Hi there,

I am a student from Massey University working on a new product development project as part of my final year of study. I am investigating the market opportunity for a manually operated tyre changer that can be used on trail bikes. As part of market research I have developed a questionnaire that I would like to test run. If you have the time, please respond to the following 10 questions, they should not take long to answer. Also, if you have any suggestions for the product of this type or would like to be further involved please leave your contact details below. I will be running a focus group that I need a group of dirt-bike riders to attend...

Would certainly consider it but only if it also address the issue of balancing the wheel after the new tyre is on

Possibly. That's about 7 or 8 tyre changes so it'd pay for itself for sure. Be nice to do it myself too

I've changed pushbike tyres heaps of times cos they are easy :whistle:

Does it balance the tyre?

Is it aimed for using for emergency field repairs, in that case, how heavy and bulky is it for carrying in tool bag under seat?

Could this tool also be used on car/4x4 tyres?

Comments:

I usually only change tyres in the field to repair a puncture. Otherwise it only costs like $20 for both wheels at the shop & is not worth the hassle.

Will there be free beer at the focus group?

Any product trying to appeal to dirt bikers will have to be very light & small enough to be carried easily. It's simple to build a stand to make tyre changing easy at home so to be really useful your product would have to be extremely portable.

The product itself has not been developed yet, but we do have a few ideas in mind. Some constraints however 1. We are targeting the "off-road" market with possible other markets such as ATV's, or other vehicles with tubular tyres. 2. A wheel balancing product is a bit beyond the scope of this project.

Clint - This is what we are looking at. Portability will definately be considered. And yeah refreshments should be in budget! even if there not ill shout!

A balancer is a completly different machine,a delicate and precision device....not something you'd ever want to combine with the rough and tumble world of getting a tyre on an off a rim.

A question for you... How much would you pay for the product you are envisaging?

I'd probably pay about $100 max, but as I've said I very rarely get a puncture & have to change a tyre. The local terrain is not often rocky & as I don't run rim locks I keep the pressures a bit higher that most which helps.
Given I hardly ever use the tyre levers I sometimes carry I certainly wouldn't be lining up to put anything bigger or heavier in my backpack. BUT If I was doing trail rides or enduro's on rocky ground most weekends & getting frequent flats then maybe $300 wouldn't look too bad.

I'm lucky to have a tyre machine the same as the bike shops use for my own personal use,but I'm not always going to have it....and I find it embarassing to take a wheel into a bike shop so they can fit it,a job I am capable of doing myself thank you.I am capable with levers,but would like to have a better system for home use,and for when I no longer have a machine at my disposal.I change my tyres on a whim,and at times I've just gone down the road,come back and changed them again....I can waste a bit of my own time there,time that could be better spent with a cold beer....
