View Full Version : Not Speeding...Driving...CRASHING

I just drove from Porirua to Paraparaumu in my dear old mothers car (Well actually i bounced my way home (She drives a Citroen Xantia (Turbo Diesel) with adjustable hydraulic suspension - dont ask me why)) and being a driver that drives around 9-10k over the speed limit and all legal etc etc, I found myself regularly heading over the allowable speed limit cause i wasnt used to her car. This made me slightly nervous because I, being a poor uni student, cannot afford to 'donate' any of my hard earned **cough cough**... i mean hard loaned money back to the government.
***I am quite proud of the use of brackets in the first sentence***
What i found myself doing was this:
Looking at (in sequence)... Speedo - road - mirrors - speedo - road - speedo - mirrors - speedo - speedo - road (Swerve to avoid oncoming traffic) - speedo - speedo - speedo - Car in front of me that had slowed and that i was about to hit... And so on.
I reckon that because of how anal all the police officers have become and how many revenue collecting devices there are out there placed strategically so that when you hit the bottom of the hill/passing lane at 11-12ks over the speed limit they hear their registers go... It has made me concentrate more on not going that 11-12k over the speed limit and not on my driving.
I know that some of you would say that I should have good control over my speed and should be able to tell when i am at the speed limit or not, and that a simple glance at the speedo and then up should suffice... but this was a CAR that i was unfamiliar with, and not the bike that i ride every day to uni.
Dont get me wrong... I think that it is great that the police have lowered the general speed in the country but i think that they should show some common sense and not fine every person they catch going 11-12k over the limit while passing.
Oh and to top it all off i may have been caught by a camera as i was overtaking someone...
Is it just me or is anal policeing (sp?) making a road where everyone is so concerned with speed that they dont worry about driving and rather would stay at the 'safe' speeds? Personally i think that people driving cages should concentrate on not knocking me off my bike.
RANT OVER>>>
As an aside, driving through all the mess that is McKays crossing i saw a bike coming the other way with its headlight rigged so that it flickered about once a second... It was really noticeable and made it so that i was very aware of where and what he was. I may try and rig a similar system to my bike >> How do i do that?

Drive at 105 then you have more leeway!
I know what you mean about the turbo diesel. I was driving my olds turbo diesel ages ago when picking the old man up from the airport, and the speed climbs without you noticing. My conclusion was that the engine noise or exhaust note doesn't change eff all esp compared to the bike (where esp wind noise increases). Every time I looked at the speedo it was reading 115, so I drop back to 100, then find the damn thing climbing again. Crazy:yes:

In Europe and Britain vehicle cruising speeds are higher and cars are made to opperate in those zones, you find most Euro cars are ''happy'' at 80mph.How many have been passed by a Transit van? Drive one and you wonder how the hell they could go that fast, but when you get on the open road they just settle down at 120kph real sweet....that puts them in the slow lane over there.

personally, i think that you saying how hard it is for you to stay within the posted limit is ridiculous, and shows how poor a driver you are. most late model 1600-2000cc cars are capable of twice the speed limit - as the open road limit is therefore 1/2 their capable top speed, are they correspondingly difficult to drive AT the speed limit? i don't think so.
and you didn't see a camera? your choice to overtake, bad luck. actually, luck doesn't come into it. just poor decision making.
funny, but when i choose to, i don't seem to have any problem keeping my scooter at or near to whatever speed limit i happen to be in at the time. maybe it's just me.

It's not that hard to drive at a legal speed? There are plenty of people that do it. If you were that concerned about 'speeding' then why didn't drive at 95-100? There are some pretty anal police out but for the most part if you're being employed to enforce some gummint rules then it would stand to reason that to keep your job you'd do exactly that?
It's not the fact that the road speed limits are wrong or should be different for different vehicles (which they are) the fact is that you got caught - suck it up.

Sorry thats not true - if youre used to riding a bike and you jump in a car or on an unfamiliar bike it is easy to speed without realising how fast your'e going. Especially if its a lot more powerfull than the vehicle your used to traveling in. Drive a Van round the country for a week then jump back on your bike or normal car. Keeping a scooter at the speed limits not hard - breaking the speed limit on a scooter is.
Ditto on Motus comments - French cars are really not set up for cruising at 100Km/H. Most people on the French Autoroutes sit at 80-90 MPH, if you drive any slower you get flashed or tailgated by trucks.

