Hi all - I am new to NZ and am wondering what the exact proceedure would be for getting an off-road unregistered bike road legal. What documents are needed when buying and how does the compliance process trace the numbers etc - also, how do you avoid buying a stolen machine etc if there are no documents?

Hmmmm, this would be a bit tricky......unless it has a vin plate.
The only check they do(re; stolen) at vins is make you go to the cops and get them to check their system for any record of it being stolen, then you gotta get 'em to sign it off.
If it has no vin plate I then ya have to vin it, which will be hard if it's a model that was never intended to go on the road, if not impossible.
What are ya trying to do?

Not too sure about NZ, would be a tad tricky I'd suspect but the end result would be awesome. Ioften thought of doing one myself as I see that they do it over in Australia, or at leat used to (unsure if they still do). Good luck dude and if you do pull it off let us know as it might just be the motivation I need to do it myself.:devil2:

I have no particular bike in mind but notice NZ has lots of off-road only bikes for sale. Have a lot of 'spanner' experience so I could easily set on up for the road - just wondering about how to get it registered with a number plate etc. They seem to come in all forms - deregistered, lapsed, never registered, imported, etc. Of ocurse, I could just buy a road registered one but that's just too simple ... no challenge.
