Evenin' all
Not wanting an argument here, just some quiet debate amongst the members.
Do we ride or drive our motorcycles?
I have seen a number of media reports lately, and even a posting on here about 5 minutes ago, that suggest the riders have driven their motorcycles, or he was a motorcycle driver.
To my mind driving suggests steering, and we do not steer motorcycles.
It is my personal belief that we ride, not drive. I don't turn around to those that need to know and say "I'm going for a drive", I say "I'm off for a ride"
I don't ring Jimbo and say "Do you want to go for a drive old chap?" (although I might as well as he is sooo feckin' slow :baby: ), I say "Geeza, wanna go for a ride somewhere?"
Your thoughts?
Ride a bike, drive a car. Inheritance - you ride a horse, but drive a coach.
However, the law encompasses riding as friving. So any reference to driving in laws includes riding .

I wobble my bike.
Well, yes, there are those for whom it should perhaps be "drive a car; crash a bike"
Not meant at you, good Sir.

Ride a bike and drive a car. On top of is riding, Inside of is driving. In my world anyway. Each to their own I spose.
And you can roll your bike, but it's a bit harder to fall off a car....while driving at least.

The engine 'drives' the bike. I just hang on for the ride.

I go for a thrash on the bike and drive the car. :scooter:

ditto on that one :)
To my mind driving suggests steering, and we do not steer motorcycles.
I'll attempt to elaborate how I understand this:
In a car, it goes where you point it, you simply turn the wheel in the direction you want to go. If you're going round a corner, you have to keep the steering wheel turned throughout the corner.
On a bike, you push/pull on the handlebars and shift your weight to coax the bike to lean over and turn, but during the turn little or no pressure is required on the handlebars.
The control is not as simple and direct as just steering a car around a turn. You have to plan the turn in advance, set the bike up for it, and essentially "ride" the bike through the turn.
Differentiating between "driving a car" and "riding a motorcycle" acknowledges these differences.
Therefore, I ride. :ride:

I "ride" my bike - but if someone said "drive" I'd know what they are talking about - unlike some of this TXT crap - so I guess relative to that, using "drive" is acceptable.

We ride motorcycles. For heaven's sake.
But , just to confuse the issue (cos I like doing that) you go for a ride in a car .
And what about sidecars, and trikes? Do you ride a sidecar? Or drive it?

I would have called it going for a ride on a bike.
But in a car, if you are going somewhere directly or have an idea where your going, i would assume that would be called a drive. however
if you don't know where your going in a car/just been picked up and don't know where your off to, it could possibly be called riding in a car.

It's live to ride, not live to drive.
Driving anywhere today just feels like a lifetime.
