Mac geeks - a font question

I have a client whose marketing guidelines call for the use of 'paralucent' font - which they supply as a file with a ttf extension.

I can't open it anyway - but This is a true type font file yes?

I have spent the last 15 years avoiding using true type fonts for output in adobe postscript devices and software. If there was ever a problem with an imagesetter ttf were often the culprit.

So I'd rather not use it.
friction ensues.

Anyone have a postscript alternative perhaps?

and why not use ttf's? they can be troublesome in eps files, but that's about it..

I've got a few squillion if you care to elaborate, else I have software (if I can dig it out) for OS9 (so I can't use it) which I can give you, which will down anything to fonts you ever wanted to (Fontographer)

And exactly - I print a postscript file to distiller to make the output .pdf. ie an eps - which is where they fuck up and why I don't want to use it.

Back in the beginning of all this process ttf was what the amateurs used only.

TTF stands for True Type Font. Figured that one out all by myself. Green rep please sir.

best bet is to get yourself a font converter. ttf fonts aren't great on playskool machines... er - i mean apple macs :blah:

You could try all the usual tricks: see if it works to a postscript printer first, you may find it will be ok, most of the TT fonts have improved over the years.

If it doesn't work, convert the text to paths/outlines, not a great option if you have lots of text, but will work.

If that doesn't work, get that copy of fontographer and then you can actually open the TTf and convert it to a real postscript font and use that instead. I've done it a few times with some clients fonts.

If you're still having trouble next week (but I'm on hol till wednesday) send me the font at work and I can prob convert it for you, Fontographer is a great wee tool!

I think the best bet is not to use them.

Interesting that my playskool machine has most of the cool computer gigs in NZ motorcycling locked up in its little lunchbox. :yes:

We run a PDf workflow at work and the only font issue is FreeHand MX and double byte characters. That's a FreeHand issue.

TTF don't cause us any issues, but we're OSX all the way. Be sure to subset the fonts when you embed them in the PDF or the RIP *WILL* try to swap them for the ones it has in it's memory.

I have Fontographer and can convert it if you wish too. Email it to my KB address.

Its from an OSX Machine and my work box is 9.2

OSX sorted out ttf..
for some reason, i read the font name as a 'peculiar', as in a peculiar font..
don't ask why

all the fonts are at work, I'll have to have a look in the morning and see how I can help

Not that I'd ever advocated piracy or nufin, but it looks like you can grab Fontographer 6 via emule.
