Australian cheerleaders have been banned from baring midriffs by officials of the sport who fear displays of skin may encourage eating disorders.

Gymnastics Australia has ordered cheerleading troupes to find new uniforms by the end of the year.

Nerine Cooper, national cheerleading manager for Gymnastics Australia, said the decision, which followed similar moves in the United States and elsewhere, was needed because cheerleaders often performed in front of family groups.

"We don't want girls to feel under pressure to lose weight because of uniforms," she told Sydney's Sunday Telegraph.

But Lisa Ince, head of Sydney Promotional Dancers, said the order was unfair.

"It's ridiculous really, if the thinking is that a midriff is offensive, then every dance school and athletics club would face the same restrictions," Ince said.

The ban will affect about 105 teams registered with Gymnastics Australia.

In the United States, the National Federation of State High School Associations issued a new rule for the 2006-07 school year requiring that cheerleading uniforms cover the midriff.

I don't really give a shit so don't exactly have an opinion.

However, I can't quite grasp what the point of doing that is, it seems to have two angles which I cannot distinguish.

A.) Are they trying to discourage audiences from taking up eating disorders in an attempt to manifest the physical image portrayed by the cheerleaders, or;

B.) Reduce the pressure on cheerleaders themselves by discouraging outfits which reveal a lot of skin. Such uniforms would presumably put said pressure on cheerleaders to maintain/loose weight by way of an eating disorder.

Either way, what a waste of time. They should be riding their motorcycles (or buying a motorcycle and riding it) instead of worrying about this bullshit.

The whole population is getting fatter not thinner. Clothing sizes have been resized so that a woman's size 10 was formerly a size 8. F*cks sake we should be promoting fitness not abolishing it. Our university "thought factories" have been teaching this sort of crap thinking for at least a couple of decades. It does not suprise me that an Aussie has escaped into the wild and has actually done something based on the ideas. It is disturbing though.

I am not sure I go along with Sniper on this one. I think the solution might be to provide more funding for post graduate positions within the institutions themselves. That way they just sit in there talking and writing to themselves. Might stop more of them trying to get into politics as well. :ar15:
