View Full Version : Ducati & Honda threads ( bolts & nuts )
Can someone please tell me if Honda VTR 1000 has metric fine threads for all bolts/nuts? Also do Ducati ( 91-98 900SS & 88-9? 851 in particular ) use metric fine? I need some taps for my 85 Honda to clean out the threads on the frame after painting it, and am trying to decide whether to buy just the ones I need for this jub, or to buy a set of taps and dies for this bike and the bikes I would like in the future. Really want a Ducati 851 or 900ss, but $$ a bit short so might get a VTR1000 until more funds become available. Saw one go on Trade Me last week for $5050, was a 97 with 80,000 km but had service records since 20,000 km.

I'd be inclined to just buy individual taps as required. That way you can purchase just the plug (bottoming) tap if you intend to just clean an existing thread. Individual taps, either Sutton or F.E.W tend to be mostly High Speed Steel, where most tap & die sets on the market are just carbon (tungsten chrome alloy) and are shite. Some tap & die sets include weird oddball sizes that you will often never encounter, or alternatively give you every pitch but the one you need.
If you're in East Akld there are a number of engineers merchants in your location & it should be reasonable to expect most metric fine taps to be stock lines (particularly somewhere like Blackwoods/Paykels in Carbine Rd.)
Ok thanks for that. Maybe I should have given more info. I am a toolmaker and machinist by trade. I bought a UNC/UNF set of taps ( plug ) and dies in carbon steel many moons ago for cleaning up threads, and they are fine for that purpose ( carbon steel is fine for cleaning up, but not really any good for cutting new threads except on free maching aluminium ). Covers 1/4" - 1 1/4", and is the best $180 I ever spent. I was looking at buying a set of only metric fine taps and dies in carbon steel, ranging say 4mm - 12mm. I wasn't looking at those 5000 piece sets that have every tap ever made including Russian submarines and Nuclear power stations!! Really I only want to know what thread VTR1000 and Ducati use, cos if its not the same as my current bike, I will just buy the indiviual taps for what I need now.

re question. I've just used old bolts and nuts to clean threads. Just cut a few groves in the threaded portion and taper the ends on a grinder.
