We are leaving at 5am because we have to cross Arthers and Porters pass. Anything can happen with the weather up there so delays are more than likely.
What i was thinking of was if we had a good run we could wait at Rakia for you guys, It wouldnt be worth you guys waiting for us tho, especially if the weather gods dont like us very much.

Have been planning on heading away from home around the 9 - 9.30 area. The blokes form Ashvagas haven't finalised a time as of yet, but their on the fast trip mode anyhow so that isn't really my preference for heading down to the Brass. Plus i may be two-up anyhow (mate is acting like an old woman & can't make his mind up).
But if there's a link-up happening at Rakaia that would work better (I'm only 5mins further down the road).

Seems like there will be a few of you guy's and gal's staying at Kurow on Friday night, presumably at the motor camp.
All things being equal, I might just take a ride down there (27km) and say g'day if there is anyone about.
I usually go to the Brass for a day trip but never make up my mind about when/how/what until the last minute.
So many people, the weather so changeable, who knows, I just wing it.
Hope you all enjoy yourselves and have a good trip. :blip: Cheers John.

Just finished work on getting the bike ready, changed oil, more glycol, checked stuff etc and was about to check and oil the chain when I noticed what looked to be a rust patch on one of the rollers.
Well upon closer inspection (can't see too well up close now-a-days) the reason it was rusty was that the chrome finish on a whole bunch of the rollers is worn thru to steel. I then poked around a little and its all as loose a goose. The sprockets are fine and there is no point in shagging those with a 4000k round trip so its a new chain this week.
I've got a merry old pile of stuff growing in the corner to pack too.

Well when a time is finalised for departing ChCh that will be good, it's roughly 20mins to Rakaia from Rolleston.
By the Mobil servo is probably the easiest place to meet, it's easy to spot (halfway through the town on the main drag, would say just past the salmon but it's away getting a $120k restoration).

I'll be on the road in me 'lorry' between Dunedin and Amberley (or somewhere like that) from 10am to 4pm.
If you want to know what the lorry looks like see post #158 on this thread.
Friday morning it's on the road again to Blenhiem so keep a look out eh?

Looking forward to seeing you again too fa queue but like I said, I make up my mind at the last minute, usually waiting to see what my son in law is going to "actually" do, before "I" decide.
The "Cat" belonged to a young girl about five doors away and she packed a shitty because he was coming down here!
I think she took it away to Timaru or somewhere, shame because he conned me into letting him in while Mrs O/r wasn't looking but then he got cocky and tried coming in when she was home, not a good idea! I knew nothing of course. :innocent: Cheers John.

Not long now, I am realy looking forward to the trip this year (well realy every year I have), but esp with a new bike this year, and I realy enjoy the roads down there.
Leaving Rangiora about 10ish on Friday for Oamaru, the Sat morn to the site, a one day trip home on the Sunday. I kinda hope that the weather is both ways, it is nice if it is mild and kinda like autum, and then again, let the rain/snow fall, either way whatever is thrown at ya adds to the experience.
Hope everyone has a great time, and makes it there and back unscathed, both bike and body.
C-ya there.

Although this weekend is probably not going to have an ice problem from what the forecast indicates.

29th May 2006, 21:39
Oh, I hadn't heard that section of road reffered to as Thompson's Track before. In Central Otago Thompson's Track is the dirt road from Tarras to Omakau over the Dunstan Range, and hits the main road only 20 minutes from the Rally site. Its a very scenic trip, icy as hell during winter, and climbs to 4200' above sea level.

Tis true, but T/T is a crap piece of road to start with  and the shelterbelts & hedges along it & it's direction means once said spots get iced they stay iced all day (I'm a local so me knows ) it's enough to catch cars on the odd occasion.

Madness I know but we really need to be there by 12-1 to get a good look around :scooter:
:scooter: Well I,m just surfin killing time waiting for family to wake up so I can do last minute stuff on my bike without waking them up. Meeting three other mates at Drury Autobaun at 10 and were off to the Monkey, probably the first bunch to leave from Auckland. So maybe might see some of you as we get closer sort of be like the migration in "Ice Age". Just like a big bunch of squirrels heading off to get a badge at one of the colder places. Pretty dumb really. At least its bit of a challenge, lots of workmates think its too difficult it might rain or there might be ice or what if my bike breaks down . Like I tell them heck if I didnt go it might rain here and I wouldn't be able to mow the lawns anyway.:whocares: Well thats pretty profound stuff from me see ya there.

Talking last night with Shayne (this is his 7th) and he had a really good story about heading out on the pig route in a recent trip, snow, ice, sleet etc. Something about the snow plow running off the road! Anyway he dropped his BM and knocked a hole in the rocker cover, araldite etc etc.

I was also told today that someone was caught doing 160+ down lineside rd, leading into Rangiora this week on one of the days of intense fog.... bugger that, kinda stupid on a busy rd like that.

I'll be there, aiming to arrive post-lunch on Saturday; will seek the flag!
I'm unsure of the route I'll take at this stage. Had initially thought anti-clockwise loop, south down the west coast and back home via the east coast, but might go the other way. Sounds like most of the traffic will be south towards the rally down the east side.
Sounds like Thompsons Track will be slow and icy, not to mention having to put the bike on the stand 34 times...not so easy on my bike.
Any locals able to fill me in on what the road is like from Roxburgh to Ranfurly? That is, Lake Onslow Road, Deep Creek Road, Puketoi Runs Road?
Thanks

and another question; where/what is the Pig Route?
Jantar
31st May 2006, 21:48
The Pig route is the State Highway from Palmerston to Ranfurly.