I agree with the original post. :wait:
I have noticed an increasing amount of drivers on the road who appear to be concentrating so much on what speed they are doing that they miss the obvious dangers around them. Motorcyclists are going to have to be more on guard than ever before.
It's a pain following people in a 50kmh semi built up area, when they are working so hard not to go over 50kmh. Many are now sitting on 40 and 45kmh and the same goes for the open road where they are doing 90-95kmh in bright sunny, dry conditions on long straights.
It's getting ridiculous. I believe more people are going to have accidents as they are spending more time looking at their speedos than looking at the road. :(
Sure, there are nutters out there but there's more people running around raping, pillaging and commiting crime that need sorting out, more so than motorists paranoid about speeding who get caught at 111kmh because they decided to overtake some old granny pootling along at way under the speed limit. Phew.

... French Autoroutes sit at 80-90 MPH, ...
They are French, therefore they do 130 Kilometres per hour!
All that aside, cars do seem to sit more easily in top gear in the rev range they're tuned for, and I would agree with the above observations from Euros I've driven, they seem to be happier to cruise at higher speeds than Jappers, and have a tendency to let you creep until you get used to them (note 'let you creep - the car doesn't creep on its own).
You should try a CVT. You get so used to judging your speed changes by ear, the CVT motor pitch doesn't change when you're cruising and you can find yourself all over the place!

Its all well and good to blame my driving... I am not a self confessed car driving genious like so many of you people out there seem to be and I know that motorcyclists have a better feel for roads and are much more aware of whats going on, thats why most of us are still using this forum and are not dead..
But i consider myself to be a fairly adequate driver... And much better than some. All i am saying is that if i find this then what would other people find? For you guys who jump into different cars on a regular basis thats awesome that you can judge speed better than I. I feel really happy for you. Ecstatic even. :zzzz:
This actually brings to light another point... All male (Sorry to be sexist) drivers that i know consider themselves to be an excellent driver. Failing that all of them think that they are at least above average. Even some of those guys on britains worst drivers consider themselves to be not that bad.
My Point: If all males think that they are above average, and at least half are below average, then there is a gap in skill compared to percieved skill for at least half of males.
I am a male driver... I would consider myself to be safe on the road, but i would probably say that in terms of actual driving skill and vehicle control, i am below average. My saving grace is the fact that i ride bikes and so i am aware of almost everything that is around me.
Does anyone have any answers to my last question??? About the headlight flickering device?

The corollary to constant speedo checking is the halfwits who decide it's all a bit risky to stay at 100 km/h, so they do 85. (just to be safe)
Still, I ride a bike = no traffic hold ups.

They are all such fabulous drivers NOTHING will ever happen to them, coz they are bullet proof and can do what they like.

Well thats great that someone out there is realistic about their driving. Also age does count for something, and nothing makes a better driver than hours on the road but I have met a sh*tload of 'mature' drivers that don't have any clue what they're doing.
For instance my boss thinks that he is a great driver... Yet when im with him he:

- Drinks coffee and eats lunch while driving with his knees at highway speeds.
- Talks on his phone/txts all the time while driving.
- Moans about other drivers on the road

I drive at around 95K everywhere where there's a hundy limit. So that gives me shit loads of margin for error before I need to be concerned about drawing attention to myself.
So use your common sense mate - slow down if you're not able to maintain a constant speed in a vehicle you're unfamilier with. Fk everyone else behind you. Why should you risk breaking the law and incurring a fine for some muppet you don't even know?
And I'm with the anti-speed ticket whiners - get a grip ya jessies. A throttle/accelerator works both ways. If you get caught speeding tough shite. But feel free to post about it here anyway - because I for one love to gloat, being as I've yet to incurr any demerts. But that's because I always to runners form the cops, on one wheel, while smoking P, on my way from conducting armed robberies.
Ho - hum. Who else can I abuse? I'm in one of those moods.

