It just occured to me that maybee us Kiwibikers can support one another when it comes to work on our bikes or other stuff.
If Im gonna shell out my hard earned cash I'd rather pay someone I know rather than a stranger.
I'm not a lot of use in my current job--I sell cars and vans and the occasional bike for a living.

I still live at home, so I suppose I can speak on behalf of my dad, who can try and help anyone with any airhead beemer issues from around 1950 thru 1990. 25 or so years experience and lots and lots of bits available. Apart from that I can't volunteer our workshop but if you ask really nicely and need something fixed and can pay promptly, maybe you might be able to wrangle a deal out. Not cheap, but generally the work is done properly, or at least as you asked it to be. We do have a small lathe and various welding appliances. However anything structural on a bike is out as there are safety issues and the business wont take the risk.

Aye, but it's not how hard you work which dicates what you get paid, it's how much of other people's money you're responsible for. Sad, but generally true. It's kind of like insurance in a way...
When computer guys cock-up, it can often mean a whole business can't make any sales and has to pay staff to sit around and do nothing - that's expensive, hence the pay.
CEO's can make bucket loads cos if they cock-up, companies lose millions and the staff lose their jobs. Consultants and accountants save people and business lots of $$$.
A lot tradespeople work really hard - long hours and a lot of effort goes into their work - but sadly the work itself is generally its own reward. This is true of teachers and nurses too (although one can't really put a dollar figure on someone else's life).
There are plenty of exceptions, especially in specialty areas, but it mostly holds true...
Yes, I tried to stay out of this, but sadly I am also a computer guy. I run my own network support business. And yeah, I do ok. I don't really think its different to any other trade. I have met many a computer incompetent academic who thinks networking is just about reading books. Knew a person once with more degrees than the farenheit scale, still didn't know how to unscrew a floppy disk drive from a cage...Bring back apprenticeships, but that's another thread...
PS - the equipment can be more expensive than you would beleive! Especially when it comes to software...

I did some Pro*C work for Port of Wellington a few years ago, mainly to create EDI documents.
For the DB size you could try:
set pages
set lines 10000
set trimspool on
select file_name||'|'||substr(file_name,instr(file_name,'/',-1,1)+1)||'|'||bytes from dba_data_files
UNION
select file_name||'|'||substr(file_name,instr(file_name,'/',-1,1)+1)||'|'||bytes from dba_temp_files
UNION
select member||'|'||substr(member,instr(member,'/',-1,1)+1)||'|'||bytes from v$logfile f,v$log l where f.group# = l.group#
UNION
select name||'|'||substr(name,instr(name,'/',-1,1)+1)||'|' from v$controlfile;
Spool it out to a file and open it in excel. The | is the delimter. It'll give you the locations/sizes of all your datafiles, tempfiles, controlfiles and redo logs.

Consulting advice (you think tradesmen charge lots?) for developers generally on what they should/have to do to avoid acoustic problems in their crappy buildings. So if you live in an apartment and you can hear the neighbours, it'll be because the developer didn't pay attention to what someone like me wrote (or it was done by one of our competitors and they cocked it up... we don't do cockups... honest!)
Happy to tell anyone what they should do if they've got problems with noisy kids upstairs (gag them)/toilets flushing/traffic noise etc etc. in their homes (just don't ask me to come look at it or I'll have to "make you pay")!

well. a huge day for me today. first up, went flying, instructor was happy, so i flow solo for the first time. it was all quite emotional really - had to pull myself together to remember how to do a touch and go! then, phone call from auckland - "i'll be down to buy your bike tonight". yup, the aprilia has been sold. i'm havin a little weak moment here, seeing it ride off into the distance was a bit emotional really. so now i'm bikeless, although i do have a one owner, 5000km honda c50 that i bought for $50 last week if i get really desperate.....
and on top of that, in sympathy with, and out of respect for spud, i too have decided to come clean.
i have pulled the pin from the force after 13 and a bit years. i'm actually still employed by the police, but i'm waiting for my perf to come thru at the moment, hence i'm not working. i've decided to go back to aircraft engineering for a bit, but my long term goal is to go flying for a job. doesn't pay all that well, but it's what i want to do, and that my friends, is the most important thing of all.
and i've only written 2 tickets out to motorcyclists. one to a gang dude on a tricked $40000 v-rod at 149km/h, and one for a 197km/h effort on a GSXR1000 on swamp rd after paeroa in 2001.

