Girls, what's up with the boys and their lids?

Okay, this isn't about anything serious, technical or interesting. It's just a little peev of mine that i thought i'd share with the girls.

Imagine this, your riding down the road and you see a GSXR (you know the blue/ white one) with someone about to get on it. You pull over and pop your visor to hear it start. Just as your getting ready to follow it up the road someone mounts it with a red/ yellow helmet ... ???

It never ceases to amaze me how so many boys have lids that don't match their bikes :nono:. We're talking about spending thousands of $$$ on the machinery, matching riding gear and alas, a gorky lid to spoil the image.

:whocares:

I do. So much of riding a bike is about expressing your pesonality through your bike, your leathers, boots, sunglasses etc. How many of you have seen HD riders wearing Bill Bass or a Ducati rider in 12 up boots with buckles and flames up the side.???

Now i know i'm gonig to catch some flack about riding a GN and it's deserved. Hell, my seats from a dirt bike and is held on with a cable tie. None the less, my riding gear matches my bike and my helmet just looks hot. Hence the number of people that wave at a girl riding a shitty GN.

So come on boys (and a few girls) get to it. Let's see some sexy lids please!

I think id find it hard to have a matching helmet with my bike. It is a myriad (sp?) of colours. And anyway IMO helmets are there to protect your head, im not really too interested in what they look like as long as it does the job when if and when it has too...

Helmets are always a personal colour choice. All racers have their own designs and they never match the bike as they could be swapping to a different team the following year.
Do you not watch bike racing???
Its a little bit naff too, to have fully matching gear.....

A matching packet is nice on the eyes I admit, but I tend to make my assessment based on how they ride.

Matching gear and riding like a twat doesn't really work for me - they have to at least be able to keep up to make the grade...

Most of my gear is red-black and white. Never noticed until a mate pointed it out. I feel 'wankerish' when I wear all my gear. But I got each peice super cheep and at different times. I'm not complianing.

Well thats two of us with *image*...
My bike is metallic black and white and I have a white helmet..

First helmet was metallic black..
Second helmet and the one I use (third helmet) now is White.

As you can see here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=30327&d=1145333413) I match my bike (On the right) perfectly. The double thumbs up gesture only emphasizes the completeness of my package.

But they are usually the goodies. My dilemma was i had a nice Arai helmet, then replaced the bike. Luckily, or tossily (sp?) my helmet has all the colours of our flag so matches a lot of bikes. Especially if they are red.

Now though I feel too co-ordinated and conformist....

Rosie
19th April 2006, 10:19
My bike and helmet are both silver, but that was co-incidence.
As long as my bike and gear don't clash horribly, I'm not too concerned about matching, more concerned with being visible on the road. Apparently the silver helmet and red/black jacket combo are fairly visible. And since I only have one set of gear at the moment, I like it to look moderately normal, so I'm not walking around the supermarket in a kawasaki green racing outfit or anything. Although if I did walk around in tight green leather with 'let the good times roll' emblazoned on my rear i might make some new friends :blip:

I haven't really noticed other people's helmets much. When I was buying my helmet, some of the other ones I tried on had exceptionally ugly graphics on them, so I wasn't keen on them, but I probably wouldn't notice if I met someone else wearing one.

Just goes to show how "image" is so important to some. What makes me laugh is the guys with all the matching bike, leathers, helmet, boots, gloves & knee scrapers look down their noses at the lesser mortals without colour-coordinated gear like they are the scum of the earth. Get them on a twisty bit of road & watch them nana their way around.

I tend to go for an understated look, brightly coloured leathers and helmet are not for me. Rode HD's for yrs and even resisted the urge to cover my jkt with pins and badges ( unlike aLOT of HD riders! ). The fact that my Bike is Black and my 3 jkts are Black , Black/Silver/White and Silver and my Helmet is Black&Silver... just pure coincidence... I just happen to prefer Black and Silver... If my bike was red I would STILL have a Black&Silver Lid and STILL ride in Black/Silver...

I have a black leather jacket, black gloves, black boots, black pants BUT YES I have an expensive MATT black lid. Goes well with the all gold Katana and besides I freaked out when I was looking at new helmets and some of the styles are dorkish beyond my mere riding requirements. Be alright for Josie and his techocoloured coat to attend a christian revival concert, but not my scene. I just want something that looks good when I am NOT on my bike. Thats when most riders are socialising arent they?? Still, I do see your point because some stuff I see on online auctions secondhand is awful.

