My 1990 XR 250 dies when I go thru big puddles
the engine cuts out (wait about 10 secounds and then the heat dries it out and it starts stright away.
go to another puddle and the same thing.

doesnt even need to be a big puddle (I was riding at woodhill )

Is there a mod i can do ....or should i replace the spark plug cap or something?

Cheers

doesnt even need to be a big puddle (I was riding at woodhill )

Do it again in small puddles and check where the splash goes.

What is even easier is to do the hose thing and start by spraying from the bottom up. When you find the offending part....

Bike should have a drain hole(s) in the spark plug well, that take the water away, if these are clogged, as mine were last weekend, big puddles = instant death of bike.
Poke a piece of wire thru them, and they should come right.

Think XRs still have a sticky out sparkplug, haven’t paid much attn to them but my old XR250 did. I’d be looking at a new plugcap & silicon around the joins at both ends. + the hole clear idea.

On a 2 smoke it is pretty darn easy as the plug is exposed & you can get those NGK marine plug caps from jetskis, but won’t seal on skinny plugs.

no leaks in the mag cover? thats a sure fire killer. it may have a crack it it.

you could try

start the bike,

get a hose and lightly spray adn area, see if it kills it. find the area the is causing the problem then fault find from there.

Don't use a hose, all you'll find out is that the motor stops - use a squirt bottle of some sort, with a touch of something in it to take the surface tension out. You'll be able to spray a bit more acuratly and find out exactly where the problem is.Do it at night or in a wardrobe and you might see some tracking too...

Mine did that. put some silicone around each end of the sparkplug cap so its water tight or near it and ride though some water to test!!!
