MotoGP 2004 - Round 2 - Jerez
125 Race
May 2nd, 2004 - By, Trevor Hedge

Australia's Casey Stoner had been quick all weekend at Jerez. Third quickest in the dry on Friday and fourth quickest in the wet on Saturday. But nobody could have predicted how the Kurri Kurri teenager would come out of the blocks in today's dreadful conditions at the exciting Spanish circuit.
Stoner simply stormed away in the opening laps to build a lead of over six seconds with only three laps down. Barbera closed that gap down to a little over four seconds a couple of laps later, but Stoner responded and by half race distance had stretched his lead out to a full ten seconds.

Then with only three laps to run Casey Stoner dropped it while trying to negotiate backmarkers. He desperately tried to get his machine going again and rejoined the race in seventh position as they continued to splash their way around Jerez. Inheriting the lead was Simoncelli.

Barbera was in second place after going past Jenkner but he then ran off the track and lost that position. Simoncelli took the win from Jenkner while Barbera managed third. Stoner worked his way back up to fifth place in that last couple of laps after recovering from his fall

If Casey had won he would have become the first Australian since Tom Phillis in 1961 to score three consecutive podiums in the 125cc class.

Incredibly the 125 class has not seen a back to back race winner since 2002 when Arnaud Vincent took wins at Donington and then Sachsenring.
