View Full Version : Fun on Hutt Road?

Bend-it
5th May 2006, 09:13
Overheard a little sparrow talking about cops chasing a black bike on hutt motorway yesterday. Came in from Lower Hutt, and turned off at Newlands, reported speeds of 200kph!

If you're on here, just wanted to say that you're a nutter!! :blip:

Comms centre was asking for a description, plates, style of bike etc and the copper went, "Nahh, didn't see anything... it was a black bike!" Couldn't even tell if it was a cruiser or a sportbike! A cruiser doing 200? Come on... Haha!

Someone even asked about laying down spikes... I'm sure the biker would have enjoyed THAT... Thankfully, someone else with some brains stopped them on that one

Are you sure that's not a piss take. I think that you'd be pretty lucky to get up to 200 along SH2 unless there was nothing else on the road. Damned hard to ake the Nelands off ramp at anything much over 100.

Ummm, not so. Got a bit carried away once on the way to work in the morning & hit 220 away from the lights around melling, before I looked down and saw the speed.

Spent the next couple of weeks shitting meself in case I'd been caught on camera.

Did I hear something on the news this morning about the fastest speed ever caught by an NZ speed camera was recorded recently at 182kmph. This is fairly quick but I thought it would have been a ittle higher? I hope it wasn't in a 50 k ares:shutup:

You cheeky bugger!!!! The mighty GS is a veritable rocketship - well compared to a Vespa or most cars.

But come on, you'd be working at it to get up to, let alone maintain 200 along SH2 between Petone and Ngauranga. I'd love to see someone try it though.

Seems like another urban legend to me.

I'm sure its possible, but I think you'd need balls of steel. Lane splitting at 200 anyone?

Read an article in Performance Bikes a few years ago, were one of the journos took a fully fueled R1 onto a peage in France & opened it up until the gas ran out. The full tank of petrol lasted 18 minutes. Musta been some buzz.

Right, time to feed the fire.

1. It wasn't me. I know this because I bumped into a fellow biker at lunchtime today who asked me if I was riding a [not black and not my type of] bike up Newlands at 230k getting chased by the cops last night. News to me.
2. The one on Melling earlier this week wasn't me either. I know this because I would have ridden from my mother's house (free shower while my bathroom is in bits), past my daughters school and then up to Melling at somewhere around 8.30am. Not a chance in hell I'd be doing anything in that area at that time dodgy enough to warrant any sort of runner.
3. Where can't you do 200k on SH2 between Petone and Ngauranga? Okay, traffic may be a mitigating factor, but if you're keen enough you can.
4. An indicated 260 is quite achievable on SH2 between Hutt and Ngauranga at peak hour. Ahem... so I've been told. And no, you dumbarses, there is more to the story than that.
5. 184 on camera? I admit nothing, but I bet there's someone in the camera office staring at a recent pic of a black bike wondering who the bastard is at a speed greater than 184. I'm pretty sure, at least when they first came out, the cameras got to 200 and then said "200+" or something like that. They didn't keep reading over that.
6. Just because you or your bike can't do something, don't assume that all bikes or bikers can't do that, or don't do that. A modern thou sportsbike would hit 200k easily within a standing 1/4 mile, needless to say it doesn't take much to get up to that speed, or down from it, between carefully spaced traffic.
7. Every runner done in Wellington does not necessarily involve me. Runners were done long before I was around, and will probably be done long after I'm gone.

now peak hour would be between 8 and 9am, and 260k between the hutt and
ngauranga at this time, a tad exaggerated me thinks

I heard from a very reliable source that the offending bike was initially spotted doing "approximately 200km/hr" along The Esplanade in Petone and then made a run into Ngauranga, Up the Gorge, where the Ecilops lost him.

I'm not advocating it, I don't make a habit of it, but I do know it's quite possible at that time of day. I should point out that it was "indicated", and maybe I did exaggerate a little, but the needle was a lot closer to 260 than 250. Maybe 230-240 actual then.

200k on the esplanade? Is that what sparked the pursuit or is that during the chase? I can understand it during, but sheesh, that's gettin big even by my standards if they were just doing it for fun. It's not a particularly smooth piece of road at that speed. I can think of safer places to get a buzz.

I believe that is what sparked the pursuit. I may be wrong on this point.

I used to get my RG250 up to 200 odd along Cambridge Tce (Paralell to train tracks) when I was 16, late at night. Very bumpy at that speed, would never do it these days, my brain has matured a little.

Its all very well for me to sit at the computer and post shit, but you got me, my balls are way to small to get on the back with you, why do you think i ride a triumph, 230 -240 is a bit more realistic i think

Very bumpy at that speed, would never do it these days, my brain has matured a little.I could really get myself in trouble if I told you how quick a 636 can go down Cambridge Tce, particularly 'cos the fellas behind me probably still want a word about that. But that wasn't the catalyst, that was the outcome.

Hunt - At the flying 1/4s the bike was timed at an average of 253, and the speedo was showing 270 going in and 278 coming out of the timing zone. So yeah, 230-240 ballpark on the hutt mway in peak hour is about right. And I should point out re: the mway, that was where the rider chose to back off. ANother rider on the same or quicker bike may have chosen to keep going!

I think it's all a bit unjustified to chase a motorcyclst like that on a Thursday night in the Hutt. Whilst that was going on, and for some time before and after, the Melling drags continued as per usual. The cage-racers do it every Thursday night and enjoy the benefit of safety in numbers. A lone motorcyclist is seen exceeding the posted limit and is pursued like a sweaty rapist. Maybe he was out giving the cages a "learn"??
