View Full Version : SPANNER EVENING--MECHANICAL TRAINING

FROSTY
10th May 2004, 11:07
I finally pulled finger and the basic mechanics training evening is happening.
Wendsday the 26th of May
time will be from 6.30 on.
The location is at my place,
Which is Helena st
Massey -- West Auckland.
To find the place.
From the shore
Get to westyland via Upper Harbour drive
Go over the END of the nor western motorway
Turn left at the roundabout into DON BUCK ROAD
Stay on don buck road for aprox 4 km
You will pass 2 schools and a Mobil gas station
Helena st is on your left

From south or central
On the nor western Motorway take the LINCOLN RD offramp
at the second set of lights turn right into Universal drive
stay on that road till the roundabout
Hard right at roundabout into DON BUCK RD
Don buck road goes uphill steeply and nice and twisty
Top of that hill turn right into HELENA st

I'll park the race bike and the gtr1000 out the front so ya can't miss the place
I think I have enough tools for this
An A grade mechanic has offered his services to run through this stuff
for us. He won't accept cash --Hes a biker himself. But I think its only fair we all bring along a few beers to show our apreciation.
The format will be -basic bike mechanics 101 - How to set up your bike and do the basic maintainence to keep it on the road.-From there we'll move on depending on how we go for time.
If anyone has one of those outdoor gas heaters it'll be apreciated cos its probably gonna get a bit cool .
OH yea and a guy who sells paddock stands/pit stands and work benches has loaned me a couple for the night
Please advise me if you are DEFINITELY attending
cheers guys.

I'll be there!

Those paddock stand/pit stands, are they those things that you roll the bike onto and then they raise the bike up? I'd love to have one of them, I've got a bad back and working on my bike all weekend crouched down has left me kinda sore.
'course I'm a student so can't afford one. It'd be interesting to see how they're built though...

I was wondering if we have an auto electic expert in our midst?

Posh Tourer :P
12th May 2004, 11:52
I did the electrics on the beemer, but that was pretty simple. I can read a wiring diagram but thats about it really. I have never even looked at any of the computer controlled bike systems....

Other than the basic mintenance of battery how to replace damaged wires, how to operate a multimeter, diagnose probable faults etc it is a bit specialist to cover in one night.
I guess that is why they are called experts.
Teaching KBers how to burn their own eproms may just be a little outside the scope of your intention.

I know a couple of guy's if anyone in particular wants to learn or pay them for their knowledge.

I have an eprom burner. What spec eproms do bikes use? Assuming you wanted to change the program, where would you get it?

Dunno but the dude that sold me my last bike left his job to burn them full time for cars and bikes.

My understanding is he burns them to replace standard ones when people change pipes etc. Much cheaper than a power commander but you have to start over again if you upgrade again.

He reckons you plug his laptop into the bike and the dyno, tune it, take it to the burner plug it in and it burns the chip according to the specs you selected to give the power curve you chose. or even a couple so you can swap between commuting and going for a blat or track day. Dunno what he chages though.

cdi no idea, can do the simple stuff though, such as coils. If theres an issue I usually reason it out though, so i dont have founts of knowledge straight off...

Well that was an interesting ride back home at 12am. Truck with a massive Yacht on the back coming down the hill with all the pilot vehicles and whatnot. Had to stop and wait like 5 minutes for him to come down it.

Cheers for the excellent ride down RIB, and the slight detour in our little cruise Frosty ;) Excellent night, I'll certainly be down for the next one.
