View Full Version : Random Engine dying??

Today i was on my way to piecock to see a mate, and as i was going down the straights (at about 120ish) my bike all of a sudden lost power and wouldnt run higher than 6000rpm.

Oh my bike is a KRR150ZX

After starting off again and cruising along at a slow speed it seemed to clear it self out..... and ran fine the rest of the way there and back.

Any clues?? its got me stumped

I have it!

Firstly, it's a Kawasaki. That's the main problem.
Secondly, it's a 2-stroke.

So...Get a Honda and get your strokes upgraded to four.

On a serious note. Fouled plug?

Have you replaced the sparkplug?
Mine was doing random coughing and dying while idling, and it was suggested that the bike might be running too rich. I took the old plug out, and it was covered in oily goop. So far the new plug, and only leaving the choke on for a few seconds when I start it seems to have it sorted out. But if I start having random problems again, I'll fiddle the air/fuel mixture.
Good luck getting it sorted.

Whip the plug out and sandpaper it clean and see if it works. If it does work, it's only a temporary fix and you'll need to replace the plug

Sounds like a typical kawasaki. Follow cowpoo's honda burning guide

Fuel blockage? Have you had the tank off and maybe one of the vent hoses etc isnt correctly routed?

Yes, I agree !!

Sounds like a temporary blockage of some kind. Fuel,, or carbon blocking a power valve maybe? Is your motor running clean enough on the inside, (ie. power valves not gumming up)? These things happen occasionally, if it keeps happening, then have a good look for the problem.

SNAP!!

i got it.

I got my mates infared heat gun and after a good ole thrashing it was only reading 53degrees on the head and 55 on the hotest part of the radiator.

Now the temp guage.

I didnt think it worked until now. At the lights if sitting for like 10min, the temp guage gets to about 1/5 of the way up. at 50kph it falls back down to in the 'blue' bit in the guage. At 100kph it goes all the way down below the blue.

SO, i figured it out to be that becuase it has no thermostat it cools it down too good for the low temp in NZ compared to where ever it was made for.

So, I blanked off 1/3 of the radiator and so be it, it runs perfectly. with the temp guage at 1/4 !!

doesnt foul up and runs mint YAY

thanks for all the in put tho guys ;)

That's useful to know. :niceone:
The temperature gauge on mine never reads anything unless I'm riding around in first for any length of time.
I think the KRR's are made in Thailand, so that would explain the need for a kick-ass cooling system.

I've only seen my temp gauge move once since I've had the bike, pretty normal for a krr though. They haven't got a theromostat at all, so nothing to regulate the temp.

I might do what you've done and make a peice of plate up to block out some of the radiator, since bogging out and (sometimes) stalling is a right pain, expecially with a kick-start.

Yeah, think I need to do that to my RG. It takes a while for it to warm up

I can't find my radiator???

You have a fully integrated cooling system.

You need to fill it by pouring water directly into the spark plug hole. That way your engine will never overheat.

Hardy hardy har har.....

Well... also by getting the engine hotter by blanking some of the radiator off it runs heaps better to!!!

go figure

Not sure why it would die like you reported though? Riding along at 120km/h then cutting out, how would that be temperature related?

the wind flow was greater cooling the bike too much ;)

How does a heat gun work? Where does one find a heat gun? Anyone at the track have a heat gun? How else can one figure engine temp? What should the engine temp be on a Rg/Kr 150?
Is blocking off 1/3 of the radiator an allowable modification in the streetstock class? :spudwhat:

I just pop an old fashoned thermometer up the exhaust pipe, just like a rectal thermometer.

You could always fill the cooling system from the kettle , that way you could be sure it was warming up.

Think he was actually refering to a non-contact thermometer. You can get them at places like Dick Smith, Jaycar, etc.

I don't have a temp gauge on my bike but i reckon its worth a try for me, just dont wanna blow it up, is there a way i could borrow one and attach it mabye?

BNT use to sell them, point a laser beam and pull the trigger and get a digital temperature reading. Mechanics use them too, point at hubs etc and see if any are different temperature. Can also use to find hot chicks.....:innocent:

Yep as far as i know. Alot of the guys running RG150s block theirs off to get the temp up...