How come geeks like you guys wanna play with bikes?
So you're on an internet forum and wondering why so many people also on the forum are computer geeks ???
If you went to a bike rally probably the number of geeks would be less because that rally is open to every biker that can get there. But now you're in a "rally" where only people with access the Internet can attend. I know a lot of non-geeks now have internet access but I'd say because of this the numbers are higher than you'd meet in "on the road".
I used to be a cage dweller until I rode my first bike, being into computers had nothing to do with either addition.

Don't be shy about it (I guess you haven't really)on the gixx and ZX12 sites most of the coppers use patrol cars ect as their sigs,no-one gives them too hard a time about it.

i have pulled the pin from the force after 13 and a bit years. i'm actually still employed by the police, but i'm waiting for my perf to come thru at the moment, hence i'm not working. i've decided to go back to aircraft engineering for a bit, but my long term goal is to go flying for a job. doesn't pay all that well, but it's what i want to do, and that my friends, is the most important thing of all.

I hear you Marty, most are a combination of speed/stupidity/not driving to conditions, and unfortunately the only one detectable is the speed part of the combination hence it gets targetted. Speed is also a factor in 'not driving to conditions but alas that speed might still below the legal speed limit :angry2:
Sadly the only fatal biker crashes around here have been solo bikes going (wait for it) too fast to make it round a bend.

yup - the biker dude was: 3am, heavy rain, over 100km/h (speedo needle imprint on back plate at 115), been at the hamilton south end drinking establishments, on a left hand corner cresting a hill, across the centreline, head-on into a car, wearing jeans, windbreaker, skatie shoes, on a CBR900RR, aged about 30yrs.
i cannot think of any fatal crash that i have attended that hasn't had speed or alcohol as an aggravating factor, so you'll excuse me if i'm a bit cynical

man.. I saw DBA's and thought i might not be the only sound geek on here! I'm an Acoustic engineer (no, I don't do sound work for bands).
I am an EHO (figure that one out) and sometimes monitor noise levels from a wide range of sources, usually industry. You must do a fair bit of work for pubs and the like would'nt you ?
I used to do residential noise control also, but now that is contracted out to a security firm. While I enjoy a bit of loud music myself, I once served a notice on the local mongrel mob (with a Police escort of course).
Oh yeah, I considered doing acoustic consulting to verify vehicle noise levels, with all the hoohaa about boy racer's exhausts etc, but considering the limits are pretty low (85dBA from memory) MOST if not all aftermarket exhaust systems would fail anyway.

19 deaths in a month due to fatal crashes is my 'record' - one that i wish i didn't have.
and the last fatal that i attended was a biker.
The most recent I had anything to do with was a quadruple fatality in which one of the cars ignited. It was an isolated area and the fire service was a long way away. Consequently this led to a very interesting experience later in the mortuary. I've never attended a fatal involving a bike, thankfully.

When I lived at Okato the local cop (sole charge, of course) finally had his fill after one particularly nasty one - bike comeing around a long sweeper (legally), and a bloke towing a generator pulled out without looking. Bike went into the generator at 90 km/h.
Of course, being a rural cop, he attended all the local crashes. That was just his last straw.

Arr good, another developer that like hassling the DBA. Shoes on the other foot for me as I'm hacking code for the next 6 months and presenting it to the crew I used to work with as a DBA.
Funny thing is the DBA loves it. Most of the other developers he works with don't get much past basic joins, and then whine about DB performance when they make multiple queries and futz with data in the application layer, or don't want to learn about how to take full advantage of the tools.
Me, I'm lazy. I'm not gonna rewrite Oracle in Java when I can get it to do subselect and UNION magic to make my life easier, and if a little effort on my part learning about function based indexes makes things hum along, well, so much the better when it comes time to talk contract renewal. I have my eye on a pretty little RF400, and I got to pay for the toys somehow.

