View Full Version : Stand Up Comedy?

Have many of you been to stand up comedy? Sam and I have been to amatur (Sp) night twice now to support a mate, and I never realised how fun it was... ok honestly some of the newbies really suck and because I've been twice I've also noticed that if the newbie is up there a second time they tend to repeat the same jokes... but still a great "cheap" (only $5 entry, and then drinks on top of that) night out.
Is anyone going to any of the events for comedy fest? Recommend anyone in particular?

I will never go unless its a well known name. I spent 7 years of my life being a joker and I sucked at it. No point at being reminded.
You are right, it is fun, but only if you hit them in the head with a rotten tomatoe

its good fun, Ive done it a few times. Or rather i used to. I haven't done one for about 18 months though.
The MC's are really good, it shows the contrast between the pro's and the amatures.

Yeah the guy who MC'd the first time we went was the best guy on stage... and the MC last night was really good too :) I thought it was going to suck, but it really was good :)

Fuck, come round to my place when I'm pissed and stoned. It's fucking crack up and it's free!
I got escorted out of the club and to the bar cause I was heckling, they gave me a beer and asked me to do an open night. I refused. Fuck that shit!

Nights at places like the comedy club can be quite variable, but the good nights more than make up for the not so good ones.
As for the comedy festival, there are a few different acts I'll be going to see. I'll likely see Andy Parsons again (bald pommie guy, that narrows it down :)). Plus chuck in a few of the international acts such as Arj Barker, Stephen Amos etc. Phil Nicol steals the best titled show of the series "Nearly Gay".... hmmm the mind wobbles.
The smaller caberet style venues are much more fun as it's more intimate and you can knock back a few bevarages while enjoying the show.
Get amongst it, laughing is second only to adrenaline.

I just saw Brendan Lovegrove (MC) there among others the weekend before last. Bloody funny. He's dirty as f*ck so dont take your old Auntie Maude 'cause she will NOT approve.

Image how much fun HE had watching Kiwis play cricket.
Professional Stand up is much easier to write than deliver - (first hand experience)
I'd go to the festival.

funny you say that. he was the only bright star with the bat in an otherwise less than average season!

28th of April - proabably the same or similar line up.
Heaps of fun - but a word of advice to anyone who has never been there - don't sit too close to the front unless you feel like baring the brunt of a lot of jokes. :)

Where you there when "Lobster" had his skit based on ginga's?
Yeah last night we were one table back from the stage and this chick at the table infront of us got given shit by almost every comedian on stage through-out the whole show lol, felt kinda sorry for her, but the tart wouldn't turn her cell phone off and it kept going off

No I missed Lobster. Anyone with a cellphone on in a public place deserves everything they get - that would have been good.

I used to pay a fiver to go an see Ardal O'Hanlon and Craig Charles in East Finchley. Spending $80-$120 at the Town Hall just feels wrong.

I don't know how much the comedy fest is... but the comedy bar is $5 - $15 depending on the night, and drinks are on average $6. Not very expensive

We don't have one down here, so we only get "names", so they stick them in relatively big venues.
MInd you, it's still cheaper then travelling to Auckland to pay $5-$15 :D

What you talking about Jim2? The comedy festival is coming to your neck of the woods - http://www.comedyfestival.co.nz/ A lot of shows are only $15-$25. A couple of the bigger ones do go for $32 or $44.....

The Comedy Festival gets advertised around the rest of the country and we're just supposed to know it's on. I missed the last one completely. Didn't even notice anything in the papers or any signage or anything. A bloke I work with noticed it when he went to buy Hi-5 tickets. He picket up a pamphlet at the MFC and saw that it had finished two days earlier.
Besides a festival is a little different to just rocking up to the Comedy Club or similar venue for a night out. I still think $15 is too much as a cover charge for a local comedian.

I can never keep up with those guys at Indigo - it's always different, including when they forget to tell you that they've booked a different band for 6:30pm on Fridays so we don't need you tonight - no worries, now you can help me carry my 150kgs of crap downstairs please.

lol went to the open mic nite again last night...
And Sam and I were right up front in the center of the stage... the MC and 6 out of the 8 comedians took the piss out of us... was all in good fun though... the MC took the piss about me being from Zimbabwe, and out of Sam from being up north lol... he asked her "got any pot?" and she replied "not enough for you" ahaha yeah!
Our mate that we were supporting sucked last night, which I think was because his new girlfriend was there and his mother was there, so he played it down and sucked.
Funny little indian guy took the piss out of indians... couldn't stop laughing, then he hit on Sam, which made me laugh even harder, obviously don't have a lot of dykes in india...

This is on my list of things to do again soon!
It is hard to watch someone who is struggling up there, and nothing they do seems to improve things.
Standup's a lot harder to do than it looks I would say.

Been to a few at the Comedy Festival in Wellington over the years - the Irish guy was funny (can't remember his name but he used to joke that he looked like Darlene from the Roseanne show!), and I've also seen Raybon Kan and Ewan Gilmour. I'd go more often if I lived closer to Wellington, but I find a lot of the stuff we see on tv is crap. Too many of them piss themselves laughing at their own weak jokes.
Paul, do you mean Penis von Lesbian? Oh that's right, he decided NOT to change his name from Dick van Dyke!
