A300M's or hire the Russian Antonov 124 to move them for us.

Just dont mention how the old M113 is better suited to the Pacific terrain our APCs are more likely to go.......
And we have the mrv to transport them now

lol, yeh i didnt want to mention that. Upgrading the M113 to A3(?) spec, same as the Americans STILL USE would have been a better option and would have retained the quick deployment ability. The time frame i mentioned was with the MRV, if they go to the pacific or Australian East coast its (3-4 days travel) depending on conditions.
At the moment our boys in Afghanistan are using American hummers to get around in.
If i remember correctly, to get an M113 in a C-130 to SE Asia would take approx 14hrs flying + one or two fuel stops. And that includes the crew and troops that are going in it.
For the LAVIII you have to partially disassemble it, squeeze it in the back, and then load up a second flight for the crew and troops, and assembley crew. The crew will make it across the Tasman, but the Herk with the LAVIII falls short of the Australian East Coast by about 300km i think

im sure we can get two off the ground at the same time, but knowing our luck, the one that had the crew would break down en-route so the whole operation would be pointless.

Yep, the bosses decided to focus the HP on the Warbirds traffic.
(and going by reports of other years and the traffic chaos/idiot driving I'm not surprised)
Glad you enjoyed the ride.

Bloody awesome. I was there for the first 2 days, had a blast and will find and post pics soon. I was annoyed that I wasn't organised enough to poist my phone number on here and get in touch with someof you guys... Sorry.
Fucken loved the show though. F111 on the practice day gave me the shits - I was sitting talking up at the fence at the end of the runway (lift off, not the taxi end) and the thing came past with it's arse on fire. It was the first thing to go past that day apart from the odd 172 touching down prior to 10:00am....
Awesome - I didn't stop grinning for days.
