Im sitting my restricted this arvo after having my learners for almost a year now! Ive got the L plate bolted on my bike (first time in 10 months) and everythings sweet bike-wise but to be honest Im more than a little nervous and would really like some advice. What's the tester going to be looking for, I know about both feet on the ground at stop signs and not speeding etc but what about the little things?! Im really worried that im gonna make a wrong turn or something, would you be failed for making a wrong turn?

Calm down. Breathe. Relax.

It's ok.

No you won't be failed for making a wrong turn. I tried to on my test and the guy honked his horn so I knew I was going the wrong way.

I know about both feet on the ground at stop signs

Funny how they teach different things, different countries. Oz they teach the "ready position" whan stopped i.e. left foot down, right foot back brake, first gear, clutch in, ready to move off in an emergency.

Me I use both depending.

Hey, you'll be fine. Don't stress about it......

A couple of pointers in a recent post http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=28937&highlight=restricted, with link to another (FAQ?) post inside!

If you mean you're worried about turning down the wrong street, as long as you make the turn correctly (road position, indicators etc) then it isn't a concern. I turned down the wrong street on my full, no problem at all.

All the best!

PS - exaggerate your head movements. They need to know you are looking in the mirror or at hazards.

They will follow you in a car. If you're going from the Tory Street site, dollars to donuts you'll go up to the carpark behind the Newtown Park stadium to do your tricks.

Stop at all signposted intersections, use your indicator as necessary. Obey the speed limit. Do regular visible head checks into your mirrors. There is a roundabout to go around on your return at the top end of the Newtown main street. Use your indicators appropriately.

"Tricks" generally comprise a mix of slow turns, circles in both directions, figure-eights, etc. He will also simulate an emergency stop from about 70kmh. Don't overcook your rear brake. Or fall off.

Make sure you cover the clutch lever at all times.

Good luck!

Afterwards you'll wonder what you were worrying about!

Obey all the road rules and you'll be alright. You wont fail for making a wrong turn (unless there is a sign telling you not to!).

Feet down at stops, exaggerate head movements (looking aorund all the time).
Keep below the speed limit. Indicate all turns and lane changes. Indicate when leaving a roundabout. Dont tailgate, dont cut anyone off, and obviously no lane splitting etc.

And most important:

RELAX

10th May 2006, 13:03
it will be a breeze :)
stay relaxed
dont speed, make sure you stop at stop signs and indicate 6 seconds (3 at give ways)
don't cut corners, i got points off for "cutting the corner" when turning right.
Just ride well like you know you can, you will be fine.
The instuctor is not out to fail you, quite the opposite.
Good luck! :D

Take a few deep breathes in and then let them out...
do that a few times..

OK feeling better.... good

If the tester is in a car, just keep an eye on your mirror as he/she will indicate to you which way you are to turn in plenty of time...

Make sure you indicate and make sure you turn the indicator off.

Indicate at roundabouts... especially just just before exiting them.

If coming up to lights and they turn ORANGE.. then stop safely, as some can fail you...

Keep to the correct speed limit.

Make sure you have your license on you as the tester will be asking to see it.
Be polite to the tester and chat but not too overly friendly to them.. lol.

If you are meeting the tester in a big carpark... indicate even getting out of there... lol.

Take a deep breathe and let it out just before you take off on your test.

YOU will be fine and pass it with flying colours...

Just relax, pay attention to what the tester says and try to do things to the letter. Like any other time you ride, one of the worst things you can do is be really nervous when you get on the bike cos nervous = mistakes. So chill. You'll be fine.

Hey Hels, you'll be fine. I actually ended up having a smoke with the instructor dude before all of my tests, he was a crack up. He did comment on one thing to me about my position on the road and at intersections, ie not being in car blind spots and at intersections not to be too far left or right in my lane, due to cars that cut in on you (being a keen biker himself, he was very wise and kewl!). So maybe take note of things like that too. Oh and also be aware of potential hazards, like crest of hills, parked cars, kids etc incase they ask you to describe some. You'll be fine babe, just tell him you're nervous and they may allow a little for being tense. Good luck, let us know how you do!!

I know about both feet on the ground at stop signs...
?!? Are you suppose to do that? Didn't think twice about it when I sat my full a month ago. Don't know the rules, but honestly, I'd be more impressed if you only used one foot and kept the other on the peg. Why, simply it demonstrates you have control over the bike, are able to maintain balance, and most of all, are confident in your ability.

I'm very cautious of bikers who rest with both feet down and pull away with both feet in the air, like they're trying to keep balanced while acclerating. Give 'em a wide berth.

Don't do what I do and balance with no feet, that might come off as over confident ;)

Im really worried that im gonna make a wrong turn or something, would you be failed for making a wrong turn?
LOL, I took two wrong turns and missed three on my recent test. It's all good. If nothing else you get to demonstrate heaps of perfect u-turns :D

Good luck, or if you've already sat it, how'd it go?

Ixion
10th May 2006, 15:45
You don't have to put both feet down, but it is often suggested as a good idea on the test because it clearly shows that you have indeed come to a dead stop. If you put one foot down the tester may not see it.

I have heard that taking a wrong turn is no problem, but if yoiu actually LOSE the tester you will be failed (a) because you can't finish the test , and (b) because it shows you were not using your mirrors.

A hint I've seen also is to deliberately misalign your mirrors so you are forced to move your head to look in them. Once again, making it plain to the tester what you are doing. If you can see in the mirrors just by rolling your eyes , the tester cannot see that you are doing it.

This probably applies more cruisers than sports bikes, where you've got to move your head as well as tuck in an elbow just to get some sort of idea what's behind you.

I would say very strange in deed, I went throught the Hendon School of Vehicle control (UK cops) the ready position is to use the hand brake on the final few feet/inches of stoping, brake foot to the ground, gear foot ready for the quick changes as you move off.