Thanks
Would really not recommend Lake Onslow road at the moment unless your tyres are A1 for off-road.

Would really not recommend Lake Onslow road at the moment unless your tyres are A1 for off-road.Continental TKC80 front and new Pirelli Scorpion A/T rear; more a street use combo. Probably not the best, then.

:wait: OK I know my bike has a bit of a lean on it at times, .....ok ok I admit, it likes to lie down.

It is one of my favourite roads. A bit of straight section just out of Palmerston, then windy with plenty of hill work as far as Kyeburn. Fairly straight again to Ranfurly.

May be a slight change of plan for me.
My off sider has just destroyed his clutch on the way home from work today, He's now looking at flying into Dunedin saturday morning and buying a new bike so my hours of travel may have moved forward an hour to 4am so i can meet him in Dunedin. I'll let you know if i wont be in Rakaia for a hook up.
Just in case it all turns to custard for him, Is Rakaia the better place to meet or is there a better spot elsewhere?, bearing in mind in traveling from the coast.

Latest weather forecast still shows mild temperatures on Saturday, with possibly a light frost in the morning. There is a chance of rain overnight saturday-sunday, but it will pass through quickly and Sunday should be clearing weather.

The guys from Ashvagas ( Honda Country crew, Jeff Marshall M/C crew & associates) probably 30 odd bikes all up are leaving at 9.30am (confirmed).
If leaving Rolly BP at 7am then you'll be well ahead of them  but guaranteed they most likely roar past at some stage if ted, ralph & bp have anything to do with it, watch for a RC45,K5 20th ann Gxer, silver/blue busa, GSX14, GS12 etc

Paturoa called me from Taihape at around 1pm today. They were behind schedule (plenty of time for their fairy though) and were heading straight through to Welly from that point.
Welly was very mild today, should have been a smooth sailing. No  with plenty of :drinknsin on the way over??

Really :buggerd: They're not ghey are they? If they didn't shag around with the fairies then making the ferry in time really wouldn't be a problem.

Nice and warm here, +9.5 outside at the moment.
I'm pleased that the weather is looking fine for the weekend, but also a bit disapointed in a way, I was kinda looking forward to riding through a scenic MacKenzie/Haka Pass in the snow. Would've been cold, but good to see.

Good morning and good day, all packed and ready to go this morning around 10ish. I have to spend an hour at work this morning which is a pain, but has to be done.
By the looks of this forum and the odd few bikes on the road, it is likey there will be a couple of tents at the monkey over the weekend.
Hope the roads are good and everyone makes it in one piece.:nono:
Enjoy yourselves!!:scooter:

Actually saw the 1st bikes heading south on Weds & Thurs, but today since 8ish there's been a reasonably steady flow of bikes burbling past Chertsey heading south so there should be a good attendance  tomorrow will be busy for sure.

This is probably the most interesting Queens birthday week end I can remember.
I really enjoy all the bikes around over this W/E but watching all the planning and progress on KB has made this one the best yet and it's only just starting!
Temp was still only -5 C this morning but hoar frost is tumbling down over the hills from the direction of Twizel.(across Lake Benmore)
Could be cold crossing Black Forrest road in the mornings.
You are doing well so far TIE, you are the flag bearer after all!:blip:
I rode down to Oamaru with IDB yesterday Jantar and he thought it was colder on your side of the Lindis! Cheers John.

Well it feels bloody cold here today. It did get to -5 overnight, but had warmed to -2 by 8:00 am. Its just above freezing outside at the moment, but the low cloud isn't letting the sun through, so it feels colder.

Latest weather update. Still looking like mild temperastures on Saturday, but a possible overcast sky could see temperature staying in single figures. It still looks like a light rain could come through during the night, but should clear mid morning. A cold front with snow on the tops will come through late sunday, so North Islanders should head as far up the island as possible on Sunday. Snow could hit the desert road late monday.

Well, CB and I got to Blenhiem OK, just early enough to miss the truck smash.
Had a quiet night in Amberley, had tea with Huntaway, very enjoyable..
Saw a few bikes heading south including a couple who waved like loonies - I guess they recognised the F100 from somewhere???
Mild night here - no rain and about 12 degrees.
Used about $190 worth of fuel so far.

Went to Brass monkey today for a day ride, met a lot of KBr's on the way and over there.
Mrs O/rider and I were very impressed, lots of nice people on here.
The weather was very nice and apart from cow shit everywhere the roads were in great condition.
Seemed to be quite a big crowd and very pleasant mood this year but forecast may just bring drama over the last couple of days!
I took some pics but always seem to have the camera out when people of interest to KB have moved on but there are some signs of them in some of the pics.
I will try to post some starting the day from home and leaving the rally to come home.
We went via Dansey Pass and came home via Lindis Pass, great day out. Cheers John.

We left home at 09:30 got back at 18:45, had a really good day out, feel great. Hope pics are of some interest to some of you.
Note the big yellow flag on the fence, complements of Spankme and T.I.E! :blip: Cheers John.
PS: Pic one below is FT500 on his self promised pre 50 Rally. The dude in the "pink" tent is my son in law and the reluctant model in the pics is Mrs O/rider.
