View Full Version : Celebrity motorcyclists and "image"

Here's the thing:
Most high profile motorbike riders are pretty much rightly regarded by the general public as twats (John Banks, that guy Carlos wotsisname from auckland... rugby player whose use by date is well past) or insane fools (bad publicity recently about the so called 300kph "chase" in Central Otago).
Therefore Gareth Morgan should be applauded, not only for giving all that coin away, but also positively raising motorcyclists profile.
l cant decide which camp to place Ewan McGreor and Charlie Boorman: on the one hand they got a TV show on (nearly) primetime, but on the other Boorman cries all the time, and no one really believes they were roughing it with two film crews and a support truck.....
But, who the hell else is a high profile, positive reinforcement role model that Joe Lunchbox and Betty Housecoat can say, "Ooooh, he's/she's a great guy, and rides a motorbike, motorbikes can't be all bad"
I cant think of any offhand. (except maybe Arnie in T2)

Yup.
The same bike he wrecked his leg riding.
Some folx from work had him as a motivational speaker at a conference, and were completely blown away by him. Biker Gurrrrl (HD Sportster 883) chatted with him, and was very impressed. He's one cool guy.

The problem is lots of celebrities want to be seen out and about with all the bling bling and flash flash. Bikes offer anonymity (and sometimes animosity)!
There must be heaps of celebs that project a great image for the mc fraterniity! It's just joe bloggs perception of whom/what is good.

I once saw Will Smith on American Chopper. Never seen anyone look so awkward on two wheels - including my 5 year old - but I guess riding one of those Orange County "specials" wouldn't be the easiest task.
Depends on who you think are celebrities I suppose - I don't watch TV,read newspapers or magazines, what I get from the media is very select...I haven't got a clue who half the people mentioned here are ('cept for Big Dave, but he's,like...y'know,famous) I've got no problem with Ewan McGregor and Charlie...they showed dual sport bikes to the world, and if you think they moaned too much, then try it.The back up wasn't their idea,it just became necessary when they decided to film a ride thousands have done in obscurity.
Micheal Schumacher and Kimi Raikonen ride bikes - Kimi rides dirt and Schumacher often turns up at a GP on a bike....he's even ridden an adventure bike over here. What about Billy Connolly riding a trike around the world....or don't the elite riders here think a trike is a bike?

No. He was avoiding a Postman at the time!
"Boa is a top-gear machine, as sweet in that as most single-cylinders in middle. I chug lordlily past the guard-room and through the speed limit at no more than sixteen. Round the bend, past the farm, and the way straightens. Now for it. The engine's final development is fifty-two horsepower. A miracle that all this docile strength waits behind one tiny lever for the pleasure of my hand.
"Another bend: and I have the honour of one of England's straightest and fastest roads. The burble of my exhaust unwound like a long cord behind me. Soon my speed snapped it, and I
heard only the cry of the wind which my battering head split and fended aside. The cry rose with my speed to a shriek: while the air's coldness streamed like two jets of iced water into my dissolving eyes. I screwed them to slits, and focused my sight two hundred yards ahead of me on the empty mosaic of the tar's gravelled undulations."
"...Over the first pot-hole Boanerges screamed in surprise, its mud-guard bottoming with a yawp upon the tyre. Through the plunges of the next ten seconds I clung on, wedging my gloved hand in the throttle lever so that no bump should close it and spoil our speed...
"A skittish motor-bike with a touch of blood in it is better than all the riding animals on earth, because of its logical extension of our faculties, and the hint, the provocations, to excess conferred by its honeyed untiring smoothness. Because Boa loves me, he gives me five more miles of speed than a stranger would get from him."
