I'm thinking of getting some leathers, was at the local bike shop, they had a couple of one piece suits for under a 1000 bucks still more than I can afford at the moment, would try and see if I could lay-by them, would have to get new boots to go with them, my dryrider gear is good, but I,m thinking good to have a second lot of riding gear and the leather race type suit look's the go, but then you get called a poseur and that puts me off, what do you's think leathers or just get another set DR gear.

Others will have their views (Minotaur leathers) but I bought QUASiMOTO leathers, and they're f*cking great!! Really comfy, good fit, and from all accounts (on here) good in a bin.
$280 for pants
$320 for jackets
$80 for gloves
$200 for boots.
$700 for the one piece suits.

Nope I don't get a discount or nuthin'. Shit I prolly won't even get a beer. In my book it's just good to get good gear.

I've got a one piece suit and while it's great for riding it's a pain in the backside when you stop somewhere. Plus there's no pockets. I would suggest getting a 2 piece suite.

Nothing but abstinence beats leather for protection.

Quasi's leather goods are really good quality but what's with the oval holes in the arse cheeks for?

When My wife decided that she would like a two piece leather suit we went to 9 different bike shops (5 in Christchurch, 2 in Dunedin, 2 in Alexandra) and none of them had anything suitable. Then we went to Leather Image in Christchurch, a fasion leather stroe, and they had the best selection of bike leathers that I have seen for years.

Almost all of the bike shops had some leather gear, but it was mainly 1 piece road racing gear, and they all wanted to sell my wife Cordura gear rather than leather. So if you want good leather gear look at places other than bike shops. You may just be suprised.

Have to agree with that. If you're gonna do heaps of trackdays then look at a one peice, but a 2 peice is so much better for the road with the occasional trackday.
Finns right about the protection as well, I don't feel 100% comfortable in anything else.

Good thing about a one piece, is that if you come off and end up doing the penguin slidy thing and slide forwards with your feet in front, the jacket doesn't roll back on ya, which means the road doesn't turn into a ham slicer on your meaty bits on your nether regions and back.

BUT: ever tried to get in and out of a wet suit when it's two sizes too small?

If you are into contortionism, go for he one piece but cart ya missus around so she can peel it off when ya need a breather.

Isn't that why it's a good idea to have a jacket that zips into the trousers? Of course, you have to remember to actually do it.. muttermutter

Oh , and if you should come off and really hurt yourself, I believe access is easier for medical folkies if you are wearing separates.* (Plus you can go to the loo... and not look like a racing wannabe... and stuff)

* correct me if I'm wrong

One of the many good reasons for wearing a back protector as well....
Like leathers, you don't appreciate them until you get one and then you wonder how you felt safe without it.

Thats where I reckon a good two piece outfit is mint especialy if they're zipped together. Doesn't matter height, size, roundness just mix and match to suit.

If you go for the two piece make sure its a zip together jobbie. I find Im way more confident wearing leathers than dri rider gear.

You mean giving up riding?
I bet you were a damn sight colder than me on Sunday though.
I have to admit I was wondering why I wasn't completely toasty coming home. The next day I realised the jacket vents were open.

Leather is best. Get a zip-together 2-piece. Check out Quasi & MotoEquip (gotta support our own first, eh?). Their gear is as good or better than anything else available & at a fraction of the cost.

I'm thinking of getting some leathers........snip
.......... leather race type suit look's the go, but then you get called a poseur and that puts me off, what do you's think leathers or just get another set DR gear.

Hey John,

Just by coincidence, I stopped at Botany Honda to look at leathers myself yesterday... nice to have a second set of gear, but for me the protective/safety aspect is probably main reason, so it'll be leather if I get anything. Also after nine months of riding, I figure I'm hooked, so it's probably worth spending the extra dosh.

Don't know anything about leather gear, but it seems that there's the 1 piece, and 2 piece race suits, then the separate leather jackets and pants more for sport riding. Though the full one piece race suit gives the most protection, I reckon it suits the younger guys on the sports bikes more than nanas like me on a sports tourer. Also the separate jacket and pants, especially in black, don't look too out of place in town, (I think) so you don't feel like a poseur if you wear your leathers into the shopping malls.

So I've got the Alpinestars catalogue at home and will probably get the Alloy jacket and Bat pants...the alloy jacket has a weather resistant liner, but no connection zip, to connect to the Bat pants. Or maybe I should spring for a better jacket with a connection zip... just how important is the zip...:wait: and should we get the gear now, or wait for summer??

I dunno, any help appreciated....

Noted... now I have to find one. My mates are no good, they just laugh at my flapping and twisting :wait:

I can see people's points about gear "suiting" you, and not wanting to look like a racer wannabe, but if you come off, don't you want the absolute protection??

I'm certainly not quick (and many will want to say that too :nya: ), but I want to know when I'm sliding down the road I had the best protection, no matter if people laughed a bit.

1 piece leather is the best protection, ideally coupled with a full back protector etc etc.

Hmm... sounds very interesting Dave.

I see the city store is open tomorrow, are they doing it there, or just at the warehouse place?

You know any more details on it? Minimum spend? etc...

Cheers for the nice words guys, Mine and TonyB 's gear are excellent quality and as far as mine goes has proven results ie in crashes it stays togther, that should be all ya need.
Remember the only reason its cheaper is because there is no retail margin in there, if there was it would be around $740 for one of my Jackets. You will likely find also that my gear and TonyBs is made to a better spec than alot of big name brands.
I know IM biased but if you are in the market you should check out our gear.
By the way Colapop, your gear is on a plane on Monday.
Also I have 500kgs of leather here by next weekend, I wil have alot of it at the trackday for you all to check out.
Cheers

Thanks for the help, have a lot to consider but one thing Ive found is that everyone agree leathers over DriRider gear, don,t think it would matter too much if its a 1 or 2 piece suit would only wear it when out on a long day ride or trackday would use the DR suit for everyday to work and the shops, will get called a wannabe racer but from what your all saying is the safety factor out weighs the poseur so I can live with that, will check out motomail and Quasi cheers

Feeling a bit under dressed are we ?

If you have the option I would go for a zip together. You can't predict what sort of crash you'll have and the last thing you want to be thinking about when you're sliding down the road is .... maybe I should have got the zip together !!

Buy now or wait till summer... well Cordura is warmer ... leathers... cold in winter... hot in summer. Your choice

zips are very good... ask Cibby about her off. When you come off, if you are sliding feet first, its very likely the jacket will roll up exposing your tasty flesh to the tarmac. Some might say you're unlikely to slide feet first, but you don't want to be taking odds on how you will be coming off.

For the gear, tighter is better, it stops the armour from rolling around and moving out of position, and not protecting the areas it should.

That said, your body changes sizes according to the weather, and in summer you will swell a bit, so don't get it absolutely snug for winter. Of course, leather will also stretch a bit in the beginning....

Winter wise, unless going for it, I would normally say cordura, it keeps you dry, and is easier to dry properly. Summer, leather is hotter, but also protects you more...

Ive just brought a pair of Quasimoto pants, and I must say that they look to be really good quality (of course im no expert, but i have heard alot of good feedback). Only problem is I got the wrong size, so need to prolly go up a size or two. However, I was able to get them on (just not do them up, got the waist measurment a bit off), and they definently feel a shitload more sturdier than my cordura pants, so im looking forward to riding in them once I have the right size. Next will be the jacket.