G'day,

It's fine and dandy to say that guys look like crap if their gear and helmet doesn't match their bike. HOWEVER... the gear isn't all about looks - whatever happened to 'safety first'? :spudwhat:

I can understand that most riders will try to match their bike, but it's not always possible. Because of this exact reason (and not wanting to look like an uncoordinated cock), I opted to buy a plain black Alpinestars suit to match my "custard" coloured bike. The cool thing about the black suit is that I get away with a really loud Suomy replica helmet because it doesn't clash with anything. Bugger wearing a plain black helmet to match my suit. My last helmet was black and I got sick to death of it.

I don't give a shit if the guy doesn't have his "image" sorted out - my first priority is having a good time, and doing it safely.

I used to have the blend in helmet, but it was to say the least - boring!

Besides, I went for a topline helmet, safety was my first consideration and I wanted something more personally appealing.
I believe you can get away with it as long as you have plain black leathers. (See my profile pic).

Rosie, Your missing the point, Kawasaki Green racing outfits let you blend into the veges section at the supermarket after doing runners on the parking wardens :shifty:

In regards to the original post, I usually changed my bikes a lot faster than my helmets, and inevitably I would have used every cent I could get my mitts on to obtain said bike.
Color co-ordination was not a luxury I could afford.
Hmm, sets of tyres to keep the wheels turning, or a color co-ordinated helmet? It was never a hard choice :scooter:

However, with unlimited funds and at somewhere like motomail, I'd definitely enjoy picking out good looking matched gear.

But each to there own.. and I might have a giggle at some of the colour arrangements but its all good in my books.

It's a question of cost. It's nice to be colour co-ordianted, but a bit expensive. My first bike was red, and after my (orange) helmet was stolen, I bought a red one (but black leathers). When I wrote the red bike off, the next bike was mostly silver, so I spraypainted the helmet to match (easy enough, and cheap).
When I rode the XBR500RS Mutant, all I had was some crappy old second (or third) hand helmet, befitting such a crap bike. I bought a white helmet with blue and red stripes (ordered in especially) to match the white/red/blue VF500. New boots were (coincidentally) black with blue tags. My wife bought me some blue AGV gloves for a birthday present. All good.
When the VF was replaced with the VFR, a new helmet was due. I found a nice black AGV with gold and silver graphics, that matched the black with gold strips/decals and silver metalwork. AGV gloves were shot, so I bought some Spidis in black/yellow/silver/white. Jacket, pants and boots were black. :niceone: Then I cocked it all up by buying a red and black jacket, so I wrote off my VFR and bought a red VTR1000: all good again. Then I broke the helmet, so I bought a multicoloured one (blue, red, yellow and silver stripes) and some black gloves. Good idea, because it went well with the red VTR, and now goes well with my blue VFR800.

But it's all getting too hard and too expensive keeping up with gear, so I'll stick to black in future, apart from helmets. When I buy a new helmet, I'll look for summat blue-ish.
Or not.

No matter what style I put on in terms of leathers it still don't make up for the fact that my helmet, plain white shoei as it is, looks HUGE. Perhaps I should have gone for a black one as black is more slimming...

........well i reckon there is nothing sexier than a man in leathers and a nice lid always works to finish off the look.........adds to the mystery..........bikers are generally pervs!!!!!!!!!that includes me..........

you girls look far better in plain black leather, though I have to agree theres also been some talk lately of several beauiful scooter ladies around Wellington wearing short dresses. Try not to be a prev but somethings no man cant turn away from. Has anyone ever wondered why all the main Jap makers started to bring out multi coloured artie designs the last ten years or more? Could it be to sell 'sexy' looking machine to our wonderful sisters whom are taking up this sport in large numbers? I have a neice in Akl whom rides a GXSR1300 and she would think my poor little gold 600F is a toy I suppose. Some of you ladies are riding serious hardware.

Did you look in an Arai catalogue???
How about some of these?

OK, the last one is out of a Harley catalogue.....
hmmm no 1 & 2, & 6 aint bad, but dunno about the others. But having said that they still have to fit my head and the only helmet i liked (and could afford!) was the Shoei, and they dont make that in anything resembling orange

Tsk Tsk girlie! You should know by now that Black White and Orange are THE OFFICIAL Harley colours Haven't I dragged you to enuf Harley rallies??...suggest you check out some of their catalogs, just cos it ain't on the shop floor doesn't mean its not available! :-)
And just so we're clear... Buell colours are Blue and White...
Agree with ya about Black tho, it goes with everyfink Darlink!
Didn't know that HD did helmets...learn something new everyday huh?
Yeah, and blue and white def wouldn't go with my bike so i got one that had cherubs and skulls instead...much more ME! hahaha

so I'm not walking around the supermarket in a kawasaki green racing outfit or anything.

