The clouds are called Mammatus clouds. They do not precede a tornado, or foretell a storm, but are formed when the air is already saturated with rain droplets and/or ice crystals and begins to sink. The worst of the storm is usually over when these kinds of clouds are seen. They are quite rare.
Those are some wicked images, cant say ive ever seen them before. but then again ive never been in a tornado either

I've seen them down here on the odd occasion. Not as pendulus as the photo's. Got talking to a fishing friend of mine not so long ago on this but we could not recall the correct name. Mammatus. Might be associeated with boobs as in mammory.

The photos' while not as spectacular do give a clearer picture of the variety of Mammatus clouds. If you take a close look I am sure that you have seen this cloud type but just have not recognised it. They are not common and unless you take a bit of interest in the weather, most bikers do, you may not have noticed them.
The last time I saw these were a few months ago when I was out at the Waimak. I got talking clouds to a fishing mate and pointed out the unusual cloud formation.
