Who else has the game? And is anyone interested in having a weekly matchup with fellow KB'ers...
I was thinking two tracks per night, at around 10-15 Laps per piece.
For those interested the game sells for around $10 a copy in shops, or if you are in Auckland i might be able to lend you mine.
What do you think?
Please PM me if you are interested - make sure you tell me you email so i can send out a set of rules and times so that you all know what is going on and how it is going to work

Sounds like a fun idea... Being completely unfamiliar with games prior to motoGP4 (just picked one up from K mart for 25.90 bloody good value if you ask me) for PS2... I wondering if motoGP2 is for PC or PS2???
Either way, if it really is only $10 (I'm gussing you would probably need the original to play on the internet) I would be interested.

Sweetas, well its a 2003 release, there has since been MotoGP3 - Ultimate Racing Technology, and now they are working on motoGP2006.
I have updates to bring the game into line with last years MotoGP Championship, but unless you've got the basic game sorted there isnt really any reason to upgrade just yet.
My recommendation is to complete as much of the training as possible, do as many challenges as possible, and play around with the bike settings. One way to work out the settings is to set everything to highest and then turn one to minimum and see how the handling changes, do this for all variables then do the opposite (set all to min, one to max) and see how it changes. OR you could search for some setups in gaming forums.
p.s, i am up to 42 Points for my bike, which is around 3/4 of what you can get i think... doesnt take long if you try though.

Sweetas, well it looks like there is some interest there for sure.
One thing i will mention with regards to dialup etc, it only affects how well you see the other riders moving, but it wont stop your times from going through properly. As long as your computer sees the host and vice versa it works out all good.
There are some guys working on a restricter to keep things even when playing online, but i might end up making it a one bike type shootout or something to that effect. Will have to look into it further before doing things like that though.
First question for you all is which night would be best. I was kind of thinking wednesday night's at around 7.30pm.
If we do full races, which is between 1:30-2:20 per lap we are looking at up to 45mins per race - therefore the second question is how many laps would you do before it became too much? I was thinking 15 lap races, two tracks per night.

29th April 2006, 19:50
alright a few tips for the newbs....
the RCV211 is shite in the game - so avoid it unless you really want to race it.
Brakes are important, just like in real life!
I suggest trying the following bike setup:
Tyres: Medium/Hard (soft if raining)
Gear Ratio: Low (normal for a track with long straights)
Front Suspension: 9/10
Rear Suspension: 10/10
Wheelbase: 1440 (then try 1420, then 1400 as you get used to it)
The technique to work this good is lots of acceleration and lots of braking. So you have to learn your bikes braking points for different types of corners otherwise you will end up in the grass/sand.
Also when allocating points on your bike make sure that braking is near the same as acceleration (within a point or two) otherwise you wont stop fast enough, also keep the cornering points up too but they dont need to be as high as the other three.
This setup will cause you to wheelspin on the line, so the trick is to to hold the revs at full, and when the lights change just tap the back brake to stop the rear from spinning up - takes a bit of time to get right.

not this week, didnt think you were all THAT eager. Gonna give it a week or two for people to get the game, get a bit of practice etc etc.
I mean i'm atleast a week or two ahead of most people. I highly recommend doing as much of the training as possible, as well as completeing your first season.
The rules are pretty simple at the moment:
- Must use your own bike (e.g. cant use unlocked bikes)
- Practice will be 5 laps of track to be raced, the tracks will be announced the night before (i'll try and keep this in key with the real MotoGP)
-Points scoring will be as per the game (will have to verify this so that you still get points for being at the back)
- I will verify the setup of the racing when we are all in the game (via the person hosting it as i cant :pinch: )
- If you get disconnected during game play you will be relegated one place and scored accordingly (this may change)
Anyone have any other ideas for rules to keep it fair?
For those that asked, only MotoGP2 will work online, anyother version and you will not see us online, also please run it standard without any patches or upgrades.
Please PM me if you are interested - make sure you tell me you email so i can send out a set of rules and times so that you all know what is going on and how it is going to work

end = skip song - dont forget that one!
yeap im getting the hang of it slowly, completed up to "hold the line" of the training.
I had to skip the burnout one as after a few tries i just couldnt figure out how the hell i was supposed to complete it...... can pull a burnout just fine, can sorta sustain one by tapping the front brake key but as soon as i cross the line it says i did it wrong?
what am i missing here? or do i need a touch sensitive controller?
Also i'd be keen to try a few testing runs to get the network side of things working, i could host a game after some router fiddling but wont be able to have many outsiders join (due to lack of upload, 3.5/128k adsl with orcon).

