Had my nephew's birthday party to go to today in Masterton. On the way back to the Mother-in-law's near Carterton there are two 90 degree bends at Clareville. As we came around the first one a fairly new Nissan came over the centreline and straight for us, not gradually mind, but very, very rapidly. He/she/it (couldn't tell because the head was below steering wheel level) was either asleep or grovelling for a cellphone on the floor of their car.
Heather and I had discussed this particular situation repeatedly and she was driving in this instance. She nailed it and headed for the verge. Which was perfect because if she'd done the standards approved panic stop the dude would have hit us head-on. She said after she was prepared to risk going through the fence and into the paddock to avoid the head-on, and was aiming for a gap between posts.
Isn't she brilliant? :)

The other driver probably never knows how close they came to killing you (both)? Sadly they will do the same thing again and again untill it's too late.
Glad you are both ok

It was all over so quick we didn't even get a really good look at the car. So the dropkick got away with it. :(

I knew a girl who did this in the Manuwatu gorge, was looking for a CD! Wrote the car off and got pretty badly hurt. Kind of wanted to feel sorry for her but what a dumbass thing to do on that stretch of road.

Cheers - we had the kids in the car too - William is 3.5 years old, and Jacob 5 months. We both didn't feel to good for about an hour or two after that.