Hey,

I resemble that remark! I once had a bright green pair of motorcycle boots. this was in the 80's and in Fiji where anything but black was considered cough, cough, flambouyant!

I tried to change the colours but the green kept coming back.

I'm one of those Blue/white Gixxer riders.....now complete with clashing helmet.

I used to have the blend in helmet, but it was to say the least - boring!

Besides, I went for a topline helmet, safety was my first consideration and I wanted something more personally appealing.
I believe you can get away with it as long as you have plain black leathers. (See my profile pic).

I think your ARE the Gixxer rider she's talking about.

Imagine this, your riding down the road and you see a GSXR (you know the blue/ white one) with someone about to get on it. You pull over and pop your visor to hear it start. Just as your getting ready to follow it up the road someone mounts it with a red/ yellow helmet ... ???

Finally, I found out who you talking about.

But I ain't giving you his name or number that easy!!! :nono:

One of my interests is in dragon artwork and this actually works for me. Its quite cool. The brand is Shark? so is this their model or have you added the artwork? I have two lids - HJC matt black and FFM black and have resisted the urge to stick something on them though theres a couple whom design and sell bike decals on TM. Similarly, the GSXF has a lot of coverage begging for some fine decals but not sure but doing that either. Might get away with a small dragon on the front side fairing perhaps. Do they come off OK do you know??

not artwork on closer inspection. Must have cost a bit. I think I paid $300 for the matt black model but safety first and to be honest, it was the only one in the shop that actually fit properly. gee ... some of them were suppose to be the same size but were completely different in fit. Think about what these things use to cost before a lot of the import tax was removed though. Still my head is worth more than $300 anyway... I think the poster said $100,000.

the ideal rider would have a hat to match his bike, of course that would then be a black hat. I learned a long time ago that boots had to be bought tight in order to not be sloppy - if they fit perfectly in the shop they ended up oversize later. So I did the same thing with my hats, that last Shoei XR8 so was damned uncomfortably tight for the first 2000ks. But then I rode around the east cape in the rain, and I think my head changed shape to suit it. It then fitted (fat?) perfectly for 128000km, and saved my life when I Tboned the drunk driver who ended my riding career.

Of course some would say that black hats and black bikes are hard to see, and we ought to dress like flourescent penguins, but actually the drunk that hit me was enjoying a sunny waitangi day afternoon, and I dont think he would have noticed me any more in dayglo puce or lemon.

So what happens if I accidentally went the other way??

My Black pants, black/red jacket and grey/black/red helmet DIDN'T match my old CBR thou' (red, white and blue), but now that I've got a black/red GS1200SS I can't help wondering if I look like a complete tosser???

Might be time to get old the old black leather jacket again... but it doesn't have armour and it's shrunk around the waist area somehow...:innocent:

I wanted a helmet with a clip so I went to a wholesaler and got an HJC, they only had a silver/grey/black patterned one but I figured "hey, my bike is black, my gear is black, it will match wont it?". Has been a constant source of embarrassment ever since. I even had it replaced with insurance after a crash and they replaced it with THE SAME COLOUR!!!

Match my helmet to my bike?
What the?
Black goes with everything!

I don't want a red, white and blue helmet with bits falling off/out with grazes up the sides and a visor i can barely see through.
I tried matching it up but the wheels kept falling off cuz the glue melted my helmet. i had better luck with the engine bungy corded to the back of the lid but it just gives me a headache and the girlfriend keeps nicking it as it vibrates better than her cell phone

Theres this guy (girl?) that rides past my work on a daily basis on a GN250... with a Rossi Helmet... whats with that?

For the most part I've been using plain black helmets, nothing to do with my bike colour, but moreso until i can save enough to get the helmet I actually want... which will match my bike :) (but then anything goes with black aye)

Heck ... I could only afford a $300 lid but I would spend a hell of alot more if I had the $$$, not that it guarantees your going to survive a bad event. An old riding friend always use to say that he thought his head was worth than anything he could ever pay for a lid. In other words, its nothing to do with the bike... its either a smart safety move, a borrowed lid or perhaps the parents paid for it??? Or perhaps their other bike is a Borough Superior???
I mean what do you have to wear before you look great on a GN250?

Sorry NC ... you saw the point too first.
