View Full Version : Keep Left Unless Passing

What is it about one of the most simple road rules that is so bloody hard to understand ?
Keep left unless passing.
It's so simple, so very very simple. Yet every morning and every evening I encounter somebody who feels that little bit of work involved in indicating left and pulling over is too hard.
It's as if they are in some sort of stupor, have no idea that there is a convoy of traffic up their ass getting fucked off at travelling at 93kp/h.
I've never seen a biker do it, usually because they are doing 120 odd already. I could also generalise and be either racist or sexist but I won't. I've seen everyone do it and it fucks me off to no end. Usually if I am behind I will flash them and point to the other lane, which sometimes wakes them up, but jesus christ, some people!

Farks me off too. As an example I have regularly noticed cars crawling along at 93k in the right hand lane all the way up SH2 through Lower Hutt. No cars in the left lane, they are going to turn off at silverstream to the right in only 19 more km, so best they get into that right hand lane nice and early.
Fucking Retards!!!!!
Well next time I will smile at you in my review mirror and that will make it right.
You're not alone on this pet hate.

This even annoys the BDOTGNZA. It was discussed at some length at the last annual general meeting.

"Other lane"? Then why not use said other lane to pass them? Sorted.

Its one of my pet peeves too and when I'm in my cage (big fat slow 4wd diesel) my missus often looks stressed when I start pulling left to let someone past.
However when travelling to work on the bik, I make a point of waving to cages when the make room for me to split.

.
My stronget of pet hates. I have every know and again used the left lane to overtake, hate doing it, but some of these useless pricks dont get out of the way when they see someone behind.
Nothing we can do about....just gotta accept it and work around it.
Got to watch the old passing in the left lane .... people who hang about in the 'fast' lane don't usually check or indicate very well when moving to the 'slow' lane.
Blame the gummint!
There is no fast or slow lanes probably due to the fact that some people might take offence to being labeled slow?
Most other countries have signs on motorways saying "keep left, pass right"

Ditto ditto to all. Had an encounter today going up the gorge. Middle of the day, no one around, I'm travelling a few clicks above recommended & a young guy in a BMW is puttering at 80k's in the RH lane. Slowed down to let him see me & move, he didnt...tosser. Chucked it down a cog & took off giving him the finger & peice of my mind on the way!!! Bloody annoying really.

Yeah man, on every single ride I go on I get tossers who hog the right lane when they aren't overtaking - quite happy in their own little world being a inconsiderate bastard! I hate having to overtake on the inside (is it illegal over here to undertake?) but even with some persuasive revving and flashing some people just don't get it.
Thats my rant anyway, had to get it off my chest! ahhhhh.

I belive the problem is driver education, Mainly the lack of it. KEEP ALIVE KEEP LEFT <-- some body pay me a top marketerring salary, I just saved them from the 20 mins work they do each week.
If there is more than one lane in the direction you are going in (ie a road with 4 or more lanes in total) it is quite legal (and IMHO perfectly practical and safe) to pass a vehicle in the right hand lane when you are in the lefthand lane. Each lane is considered as if it were its own "road". You keep to the left of your lane. Obviously, you must stay in your own lane when doing this.
It is also legal to pass another vehicle when you are in the left lane and the other vehicle is in a "passing" lane (assuming it is going the same direction as you are).

I came home just over an hour ago and followed the wellington free ambo in the right hand lane up SH1 I flashed once twice waited waited and then passed on the inside. The twat still didn't get the message.
A friend of mine in the UK suggested that you stop one of these f**kers take them out of the car and shoot them in the head then see how many want to stay in the outside lane!!!!!!!
The police should be concentrating on people who quite clearly can't drive to save their f**king lives rather than pissing people off that drive a few K's over the limit most of which are driving 10 times better than anyone else! ! ! ! !
Rant over
have a good one all

I don't think they are getting it Ixion... they are kiwi's and seriously believe they own the road they believe its healthy to flip the birdie and flash there lights while their blood pressure goes through the roof... its effortless to change lanes FFS
PS: slow drivers in the right hand lanes are a differant story altogeather then again all we need to do is change lane

Yep, can't stand it and it happens all the time. :(
Also I do not see why when somone enters a three lane, on your side, motorway, that they have to rush straight into the right lane like that's where they have an instant right to be. Trucks do it as well and then find they can't quite get over 80kmh. Here you are busy flat spotting your tyres, helping the tyre industry make more money and adding to global warming from all the burnt rubber.
I was in my cage driving home from work and a car gets on heading South at Manukau. There's no one in all three lanes except me doing about 110kmh in the right lane. Usually the motorways chocker at this time. This retro germ, decides he needs to be in the right lane instantly. Pulls straight across all three lanes, right in front of me, without looking and doing no more than 60kmh cos he just got on the motorway and didn't have his speed up yet. :gob:
I toss out the anchor, nearly rear end the prat, swing left, give him the birdy, cut him off a little to show him what a spaz he's being, so next time he won't do it again.
Next day I get a bollocking from the GM for abusing another motorist and for dangerous driving. Having a company car with personal plates, showing where you work aint a good idea. The germ rings up work the next day to complain and he's in the wrong, which I pointed out to the GM.
Man, I do get pissed off sometimes. :(

No, No, No, that is far too sanctimonious for this time of the morning, Lou.
I have to admit I used to get pissed off at the lane hogging, cutting in etc habits of other drivers until I suddenly realised that what they did had minimal effect on my progress thru traffic. I can easily (and safely) pass them on the bike and get on with enjoying the ride, so I now ignore all crap driving examples and just blow on by.
I must have finally matured...now theres a frightening thought.

