View Full Version : weird tyre wear

Yeah, yeah i know another f'in thread on tyres, but...

I left Rotovegas on Sun thinking I would get to Te Araroa (600k return) and back not a problem, well maybe borderline, with 3mm tread left on the rear, but by Te Kaha (160km approx), it was obvious(sp) that I had been very optimistic.

But this is the weird thing, it was not going bald but shredding bits and showing the steel belt in the treaded part itself (see pic). I've never seen this before, and was wondering why. Tyre not hot enough? to old? what?

Any tyre experts out there?? It's a Diablo Corser 180, 17.

Just little moments where it would sorta move abit.

My Diablo corsas did the same thing, although I took them a fair bit further.

Did you have much roadworks? that seems to shred them when they're nearly finished.

Yeah there was abit.

Looks like it's the norm from most of the reply's.... oh well time for a new one.

My opinion... tyre is just old and rooted. In my experience once the tyre gets low on tread it looses heaps of grip, and chunks start getting ripped out exposing the steel belts underneath. From there it aint long until you start loosing all your air.

Tyres starting to shred like that is often due to a shagged rear shock.
From the photo I'm guessing your shock is so stuffed that it transferring way more forces to the tyre, thus the rubber starts tearing off the tyre, esp from the tyre groove edges.
That is why the damage is worse right on the area you accelerate hardest on whilst still leant over...basicly the tyre is unable to track properly over the road surface and suffers badly as a result.
I do not see any evidence of tyre delamination from the photo.

I'd say this guy knows his stuff!
A modern radial tyre is spent grip wise by the time it's two thirds (if not by half way) worn, but that's no excuse for what's going on there.

His suspension was getting quite a workout, the road was bumpy.

I had the exact same problem with my diablo.

Hmmm, the shock seems alright, but then I'm not sure how to tell if it is....I've got it setup pretty hard.

I've got it ... pretty hard.

so that's why you always out ridin'! :blip:

i reckon it's the shock too; either gettin old (it is a '97, innit?) or set up too hard
i'll have a look-see at home for some PB suggested settings

still, it's a bit weird how it happened off-center, and in an area with lotsa tread left...

Get a refund!!!

Pirelli's are shite. Get some Pilot Powers next time.

I had Diablo's on one of my K5's and they slid around like WINJA in a paddling pool full of jelly. Front and rear.

Now that would be a sight wouldn't it. :)

All reports on Pilot Powers are good. Might give the suckers a crack on my 1400 but I'm worried about wear rates.

Unfortunately, unlike fine wine, oil does not improve with age.
Standard shocks are made to a budget.
One of the major differences between a standard shock and an expensive race shock is the material they are made from.
The lower spec material standard shocks use contaminate the oil quite quickly, and this downgrades the shocks dampening ability. It costs about 1/3 the price of a new rear tyre to get your shock rebuilt with fresh oil and nitrogen. When was yours last done?

Cranking up the compression on a sad shock to compensate is a little like shitting in the bed, then throwing a new mattress on to cover it over, the stink is still there and your sure to shit in your bed again next time!

When was the shock overhauled? Not since I've owned it! I'll get on to it. Thanks sugilite.

Dover, I've never really had a problem on the pirelli's, but I'm thinkin I might have to give them powers a go.

SOUNDS LIKE BULLSHIT ,AT THE SPEEDS YOU RIDE AT DOVER THEY WOULDNT SLIDE EVEN IF THEY WERE COVERED IN HALF THE JELLY FROM MY POOL EVEN WITH THE REST OF THE JELLY POURED ON THE ROAD

If they're good enough for Irish road racers and the IOM boys....they're good enough for me!

Mind you - i wouldn't say no to trying some on a K5!