The burnout one shouldn't be too hard, iirc you just start the burnout with the front brake and throttle before the line, then tap the front brake so you keep moving forwards.
The slalom one after that is where I've given up :p

to date i havent heard of anyone that has beaten the slalom... i almost did but i only did 2/3 of it then rushed to the finish - hit zero just as i met the line so i figured i needed to be quicker at the start but i cant be bothered. One thing to remember is to stay on your first season in career as that is where you create your rider/bike combo - after season one you only earn championship points not rider credits, effectively your bike at the end of season one is your bike for the rest of the game unless you start over.
to date i havent heard of anyone that has beaten the slalom...
That's good to know, maybe I'm not so hopeless then.
I think I'll just concentrate on racing rather than doing the training tests.
Any chance of naming the track we'll be using now so we all get a chance to learn it?
I think I'm going to need all the help I can get to stay on the track...

RACING STARTS IN TWO WEEKS
Tuesday 23rd of May
There will be a practice run on this coming tuesday to clear up any issues before the start date.
We will be playing over the gamespy network - those with copies dont worry because i know it works. I need someone fairly senior (that everone knows) that has a decent internet connection to host it via GameSpy. I know this means instally extra stuff but its the easiest way to make sure the non-geek types can join in.

i can host it tho as i have a static IP
im for doing a testing run this week so that i can monitor what sorta bandwidth the game will use and make a decision on what is needed to host, we may have to end up doing it in 2 runs or something.....
R6_kid
10th May 2006, 18:56
Umm, im pretty sure if you host it via gamespy network it is hosted somewhere on their servers... you just run it.
Once you have installed GameSpy it is pretty straight forward.
um nope thats an impossibility, it would simply cost them too much to make it worth while, it is merely a meeting point for hosting games. edit: oh yea and the ping would be terrible (and not due to our crap internet)
there are 2 different ways games communicate these days
1) Centrelised server: one comp is the host/server of the game, all clients send their info to the server and the server sends everyones info to the clients (games like counter-strike, wow etc use this)
2) client to client (like p2p) all clients send their info to all other clients in the game (commonly used in rts games such as starcraft, warcraft, aoe/aom and c&c.
i can see motogp being either of these.... therefor it needs testing. (i reckon its gonna be #1 though)
i dont mean to brag or anything but ive been working with comps since before i was 5, ive set up a cyber cafe, ive ran various game servers, and i currently work as a laptop tech servicing laptops in the biggest computer company in nz. :bleh:

Please make sure you have GameSpy installed and working so you can test it out on this date. Why do we need gamespy?
Can't someone just create a game and people connect to it?
i think its easier to start one up through gamespy.

Basically you go Multiplayer game - IPC network, it will come up with a box asking you to enter an IP adress which will be in the form of XXX.XX.XXX.XX or something similar where the X's are numbers. I will get details of the adress we will be using and post it in the chat room.

alright a few tips for the newbs....
the RCV211 is shite in the game - so avoid it unless you really want to race it.
This setup will cause you to wheelspin on the line, so the trick is to to hold the revs at full, and when the lights change just tap the back brake to stop the rear from spinning up - takes a bit of time to get right.I was keen but now I'm not sure, thats a lot of work just setting up the bike and the last time I played a bike game I sucked, and it wasn't even a very good game (MR3) Moto Racer 3 bugger I'll be in.

If anyone has MotoGP3 on PC, I have it, and would be interested in a race or two..

was supposed to be contacted by an ISP regarding hosting the events for us, however never heard a word. Turns out unless you are an IT guru that MotoGP2 doesnt want you to play over the net so as said it never really took off, although there is a lot of interest in it which was good.

He reckons he's emailed you Gareth. I'll see what's up. It's not really that you need to be an IT guru. You can thank Telecom up the lack of upload bandwidth.

Does no-one have a 512kb upload? Surely that would run the game nicely.

Someone may well have bought a 512kb upload product - I'd like to see them actually get that amount of bandwidth consistently. Remember, Telecom only have to point their gnarled finmger at a burst of traffic that hits 512kb for 1 sec to say that the link is in spec.
