But open to anyone else who wishes to comment.

How concerned would you be about the prospect of someone with a learner licence (and pretty limited driving experience) driving from Wellington to Auckland accompanied in her first car (a 1989 BMW 320i)? :weird:

sAsLEX

If it was someone I knew I would get the accompanying person to drive rather than a learner in a rear wheel drive car assuming they have no experience on the open road nor rear wheel drive.

D'oh! I was supposed to say UNACCOMPANIED.

Ditto on what sAsLEX said. Give them some tutoring on less crowded roads, but dont let them drive when there is more traffic

EDIT: Bad idea then.

pretty simple then it is illegal and will cost her $400 if caught and then a stranding depending on the cop

3 series, 2 litre 6 (1990 would be a common shape ike all the wannabe ganstuhs hav at the moment) fairly gutless but mosey on up to respectable seeds etc

begguer that, around 8 hours driving or whatever, and on learners on own.... thats just stupid.

There are no police that frequent this site.

She leaves herself open to getting a $400 ticket and 25 demerits each time she is stopped by police.

On another tangent, how would the person who let this learner loose on the roads feel if she never got to her destination and killed herself in a crash (and possibly others) which was due mainly to her lack of experience??

Why does she HAVE to do this journey - and solo? IMHO It is not a good idea.

rear wheel/front wheel drive? There is no difference to a learner except they can do a tighter U-turn in the rear whell drive, the technicalities of the two configurations will be lost on somebody with such little driving experience.

Sniper

what wrong with rear wheeled drive cars
they are safe as any other drive configuration?

Not to the less experienced who have no sense of control in the event of something going wrong.

Well, that's just it - no one has let her loose, it's entirely her own decision. I'm just wondering if anything can be done to prevent her from making this trip because I fear for the safety of other road users. Her intentions are all documented on her blog. She seems proud of the fact that in the two or so weeks she's had this car, she's never once been accompanied by a supervisor. She actually crashed the bloody thing doing a u-turn on the night she picked it up!

I've got all her details, full name, DOB and even a pic of her car with the licence plate clearly visible...

There is nothing wrong with them but front wheel drives are more forgiving when you make a mistake. its easier to control understeer then oversteer when your inexperianced. BUT a 320 beemer is gutless and unless she is running slicks when its pissing down with rain its pretty hard to get them out.
It all depends on the driver. Even if you have fuck all experiance if you drive to your ability you should be alright. Not that I condone this, cause i dont. Its more likely that this person will cause someone else to crash then do so herself.

Don't be absurd, Liz Shaw does what Liz Shaw wants and everyone else can go to hell! :brick:

I am well aware that there are heaps of other things that you must learn when you are driving before you get your license. I really don't want to go through anymore lessons. I want to get my license by next week because I'm driving up to Auckland - easter time, more cops on the road, I should have my license.

lol, the idiot basically admits she can't drive. :weird:

What's the difference between someone with no experience and a good attitude, and someone with heaps of experience and a bad attitude? Odds on either will very easily get into trouble. Perhaps the experienced one is more likely to get out of the trouble though.

My concern isn't so much the technical experience, it's the stamina. If you're not used to driving long distance, it's a big ask to drive that distance solo. Yeah, so what, we've all done it at one point or another, I'm not saying it's unusual. I'm just saying I don't think it's a good idea for her to do it, as any lapse in concentration WILL be magnified by her lack of technical experience.

If you hold a learners car licence and are accompanied all the way by an appropriate supervisor then where's the problem?

The type of car?

Regardless of the car type its up to you to drive it appropriately and your supervisor to take over if you are out of your depth.

i would be very concerned, a 1989 BMW 320i is gonna take for ever to get there, she should try a CBR600F at the very least.

Woah, i'd dispute that any day of the week ending with a 'y'.

Run into snap oversteer when trying to correct a slide in a front wheel drive with foot off the gas?

Rear wheel drive, much more forgiving. Car slides, take foot off gas, turn into the slide, car stops sliding.

madboy
7th April 2006, 15:37
Either way someone with bugger all experience will end up in the bushes or buying a lotto ticket. Even with pretty good driving skills, I've always prefered to push a front driver too hard than a rear driver. Not all rear ends let go progressively, nor come back progressively. Different story once you know the car of course, but she doesn't.

But that's okay, I've seen the nude photos. I'd give her the rodgering of life if I came across her car tits up in the countryside.

I really don't know how we older members survived at all. No helmets, no seat belts, drive/ride whatever you wanted, vehicles with brakes that might stop you in the same suburb you applied them in, no TV ads telling we're time bombs or rabid killer home invaders if we do 11 k's over the limit, we are all miracles.
