It was beautiful in Palmy yesterday - blue skys and sun shining. Perfect day for a ride? Yep, it was shaping up that way, until it all went down the crapper.

I thought I'd go for a blat over the Feilding-Vinegar hill road. I get over the straight bits and to the first twisty incline only to find a bloody stock truck has dumped effluent ALL over the flamin' road!!! Whinge number one.

After I still-enjoyed a slower ride to Vinegar Hill, I was heading back to Palmy staring at blue sky. I took the shortcut from SH1 through to feilding and the sky in front started to grey a little. First some misty kind of stuff, then all of a sudden it started pelting down hail. My visibilty was soon reduced to 4-5m. I pulled over but the pelting hail hurt more when I was stopped so I pressed on, albeit at 30-40 odd kays. I finally got sight of blue sky about 3mins later and within 30 secs I was back on bone dry road staring at blue sky. Whinge number two - our crazy weather!!!

Just thought I'd share my experience.

PS. I saw a guy on a CBR600F on SH1 riding in the hard left of the lane. He was riding on the LH white line at times. Is this stupid or what!!

Yeah, palmy weather sux between the months of april and january.

Still, there is lots of nice roads down there. I agree, vinegar hill rocks, my preffered direction if sh1 to the "chelty".

Other good roads I remember, kimbolton to apiti, topgrass road out of woodville, saddle road from ashhurt (open yet?) and the pohonigina valley (sp?).

We should start a "Vinegar Hill rocks" society! Just like we should start a "Save the Kaitokes" society (probably a bit late for that last one, but).

At least all the rain would have washed off the cow shit.

Went to the top of the hill yesterday morning (Sat). There's so much mud and shit over Kaitoke, it's a pain in the ass. The weather wasn't brilliant, so came home with the last few kms in pissing down rain.

I was supposed to collect my new bike yesterday, but turns out Australia had sent the wrong model. (I tried to put a "doh" smilie in here but it wouldn't work for some reason!) Ah well, at least I do have one Ducati.

So I did some retail therapy at the bike shop - some new Dainese Ducati boots (don't need them but got a good deal - what's a girl to do?), some duct tape, and a couple of other things.

Sorry for hijacking this thread Phil!

Yeah, I dunno. I wasn't that impressed, even considering the crap i ran into. To be honest I know much better roads in this part of the NI, such as Eastern Tararua (allright, not real close but the general north-southern NI).Alot of these roads are better and unbelievably quiet (I did a 160-odd kay ride recently and saw a grand total of four cars - no joke). Eastern Tararua is a fair bit of a detour for most travels around the NI, but its worth going to.

On another note, I went for a blat through the Manawatu Gorge today after it re-opened recently. Man you wanna see the size of where some of those slips came down. Incredible!!

I've heard whispers about this region but never explored it. Had to dig out a map to find Vinegar Hill. So tells us more about the best roads and how they compare to, say, Rimutaka hill and Wairarapa. Sounds worth a weekend away.

Will try to remember to chuck a map in my tank bag so next time we see you on the hill we can show you some of the roads.

I would compare them some of the good roads around the Waiarapa, except they are longer! A good place to start is Route 52 from Masterton. From there it heads NE behind the Puketoi Range - this is a spectacular route. You have many options from here. You can go up to Pongaroa and then across to Pahiatua, or keep going up a bit further and then turn off to Weber and on to Dannevirke, or (if you have the range) continue right up to Waipakarau (there is a few ks of gravel if you do this leg).

Thanks Phil. I've done the Masterton-Weber area and you're right it is great. It's the West side of the Tararua's I've never explored above Cheltenham-Fielding-Vinegar Hill? Linda will no doubt be able to give me the run down.

If you are happy on tighter roads too try Pohangina valley and up to Apiti which is to the right on the map of the Cheltenham and basically straight up from Ashhurst, turn right just past the Waterford Cafe and Bar. There's a bit of moss on the road in the winter. You can then return via Kimbolton to Feilding. There are also some good roads, tight in places, to the left on the map from Hunterville through to Fordell.