Saw a cage yesterday morning. Noticed he was wandering just a little in his lane, but nothing to speak of. 'twas a dual lane road, but not a motorway. Came up beside him and glanced in the window, I had to ride alongside him for a bit.
He had a map propped up on the steering wheel, and each sideroad he went past, he'd check it on the map. Glance at road sign, look at map, finger on map, glance back up at road, correct course if necessary.
Wondered what if anything he could be charged with if a cop had seen him. Not really dangerous, not even careless, not reckless. Not speeding. But still probably not a Good Thing.
No rant, I felt comfortable being beside him, he seemed pretty competant. Just made me wonder.

Careless Use... pure and simple...
Pull over to read the map and get bearings and directions. Not watching the road while driving coz you're reading a map is "Careless" (ie: doesn't "care" enough about what is happening ahead...)
But as he was doing well enough, a "word or two" was probably more likely...

We complain about the system when we get tickets even though we know how it works
You complain about the system when people get let off even though you know how it works

Hm. As opposed to not watching the road while driving coz you're reading the speedometer ? Not necessarily disagreeing, just interested. He was only glancing down for a moment each time , no longer than it would take to check the speedo. And probably a better line of sight to the map on the steering wheel than to the speedo in the instrument panel (ever noticed where the speedo is on old Jags BTW)

Do you really believe this?
Unless I'm the exception that proves the rule, I've never hurt anyone on the road, or myself, and I pay minimal speed tax. Yet I always exceed the limit, sometimes not enough for a ticket though. And rarely, if ever, at a speed classed as "speed dangerous".
But I'm also a crap driver/rider.

Quite coincidentally I was having a chat with a guy today about how tiring it is to travel long distances these days. He'd found that having a car with cruise control was much better for doing distance in, because he found it took away the need for him to pay attention to the speed as well as the road, etc and meant he was not as tired. Now before you dumb shits misinterpret this, we're talking about roads and conditions that are conducive to sustained 100k+ action. And he's Aussie-based too, so wasn't just limiting this to NZ.
If you want to talk about males rating their driving ability, I used to be an absolute legend. I kid you not. I'd raced, rallied (legally) and did enough stupid shit in cars to know exactly how a car behaved, and how to control it. My reflexes were razor sharp, my skills were well and truly honed. On the odd occasion that I was driving sensibly on a public road, I was able to avoid the proverbial kid chasing soccer ball because of those quick reflexes and instinctive abilities.
BUT, and here's the BIG but, I was seldom driving sensibly around town. So if a kid stepped out, I was usually travelling at a speed that cancelled out the positives that my extra ability gave me over a dead average driver. Or I'd left such a small margin for error than when shit did happen, well it turned to shit alright.
Nowadays, I can't remember how long it's been since I've had a car on or even near the limit. These days I rely on ABS brakes and I'm bloody glad my slow CVT station wagon has a good crash rating, side intrusion beams and multiple airbags. Cos I'm pretty sure my reflexes now would be so damn dull, and so damn average, that one day I'm gonna need those features.
Personally, I'd rather not have to drive in a country that requires me to be so vigilant at watching the speedo, but thems the breaks.

Personally, I'd rather not have to drive in a country that requires me to be so vigilant at watching the speedo, but thems the breaks.
boring yawn yawn go ride your bike

Semantics aside and irrespective of which system, what you've said is
We complain about the system when we get tickets even though we know how it works
You complain about the system when people get let off even though you know how it works
People in number 1 are whingers
People in number 2 are right
Hmmmmmmm.
My alzheimers/blenhiemers is kicking in... just where have I complained about the system? I am never right, my wife tells me all the time...so I am not a number 2... te hee... number 2...:blip: number 1's are whingers.:nya:
It is what we work with, they get out early, we catch em... again... works fine for me!

i was commuting return to dorkland a little while ago, and specifically bought a large car with cruise control, as the 2.0l telstar was getting thrashed - up to 160 every day, as i had my foot on the gas. in the diamante i still went quick (usually around 1hr20 for 138km), but it was a constant speed, rather than up and down like the switch throttled telstar.
i use cruise all the time, otherwise i tend to travel at near-busa speeds. oops.

BUT, i drove to auckland to today, towing a big trailer, most of the time at 110k, saw 1 cop on the expressway with someone stopped, and another at the autobahn. how the fuck does anyone get caught?
