View Full Version : Kiwi Bike Insurance
Twas the time when the annual sinsurance bill be due on my motormacycle. So I traversed the tinternet looking for some companies specialising in bicymakewl insurance, and found this company:
www.kiwibike.co.nz (shit ye not Spank - snot quite the same URL as KB).
I flicked them an email requesting a quote, and I spoke with a lovely lady named Donna, wife of the man they call Dave me thinks
Knocked $500 off my existing annual bike premium they did, with quality service to boot.
Recommended.

I notice their 3rd party is only up to $100k. Lots of cars around that are worth more than that!

But it seems fairly unlikely that a bike is going to write off a whole car.
One would hope.

The man is Dave Hewer who with his brother Kerry do a lot of motorcycling. Last I saw them they had a V-Max & Honda hornet. Very competitive as is Classic motorcycle Insurance in Hamilton.

It's for that reason that I originally discovered Kiwi Biker -- I was checking out deals for my soon-to-be-acquired ZRX1200R.

Uncanny, Hitcher, that's exactly what happened to me! They gave me the best price for insuring my recent purchase (ZX12R) which I expected to cost an absolute fortune to insure. Dave took the time to *talk* to me which was most welcome and quite unusual nowadays. Excellent service, good rates. Highly recommended! And I stumbled on KB too! :)
are they underwritten by anybody? ie. a major insurer.(couldnt see anything on their website)
anyone got a claim experience they can relate?

Underwritten by Swan, I think. Haven't made a claim yet so can't comment. Service is excellent otherwise.

They're brokers for a handful of insurers. They'll sell you the policy that works best for you and your bike. I'm with Swann.

Dave & Donna are awesome to deal with.
I even got a small check back from them for $40 because they over quoted the premium, along with a phone call to apologise for the mistake.
I doubt any others would have done that! I like dealing with someone who actually rides and really know what we need.

Yea i used them when i got the GSXR, i went through my history and they didn't hang up on me :gob: thats a first, good history though :innocent: honest.
Was very good $1300 a year and i'm in the highest risk most laugh at, i had to pay $2400 for my GSXR600 with Swan.
Havent had a claim experiance, but my years up soon, alas the GSXR is a race bike now so wont be re nrewing just yet, but if i get back on the road or buy another road bike i will use Kiwibike for sure, they are great to deal with indeed, seems weird it's taken this long to surface on these parts

Would they cover for Non-Racing Track Training Days? This is the only reason I deal with Vero via The Honda Riders Club for my bike Insurance. Would look at insuring my work van with them too, as FMI want me ta get professional indemnity insurance within six months of insuring my van with them as well or they threaten ta cancel the policy cause quote: "We don't insurance for only one item". Fu*ken ass they don't, had single items insured with them before (sorry bit of a rant there:shutup: ).

So Swan are still going? I don't hear the name much these days... used them for all my bikes up til the Buell. Now I'm with Protector, $700 pa for fully comprehensive insurance on an 'Agreed value' of $16,500, excess $1000. When I had to make a claim (due to being rear-ended) they not only replaced parts that weren't part of the claim, they also let me KEEP the original parts.

most companies cover non racing track days... as long as they are not timed, or race trails..

If you do more than 100k damage to a car you aren't going to be worried about 3rd party insurance.
In fact you wont be worrying about anything at all ever again.

Its 1000,000 not 100,000 the website is incorrect. Dave is going to get this changed soon.
and 1 million bucks damage to anything (YER RIGHT)

I did get a quote from Kiwi Bike ins. to insure my ER6 but ended up with CLASSIC.
Would like to use this to plant some free plugs for this company. The ladies were ever so friendly and helpfull, the price is right I am paying $408.90 per annum for a brand new $ 11000 bike excess 500 for accident 1000 for theft.
BUT, as we all know the proof of how good an insurance company is comes out when you have a claim and here is where I can sing a definite song of praise.
Classic at this stage had not even cashed my cheque when I got whacked 11 days after I picked the bike up. They paid up and never tried to go stingy on me. Anything that had the slightest scratch on it got replaced by brandnew items no questions asked and they gave me the money for a new brainbucket the instant my house-content insurance turned me down. Looks like I am gonna stay with CLASSIC for a while.

Second this; these guys are great to deal with and saved me heaps. Even set up my temporary cover for me while I was driving back from Aucks. Excellent service and great price (but you need to be 30 or over)
I think Dave and Donna were a tad busy yesterday!
They got my business, cos they saved me over $250 a year on my new bike!
Great to deal with too :-)

Well of the 3 different options they came up with for me the best one was still $250 MORE expensive than Protector. Maybe if I talked to them on the blower I might be able to get a better deal??? (somehow I doubt it...)

yep, maybe.
I got some quotes last year from them, they weren't too bad but still a bit more expensive than David Golightly...but it is always worth a revisit!

SO the moral of this story folks is ta shop around, aye.

Then you have to compare plans as well.
I think my excess is only $500...whereas others are *mostly* $1000...and who can find 1K that quickly? Not me thats for sure ;)

Swann (via Kiwi Bike In) First claim excess is $500, for Vero (via David Golightly) was $700 (for me, have had a past claim 2yrs ago for a bike Insured with FMI). Both are $1000 for Theft Excess (pays ta read ya policy every now and again, aye:msn-wink: ). Do ya think I would be changing if my cover was not at least matching my excessing Insurance? I think not.
And yes I am still covered for Track Training Days (as long as there is someone Instructing me at the track amd it is not a "timed" event). Point to be made with that is that I am not covered by ether Policy for open track days or racing. If there was Instructing at KB Track Days, I be covered (but would still be prudent ta check with my agent before any Track Day). Just something ya want ta check before ya put ya "baby" on a track, aye.

actually David was talking about getting training days set up with the insurance co paying most of the cost, dunno what has come of that...
I used to be with Swann for ages with my other bike, but this time (last year that was) they came out waaaaay more expensive than other co's ...dunno why? So getting more quotes, just to see again
