hey guys
i just filled up my new bike for the first time and noticed theres some wierd bag thing in the tank. at first i thought it was a bladder which the fuel is supposed to go in, and i figured it was broken or something.. but it appears to be made of fabric (or some material).

ive never heard of anything like this before (but im by no means an expert)
is it some filter which is supposed to be at the bottom of the tank and come loose or do you think that the last owner just lost one of his old rags in there?!

the bike is a 92 RGV 250

can anyone help?
sorry for being such a Newbie- its probably nothing

Hi Joshua, il have a go mate :Pokey: two things, either yes it is infact an old bag/rag that as inadvertantly ended up in the tank. Or, my other guess is it might be some sort of internal coating/treatment on the inside of the tank thats come loose or peeling?

Did you get it from a dealer? if so take it back! I wouldnt be keen on floaties (or sinkies for that matter) getting into the fueling system, that might get messy!

cheers intense,

na, i didnt buy it from a dealer.. the guy i bought it from was a top bloke though, perhaps ill give him a call.

wouldnt most internal treatments be spray on rather than stick-on material-like jobbies? i just would have thought that petrol would dissolve whatever it is that sticks the material to the inside of the tank... then again, maybe thats what happened!

ill get in there with some chopsticks some time this morning and see if i can get it out to see what it is...

anyone got any other ideas?

yep...fish it out for a look-see and take it from there - i doubt it should be there

google for a manual, and see if it mentions anything similar

Havent you seen Easy Rider? Its full of money from a drug deal!!

Could be drugs from a drug deal!

There is a filter on the fuel tap, but it is pretty small, like little finger small.

Possibly some clown may have tried some 'snake oil' octane booster precious metal bag thing that claimed to do all sorts of things & did nothing. Never seen one or heard of anyone gullible enough to buy one, read about in an ol UK mag.

Use a decent 2 stroke oil & is a good idea to check the powervalves in those RGVs, they have a habit of fretting the centre rivet that holds the sliding valves together & they drop into the cylinder. Not a big deal to do, but they should be taken out & checked every so often to avoid problems.

How big,

My old GS has a light coloured plastic filter that fits over the top of the petcok inside of the tank. It not hat big about 5 cm long by 2 x 1.

I've often wondered how it stays there as its just a push fit and with all of the petrol sloshing around.

nah, its not that small.. i havent got it out yet, but id estimate around maybe 30cm square. its all floaty at the top (kinda like wat would happen if u put a pillowcase in a bath...) so cant see for sure.
ill fish it out when i get home

cheers for all yr help

Well if it was a petrol resistant open cell foam, -like real open cell & unlike you describe-I'd say it was the stuff you chuck in race bikes to reduce fuel surge (& hence sudden weight transfer) while braking. RGVs are likely candidated for production racing of course. Certainly not reqd on the road & just takes up space.

anyone know why someone would do that?

Holy Crap that thing is massive.

Go find the previous owner and slap him in the face with it. :eyepoke:

So that's where I left my beach towel! I've been looking for that everywhere...

. . . why someone would do that?

What white trousers & a yelow T shirt while working on a bike? Heck I dunno, try some soul searching.

The material looks like fibreglass weave or something, but maybe just a bodgy fuel surge attempt. But yuk!
[edit] Bling for cool screen name bert.

So what will you find in the oil tank & airbox? Perhaps a nice Duvet, maybe a little 2 seater, matching couch & lazyboy arrangement?:bye:

Perhaps the clothes were in the tank too...

maybe there's a small martian living in the airbox and the petrol tank was his pool and that's his towel?

and when you bought the bike he had to move to wellington and be picked up by his spaceship off the motorway and THAT'S why the cops were blocking all the traffic.....

or. dry it out, is there an image of jesus on it?

i would suggest flushing your tank,

eg take tank off, flush all old petrol/grit out, and then put back back on refull and your away

God knows if any of those fibres are floating around in the tank, and might get in to your system

What sort of fabric is it?

I'm imagining you pulling it out of the tank, making me think of a clown pulling an endless string of coloured scarves out of his hand. Perhaps the previous owner was a clown in training. Did they have big feet? Red nose? Bucket of water that turned out just to be glitter?

EEwww. some dirty clod must have tried to hide the dirty sheet from his missus after having his side bint around. Prolly the least suspicious place to bung it mate. :(

I think it was put in when the bike was repainted. You should take of you fuel tank cap 1st then pull it out it will be a lot easier.
BTW i saw your bike at UOA Alfred Street today.Parked beside your bike this morning.

I think some one had drained the tank (maybe for stoarage) and shoved a towel in there to soak up that little bit of petrol left over and left it in there. You should of got a flashlight and checked the inside of the tank to check for rust anyways.
