View Full Version : sin bin ????

The Sin Bin got me thinkin in the weekend, i dont really know the rules, but people like SPB, recently got binned, for whatever reason.

SPB, as far as i can tell is fairly well respected in the KB community.
Now there is a lot of shit slinging on this site" i have recieved plenty and given lots ..as far as the people involved most i have ridden with, and some i will ride with in the future." now here's the thing---
there are a lot of people on the site, that dont even own a bike, and some of them are very very ,, good at starting arguments,
Most people i talked to are PISSED" that SPB got binned,
my point is this, should people get binned for speaking their mind on a forum ?
even though we like riding with em, i mean surely its between the two or more people havin an arguement" and thats it. iIdont think its caused any psychotic killings yet,, so why bin people..???maybe a poll would be fairer"

make it a jury rather than an judge (mod)...!!

My point above, (some people dont even have a bike) relates to the fact, that we all get together at the end of the day and go for a ride as friends you put a face to the name, you get to see the "true person"
you never see the people that dont have a bike , yet they may be the cause of the binning!!!

i would like to make this a constructive chat/thread, so please give me your opinions...

Sin binning is only carried out after either a complaint is lodged or we (the mod's) notice something going on. Then it is discussed by the mod's and Spankme. A decision is then reached. There are probably more people not getting binned despite a complaint then those that do get binned.

The rules of the site are clear enough, break them enough times and you'll get pulled into line. Note that a binning doesn't stop you from actually posting. Oh yeah, no-one gets binned for just speaking their mind on normal issues. But threats, personal attacks, multiple log-ins, etc will get you binned.

Nothing wrong with speaking your mind - however when it gets to being blatantly abusive, both on the threads and via PM and rep, then the line has been crossed. Sinbinning, IMO, is a good thing. It can give the binned person a chance to think about the way they put things and cool down. I don't see the harm in the mods being able to make that decision. Who, besides the mods, would be on this jury? Who takes any notice of poll results?
The system as it stands works - no need to reinvent the wheel.

Sinbined...I didn't even know you could be sinbined, considering some of the posts/comments I'd read I'm guessing it would have had to been really bad for that to happen.

In relation to SPB in particular, I've been offside with him before. He didn't like my view, I didn't like his view. Can't say I found it a problem, and I hope he didn't find it a problem either. We agreed to disagree. So f***ing what? That's what grown ups do.

KBers in general. Yes, well, there's plenty of whingy whinny things on this site with an inflated sense of their own importance and belief that they're so right that everyone who disagrees with them must be wrong. Who cares whether they ride, what they ride, what they post or what their thoughts are. Some people just take things way too seriously.

I think the sin bin is like sexual harrassment. It's only sexual harrassment if someone takes it the wrong (or right) way. Telling a chick she has a great rack doesn't instantly cost you your job. Telling the WRONG chick she has a great rack gets you strung up on the rack.

I understand that it takes a moderator to stick someone in the bin. Let's face it - KB is not a democracy. Don't forget that. It's an internet forum, a website. Nothing more, nothing less. Sometimes people lose sight of that.

Most of the moderators can not sin bin anyone, I think there are only 4 mod's who can (including SpankMe and Wari). Anyway, it is still a collective decision.

It really depends on whether speak their mind is just a euphemism for being rude.

...Freedom of speech is a myth, there is no such thing...

Freedom of speech is not a myth. You are well within your rights to publicly speak out against the government or government policies in a peaceful manner.
Freedom of speech does not, despite popular beleif, mean you have the right to say whatever the f**k you want to however the f**k you want.

..

Even if a person has a bike, that's no guarantee that you'll be able to "put a face to the name"

Firstly, and obviously, they may be at the other end of the country. Even in another country. Even if they're not, there are a good many of us who deliberately eschew KB rides. For various reasons. So you never see us , either. Nor does that imply any personal objection. Just KB rides aren't to the liking of everybody.

End of the day, sinbinning comes down to the sort of bahaviour that would get you banned in a decent pub. And the nature of the other party is relevant too. Some people can be expected to stand up for themselves and take some rough treatment. Others need a bit more considerate treatment. Nothing wrong with that.

But that shouldn't be used as an excuse or rationale to dish shit out.

The only thing of any value that any of us has, is our reputation. Some people are extremely protective of theirs and will not easily take personal abuse or ridicule. Despite how thick-skinned some of us may be, there is always a tipping point. And also in a "family", people shouldn't stand quietly by and tolerate another family member copping unnecessary or excessive abuse. Well, not in my family anyway.

That's where you are wrong. Kiwi Biker is more than a forum. Unlike many other Internet forums, many Kiwi Bikers meet and know each other well in the off-line world. And even if it wasn't, that's still no excuse for being an arsehole.

It’s an impossible job trying to please everyone and it gives me a headache trying to. Some want absolutely no restrictions, while others would like to see most of the site content/members to be deleted/banned.

The only person who can send members to the Sin Bin is myself, and I only do so after reading the advice of the moderators who do a great job helping me out. It’s a thankless job where they sometimes receive abuse for doing so.

A lot of complaints are received, but most I ignore after reading the reported post and think, “What’s wrong with that, harden up”, or just laugh hysterically.

If people are having such a problem with the running of the site, I go on many rides so am available for discussion/suggestions which I prefer to do face to face than online.

Spankme, you made the site. You set down the rules. You run things the way you see fit. People seem to lose sight of the fact that you are not obliged to provide this place for them to congregate, air views, talk bullshit and generally enjoy each other's company. Don't try to please everybody, if they don't like it, they'll not participate. The reality is the only way this site will survive is by staying with the rules and only stepping in when things get out of hand - as you have done so far.

If any of you/us don't like - leave.

One thing I learnt from the beginning. Mods do their jobs well and there is no point in disagreeing with their desicions, it doesn't shape up well.

I like SPB too, at one stage he was a real arsehole, but thats just one of the traits I like about his personality. Others don't like it and maybe thats what caught him out.

It isn't our place to ask why friends were sin binned, the mods would tell all if they wanted all to know.

I was sin binned but the other fuck heads involved in the argument weren't. I wont cry about it cos it won't change me and it is only time. My only problem is with the cliques and favouritism that are clearly shown by certain mods.