Ahh, well, the officers who attended mine can tell you about one that didn't. Just the stupidity of having these five words:
Learner. Driver. Subaru. Legacy. Turbo.
I now know what a Legacy looks like upside down, since I somersaulted over the bonnet. Actually felt a bit sorry for the driver, though. Like the law says, he had a full license driver with him. You'd think she would have mentioned that doing a U-turn on a blind bend wasn't a clever thing to do.
The cop who attended had an alarming story about having had one of his patrol cars peeled in half when he'd stopped on the motorway, lights flashing, and someone travelling at 100 km/h "didn't see him".

Your DBA is probably glad to have someone that actually thinks about how the data will be pulled out rather than just doing the same thing they always have for the past 10 years. I'm in a team of 6 developers now, a couple are legends the rest are fairly average. Coming from a DBA background performance is all I think about.

I've only parked it there twice and usually when I bored at lunch on a Friday. Normally it's in the part alongside Mobil on the Park. Not sure why they put those wings on the tank, maybe so it would look a little less like the monster. Who knows. To be honest I didn't like them much until I actually saw one. I saw the new Season 1 pack in Real Groovy. It's almost tempting to replace the current box sets, considering how much shelf space it would save. Although Bab 5 is hardly the worst offender on that front (Buffy, anyone?).

I too am in the Environmental field, but I work in with 4 large companies in the manufacturing side, cleaner production etc..
And one of the companies makes DUCT TAPE !!
Yeah, it comes off the coater in 25,000 meter reels 1200mm wide ! :yeah:

Well for a bit of varity this Winter (from Horses Shoeing), I have been pulling tits twice a day (80 nipples at anyone time, and getting up to 800 nipples each shift), and teaching the young how to suck (around 80 of those little buggers now). Would enjoy it more if it was not for the 5am wake-up, and all the shit that gets flung at me on a daily basis.
But on the + side I get to ride the company bike daily:ride: . A big powerfull CT125:Punk: (must admit I'm enjoying playing in the mud with it, but it would be better if the company director got the front wheel bearings fixed (front wheel wobbles like you wouldn't beleave:shit: ). Font brakes work (just, only because I worked on them, although he did pay for the replacement cable).

Well it is Saturday and raining and I'm bored at home.
It is interesting that this thread is so long as it reflects the interest that we all have in what we all do to make a living.
There also seem to be a high incidence of IT types and a reasonable number of tradesmen too.
I like a few others I am neither of the above. I am 36 and have a philosophy that mundaness is death. I don't believe in the "carpe diem" stuff and all that pop philospohy, but professional boredom is just the worst.
My first job was an Army officer (Artillery), then a commercial diver, then a marina manager, then a dive instructor, then a yacht technician/skipper, then a marina manager, then a dot com administrator, then a boat builder, and currently a buyer for a boat yard. I did these jobs in England, Germany, Carribean, New Zealand.

I'm a Oracle dba mainly (95%) but have done the others in my previous IT life (used to do heaps of Novell Netware, general PC stuff and the odd bit of c++).
How big is your Oracle DB ?? I've spent the last 6 years at a very large govt site looking after various DB's there.
Ha, you boys are only playing with toys . DB2 mainframe DBA. Now that's a Database....

I see this thread has been revived, well then....
I don't currently have a job but I have had lots! Sales, carpetlayer, fire-fighter, protection officer, security consultant, medic, CSR, martial arts intructor, painters hand, labourer, teacher/trainer, and many others. Currently too broken to be allowed to work, but surgery coming soon should fix that. Then I can ride again, yippeee!
I have a garage and a few tools for anyone that needs a hand to fix stuff on the Nth shore, I also am happy to help those who wish to practice their riding skills in carparks etc. Can supply cones and and other useful equipment.