Fair pisses me off too... It's the same morons that see me trying to merge from the central holding lane and won't move left... Stuck out there and they just won't shift out of the fast lane that they are driving at 90 kph in...
Anyone doing that I just pass them in the left lane, quite legal.
If they really peeve you off then when you get home just jump onto http://www.police.govt.nz and click onto 'report a bad driver' and dob them in.
My pet peeve is the motorists that do the 80km or so on the road and come the passing lane off they go at over 100km/h then you catch up to them after the passing lane again puddling along slowly.

I think you'll find that more accidents happen at low speed than they do at high. Plus in the UK it was shown last year that actually the percentage of accidents caused by speed alone was only 7% Yes speed was a factor in other accidents but they jump on the speed band wagon so they can put out more cameras to make money (over there anyway) Here they do it so they can make money by stopping you for a few K's over the limit instead of looking at the driving.
When driving slowly people get bored and look around at the view, play with things in the car whatever and as people have said spend more time checking their speedo than the road. oooooooops was that a corner bang crash head on!!!!!

Burgers Post did not state weather he was talking about passing lanes or motorway.
If he is talking about the motorway then sweet pass on the left.
But if it's a passing lane, correct me if I'm wrong, but it clearly states on a sign at the start of that lane KEEP LEFT UNLESS PASSING.

I know what you mean here. You are joining traffic doing 100k's don't you think it would be a good idea to be doing that when you join ! ! ! ! !
It is partly down to the way they are taught and then it's down to the fact they go out without the family brain cell to help them realise what Twats they are being.

That's for sure.
Ever noticed that few people use the slow traffic lanes on the motorway?
It's all about not letting the other guy past, because then he will "beat you there".Gotta win.
As for passing on the inside; there's a reason this is not allowed in more sensible countries.

What I find amusing on the motorway is that when you encounter two lanes merging into one, every one gets into the right lane of the two. This leaves a long queue that holds up traffic way back. All these drivers sitting in the queue get soooo pissed off when you head up the left lane (particularly in a car) passing about 60 stationery vehicles and then merge like a zip. The newmarket onramp is good for this, because there is usually no way to get into the right lane.
That manoeuvre has caused serious road rage in a number of people, these folks must have some heart problems by now. When I get the finger I just smile and wave. Best way to piss them off more.

it's not about blood pressure, stress whatever. It's about safety. If I pass traffic in the LH lane & I'm in the RH lane then I can be pretty safe in assuming they'll stay there unless they're coming up on traffic & there's a risk they move right & don't see me. For which I can anticipate.
If I come across a traveller in the RH lane & a clear LH lane then straight away my senses assume they're gonna do something stupid. Yeah, easy enoough to shift pass them on the left but certainly under an element of danger. Much more difficult to anticipate.
Yea, slow drivers are a big pain. But youse fellas wif motorways don' know how lucky you are. Here in the provinces we got one lane each way - makes it doubly hard to breeze on by Mabel and Stanley.

Of cource im talking about slow people in the right hand lane. There is no reason for them to be in the right hand lane, If they went faster (or at least the speed limit) I woundn't care as much. I win.
Oh and about nz not having fast/slow lanes, your only half right - There all slow lanes.:nya:

It don't feel safe using the right lane to overtake (or undertake) - just need one nonce to forget to indicate when pulling back in....and wipeout!
(afterall indicators are a bit of a optional courtesy as they only just brought in the "indicating off roundabouts" rule)
NZ needs to decide which rule to use - stick to the right unless overtaking OR free for all - why have both?

Yes, this is one of my pet hates too. I've got it down to such a fine art that I don't actually bother getting stressed about it these days. I can tailgate a car for kilometres on end without raising my blood pressure one iota. Of course, it gets a bit tiresome after a while since the concentration to do it and keep a bonnet is quite significant. My approach:
1. If I'm in the car - I either pass on the left if there's room, or tailgate them majorly until they move, or I pass them on the left if they don't making sure I pull back in with just a little bit too little room and scare them.
2. If I'm on the bike - there's lanes?
Don't get me started on cars/trucks not indicating lane changes, or bastards speeding up at passing lanes.

I do not recommend that you flash them. Especially in winter. Makes them drive right off the road and makes you very, very cold.

I hate those f%$kers who speed up at passing lanes too. You get that a lot here in Upper Slutt. Usually a clapped out jap import with smoke pissing out of it and 4 lil wannabe gangstas giving you a westside out the window. I'd love to give them a hard slap from westside to eastside for that crap.
Well glad thats off my chest.
