found some 2005 facts,
It is perfectly legal to import, export, manufacture, repair and service radar detectors "in all states in Australia", except Victoria.
Contrary to what you have read or heard, ownership is NOT illegal in any state.
Possession in Victoria is, no matter where it came from!
Eastern states have different laws effecting selling or using detectors "in that state".
Each state law, applies to that state only.

wtf? illegal in victoria? does that still apply??? O.o

I think:
- You will also find that the use of a radar detector in NSW is a VERY large fine.
- They even confiscate it on the spot.
- 100% ILLEGAL.
- They even employ detector detectors.

Lived in Adelaide from 85 till 98 . Was told they were illegal so didn't bother. I never ever saw one one while living there.

I did get my first camera fine there in 88 and not much later was told to remove a bit of plastic that had somehow been attached !!!!!! to cancel out one digit on the plate at 45 degrees (about the angle the cameras worked at the time) G.

BD-i wonder why its such a big deal over there :mellow:they even fine you? ouch ,i didnt know they used detector detectors aswell.its strange how they are legal in some states over there and not others ay.
roo-someone had attached it on your plate? ive never heard of that before untill now,so the cameras dont work at that angle anymore?.
i think ill google the radar laws over there, i wonder if they'll ever change em? prolly not lol

I am heading to Darwin as soon as my house is sold (wife is there already)... Apparently no speed limits, have to be on the lookout for wildlife and trucks though!

A question, can I use a NZ bought GPS in Aus?

Apparently no speed limits,

Well, in the local vernacular:
'Tell 'im 'es dreamin'.'

110kph is the maximum open road limit, nationally - whether it's sign posted or not.

I got followed/travelled with a highway patrol for 3 hours in the absolute middle of nowhere once.

Sorry, my sense of humour ! When cameras first came out in Adelaide the trick was stick something on your plate at 90 degrees ! The cameras were on a tripod on the footpath from memory and you could block one digit or letter so they couldn't get the full number. It was outlawed and you were fined shortly afterwards.
BTW go to Adel, best roads thru the hills and also fine weather !!!!! G.

Not true!
I am leaving for Darwin on 1 July, have done a bit of research and found the following:

Speed
Restricted speed limits apply in all urban areas, and there are speed cameras in the main centres. There is no speed limit on open roads, although travellers should drive at a speed that suits the road, vehicle, weather condition and their driving experience.

and

Australia
Speed limits in Australia range from 40 km/h (25 mph) to 110 km/h (70 mph) at 10 km/h intervals. Generally:

* School zones are 40 km/h (25 mph) during school hours, except in South Australia, where they are 25 km/h (15 mph). This speed limit is also enforced in some shopping precincts.
* Suburban roads are 50 km/h (30 mph) in most states.
* Major suburban routes are 60 km/h (40 mph).
* Major connector roads and smaller highways are 80 km/h (50 mph).
* Highways and freeways are 100 km/h (65 mph).
* National highway routes are 100 or 110 km/h (65–70 mph).

Some states do not have 50 km/h zones, and those that do have only introduced them in recent years.

It is not uncommon to see 70 km/h and 90 km/h limits on some roads, where a higher limit is deemed too dangerous, yet a lower limit is unreasonable for the traffic.

The Northern Territory is an exception, as there is no speed limit on the highways.

Speed traps are used in almost all areas of the country. Tolerance is from 8% to 10% in most states but only 3 km/h in Victoria, an issue which has caused a lot of controversy.

:nya:

Will be signing in from Aus as soon as I arrive there, have a GS1200 lined up for a test ride on Monday 3 July!

Till later

Good luck - you'll need it.
The national Speed limit on ALL roads is 100kph Unless signposted otherwise.
BTW - There are very few sealed roads in the NT other than the National Hwys.

Detector detectors use a system called VG2, many high end detectors are immune to this.
But I won't buy another one for you if they getcha.

YOU can get radar detectors that turn off when they sense a radar detector detector.:doobey:

Darwin - just up the road from me! (sort off)

Watch the roos - dusk and dawn are particularly bad - I had one close call this week and a brand new Falcon ute had a nice indentation in his bonnet further along the Toodyay road with an old man roo lying on the road.

Its worse where the bush hedges right up to the road

They are talking about banning detectors in WA but its only talk at this stage

Dave, 4 lines down and you will see that it is stated
The Northern Territory is an exception, as there is no speed limit on the highways.

Ah well, enough of that!

Basically I am going to Darwin, well, to be more exact, Batchelor!
My wife was offered a position at the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education. This was/is an opportunity that couldn't be turned down due to the high salary, etc... Also a break from the headache inducing corporate world (She is a CA).
Soooooo, instead of telling me how crappy the place is, why not share some good things?
Weather wise, it is the same as we had when we were in South Africa, we both spent time in Zambia due to our fathers being a Geologist (her) and a civil engineering graduate (me), we lived in Durban and my parents had a game ranch in Hluhluwe.

Ok, this is long enough for me for now...

That's a tough question.

I do recall reading about the USA developing an anti anti-missile missle. When tested it successfully shot itself down. :blip:

I agree, we will look at this as another adventure...
Wife has been there since beginning of Feb this year, so she has a lot to "show and tell" when I arrive.
She has started flying training (each our own toys, hers is more expensive), and has also completed her 16th skydive/jump!
WoooooHoooo:doobey:

Just had an old mate visit from Adelaide last week. He reckoned all the roads in the hills are now 80 kph . Seems we are not alone with our tax system here. There are four main roads out of Adelaide leading into heaps of great riding roads, just like having four lots of Rimitukas. Gaz. :blip:

When I was there last week I noticed some other bits (out toward the Barrossa) are 110 Km though.
Seems we can conclude speed only kills if you are in the wrong place....

I was 15 mins from the Barossa for 12 yrs but 40 degrees in leathers ain't much fun. Gaz.

We did a bus trip wine tour out to the Barrossa and on the way up the "River" (?) Torens, I thought the road would be good on a bike so long as you don't meet a bus comming the other way.
Some of those gums beside the road had abviously been there for ever.
Speed signs appeared to be 80 approaching towns and throught the bendys but 110 most other bits.

40 degrees would be a bit over the top in leathers would need to keep the air flowing past.

At about 38 degrees upwards the wind effect is worse than the ambient temperature. My riding kit over there was almost non existent compared to here.
I've ridden through Port Agusta/Iron Knob at 49c in the rain. 'Interesting' it was. Felt like lungs were full of water.

Car owners were ofering to swap vehicles at the roadhouse.
