hi
I just picked up my bike yesterday, 1990 Suzuki Bandit 250. Anyway all was well until i went to go for a ride and turned the thing on, had a bit of trouble getting it started but eventually went and it sat at 1,000rpm and when i open it up it sits like a duck (no revs).

It will sit at 1,000 revs for about 5 minutes and then suddenly decide it wants to go...? but will go back to sitting at 1,000 revs again

Obviously im no bike mechanic so if anyone has any ideas what the problem might be please help...

Did you buy it from a bike shop or buy it privately?

If a bike shop then take it back to them to fix it... as it is still under warrenty.

If private sale - did the seller tell you about any quirky little bits about your bike? Like to get it going... does it need the choke on for x amount of time.. lean the m\bike this way for that long and then over that way for that amount of time... as some bike have like older cars little quirky ways to be started up.

Seriously I have have no idea... but I reckon all the lads will have all sorts of ideas.. good luck.

Bought the bike privately, and the guy said should start first time everytime and go like a dream.

Might have to take to a bike shop and see what they think, thanks for the help

Have you checked the choke isnt permanently on.... like it is operating properly and in OFF position when you are trying to get it to goooo ???

Fox Rider

Yeah played round with the choke a bit, doesnt seem to be helping... Just rung bike shops and they said something to do with the compression or fuel problem (strip all the carbs or something and replace everything?)

I can pop around and have a look for ya. Might be something simple.

imdying
5th April 2006, 13:59
Yeah, just let one of us come give it a prod, might be something simple. How'd you get it home? Did it seem ok then? Pretty unusual for something to die overnight, you should be right :)

Fox Rider
5th April 2006, 14:05
Yeah does sound very odd for i to die over night. Got it here on a trailor so i didnt know anything about it.

This would not be the first 250 Bandit that I have heard do this.

I suspect a fuel problem and if it's a used import remember that it has sat in a parking lot (outside) for some considerable time. Fuel turns to jelly and - oh dear!

It could get awful expensive, contact the vendor as private sale or not, it has to be fit for purpose and he said it went like a dream..

Sniper
5th April 2006, 14:12
Paul is right. Unless the ad said "As is where is" the bike must be in a warrentable condition for the road. (I think that is the case, I am open to be told Im worng)

Fox Rider
5th April 2006, 14:18
Just got a new warrent today if that explains anything?

Did you hear it running? Ride on the back? Take it for a ride?

MSTRS
5th April 2006, 14:32
Sure sounds like fuel. First off, I'd take the drain screws out of the carby bowls and with the tank tap 'on' let it dribble out for a bit. Replace screws & try running it again. Often the cause of idling OK but no revs is water in the fuel that can't get through the jets thereby blocking them when you increase suction by opening the throttle

Fox Rider
5th April 2006, 14:38
Yeah heard it running, reved it up a bit and all was sounding and going sweet.
If i knew how to do that i would give it a go but i wouldnt know where to start?

5th April 2006, 14:39
And Paul is correct... a relation of mine works for the civil section of the courts, and has mentioned a few times that even private sales (sans AIWI) must be as specified. 'Goes like a dream' indicates an expectation...

However, before we get litigous, it's probably something simple... get someone to have a poke :)

If you're stuck, give OAB or I a PM.. we're going for a fang tonight, be back around 10, could have a look then.

MSTRS

Someone down your way will no doubt show you how...tis easy. However, if bike ran fine on testing but not after trailering to yours, I would be querying something else. Say...dislodged 'something' when using tiedowns....don't know what tho. Should be a simple fix once you identify reason.

Fox Rider
5th April 2006, 14:44
Yeah true, The guy i bought it off said in writing:
No mechnical problems,
Starts first time, everytime

Fox Rider
5th April 2006, 14:44
Hope it is a simple fix, thx for the help guys

when i took mine for a test ride before i bought it 3 weeks ago it die at every light and stop sign and everytime i allmost stopped really.

before recieving the bikes the plugs sparks and carbies got cleaned (so im told) and it runs allright now but i still get an issue like that every now and again

Fox Rider
5th April 2006, 15:10
Yeah, thats what happens with mine because of lack of revs although the accerator is back as far as it can go.

Bike shop said to get carbs cleaned and stuff so i might try that first

You got a manual for the bike?

Wasp
5th April 2006, 15:54
i find if i hold the throttle full open while its "dead" and slowly ease it off to the point where it starts to "die" and hold it just above that point for abit.

i also find that if im going along the motorway a fully twisted throttle is less power than a slightly less twisted one.

i need a manual too, was going to have to look for one anyway so i'll get around to it soonish.

Wasp
5th April 2006, 15:55
oh yea, have a look around as there are a few bandit 250 threads at the moment, theres an interesting one about a faulty coil give crap power at low rpms

Is the oil at the correct level, i.e. Not grossly overfilled?

Fox Rider
5th April 2006, 19:23
Havent got a manuel for it, beginning to think it would be worth getting one. Checked oil and seems to be fine

Best bet at the moment would be the carbs?

Sniper
5th April 2006, 20:05
I'll come over tommorrow night. What time suits ya?

Fox Rider
5th April 2006, 20:35
ummmm anytime... 6-7pm?

Wasp
5th April 2006, 22:16
was out riding tonight and vaseline warrior said that his old bandit had melted a wire from the ignition to a black box somewhere above the back wheel, apparently it worked fine after it was fixed.

oh yea he confirmed the same symptoms too

Fox Rider
6th April 2006, 08:17
But what is odd is i heard it running and reved it fine before i brought it up here?
So unless the wire melted in the trailor while we were driving..

Ill have a look anyway just in case

Thx
