I currently own a 91 zzr1100 but having serious problems with 2nd gear , its going to cost around $3000 to fix , i`m now looking at a 94 zzr do these bikes suffer the same problem , and are there other quirks one should look out for? Love my current bike , and it will be sadly missed.

I had a '94 for a bit... Never had any problems with it... fast, comfy, bit heavy, but went round corners pretty well for a bike its size. Had 80k on it when sold, still going strong for current owner... $3000 ??? Yikes, The D model ZZRs are bullet proof, they learned from the C models and fixed everything... The ZZR was pretty much unchanged apart from colours until the ZZR1200 arrived. Still a great bike for the money.

Sedge.

HOW MANY K'S YOU GOT ON IT CAUSE THE C HAD THE BEST GEARBOX OF ALL OF THEM , THAT MOTOR IS JUST A 1984 GPZ900 MOTOR THAT THEN GOT GIVEN A CAPACCITY BOOST FOR THE 1000RX AS WELL AS AN EXTRA CLUTCH SPRING , THEN IT WAS TURNED INTO THE ZX10 BY LOOSING THE ROCKERS AND USING SHIM AND BUCKETS AND CVKD CARBS (SEMI DOWN DRAFT) THEN IT WAS TURNED INTO THE ZZR1100 MOTOR WITH JUST A 100CC CAPACITY CHANGE , AN I BELIEVE FOR THE D MODEL THEY MADE THEY LIGHTENED THE GEARBOX . HOW THE HELL DID YOU FUCK THAT GEARBOX , GET A SECOND OPININON

the bike currently has 48k on the clock, and as for rooting the gearbox , it`s been on ongoing problem, at first they said it was me not getting it into gear properly(what a load of shit)then they said it was a detent spring (which they changed) then it started all over again and would disengage after been selected and graunch and disengage completely , something to do with ball bearings in the tumbler not picking up properly(something you don`t want to happen whilst mid corner. But I love the power of the old girl , so hopefully the D3 has a better box.Cheers for the imput Iv`e been getting.

My C1 has a somewhat clunky gearbox and when I am lazy changing between 4th and 5th it can false neutral but apart from that it’s all good. Just run in at 98,000ks.
Before I purchased the bike I went into the local Kawasaki Shop (Shaw’s) and asked the mechanic if they had any vices and the 2nd gear thing was the only thing mentioned he said while test riding it gave it arseholes in second and also make it labour with low revs if it doesn’t slip or crunch its all good!! Also I think he said most where recalled and this problem was fixed. Give them a call not sure of the dudes name but 09 438 1183 or shaw.motorcycles@xtra.co.nz

Seems a bit pricey but you may be able to crunch them 70,000ks

I sometimes get a false neutral between 5th & 6th on my D1. It really pisses me off, but is helpful for giving me a wake-up call when I slip into lazybastard mode on longer trips. I heard the C model had a bearing problem on no.2 rod, not heard this gearbox problem before. Having said that, there was I think a D model in at TSS M/C here in Da Hutt a few months back and the guy said the gearbox was rooted and the owner couldn't afford repairs. I just assumed it had been caned/not oiled.

Buckets N Bits in Welly here has a few ZZR wrecks, The owner is a fan, although he gives nothing away for nothing if you know what I mean.
