Can only tell you about the Suzuki naming conventions.
GS = four stroke with two valves per head
GSX = four stroke with four valves per head
GSXR therefore is a four stroke with a four valve head (racing).

Then of course there's GSXF, GSF, and now GSR. And that's just the inline engines. There's also SV and TL for the V twins, and apparently some other designation for cruisrey type things.

Bugger, I think I need a cup ot tea and a lie down.

Apparently there is some logic in there somewhere.

Ahh.. that explains a bit...

Now I know that "R" stands for Racing :) (In some cases anyway)

Suzuki had a sort of logical naming sequence some 25-30 years ago, which has been added to, but not really changed too much. Prior to 1973 Road bikes were either A, B or T.

More recent example are:

1st Letter
G = Road D = Off road 4 stroke T = Off road 2 stroke R = Moto-cross
For the rest I'll stick to road bikes

2nd Letter
S = 4 stroke
T = 2 stroke

3rd and 4th letters
X = 4 valves per cylinder
S = Semi faired
F = Full Faired
R = Racing

Numbers
750 = Capacity in CCs

Subscript letters
Model Year
M = 1975
A = 1976
.
.
.
K5 = 2005
K6 = 2006

I'm not too sure how TL got in there because I'm 99% sure that they aren't an off road 2 stroke. :corn: :corn:

First bike was an AG100, that think was missing a R = Arg 100

Next one IT, that was missing a SH, infact I wrote it on it with vivid SH-IT

Now I got an RM, this is missing a H, that stands for real money hungry.

What?

And the T500, whist a 2 stroke, was not really an off-roader.

The truth of it is, just as many westerners think Asian charcters look "cool", many Asians think letters of the Greek alphabet look "cool". Hence all the name badges plasterd all over Japanese cars, and the proliferation of letters stuck on bikes. (and the letter "R" is considered to look extremely cool)

But the T500 Titan, T350 Rebel, and T250 Hustler were the last of the old T series in 1972 before the naming convention I described came into force. The T250 became the GT250, the T350 was replaced by the GT380,and while the T500 was produced alongside the GT550 for a short time, the last of the T500s did have the letters GT on the back of the seat.

Twin Litre Race, and Twin Litre Sport
I THOUGHT TL WAS 'TWIN' IN AN 'L' CONFIGURATION .

Ixion

There was a "genuine" GT500. Differed from the T500 in having the GT750 front end (with only one brake disk), different carbs and inlets, slightly different porting, different instruments, the GT750 tank, and some gearbox mods.

Phoebe is a GT500, Tessa is a T500R

And in the early TS bikes,S was for street,M was for motocross....like TS400 and TM400.I liked the Suzuki names better - TS250...Savage,TS400...Apache,TS125...Duster - and there were Stingers and Wolfs and Honchos and Hustlers,Titan....and unfortunatly the customer named Waterbus/bucket/buffalo.

The GT550 was called the "Indy". The names were mainly for the US market. I had a T500 and loved it.

The Gt550 was officially the Indianapolis, but almost always Indy. All racetracks, but the names were only commonly used in the US.

Velocette had two good ones, Velo Venom and Velo Viper.

Always lusted after a TS400 Apache! Wanted to turn one into a street bike! If I had it would have been an early supermoto, eh? Ah, the '70's...!

Aaah yes. My first bike was a Stinger. T125, two stroke twin. Damned clever in some ways. With the engine hanging off the bottom of the frame and the cylinders almost parallel to the ground cooling was reasonable, and decokes, etc were a breeze.

Was a damn sight quicker than my mates SL125 too!

But the TL's were V configuration?
I suppose it is a "L" the way it sat in the frame.
LOOK AT IT THIS WAY IT WAS MARKETED AS THE TL1000R , TWIN LITRE 1000 IS THE SAME INFO TWICE , TWIN 'L' 1000 ISNT

I did my license test on one of those.I had to borrow it off a mate, as they had just brought in the 250cc limit and I had an RD 350
