Okay guys & girls, some of you by now must have burnt a full tank of Shell's new fuel.
Shell is advertising this new fuel as improving your fuel economy so has it noticeably improved, is there any other behavioural changes or suffered any fuel related problems?
My bike is still running Shell/BP fuel bought back in early April and it値l be another month before it値l get its next fill (I知 cycling much more for exercise ). Even then, it値l be quite sometime before any results are known
I知 quite sure a number of us are interested in finding out what we致e all collectively experienced based upon the original thread, which somehow I can't find back.

I'm halfway through a tank (although I can't guarantee that the service station didn't have a mix of new/old in its tanks).
Can't notice any difference, although my first impression was it was worse.

I've had 4 fills.. and the first fill, I thought I gained 30kms out of a 17ltr Tank to get 260ks.
But other fill's, I've had 230k's from a 17ltr tank. (So I'm guessing my Air Filter is filled with oil again - which I'll be checking tomorrow afternoon).
So nope.. no noticeable improvements from using Shell's new fuel.

put a tank of it in the Primera and have got less K's then normal. They did say that you need to try a few tanks before you notice the difference, but I'm not too convinced.
has anyone noticed that the advert at the stations state that the mixture thats available commercially is not the same mixture that was used for the world record.

I believe shell's new advertising campaign is based on the idea that if you bullshit people, they'll be too lazy to actually follow it up and prove you wrong.

Isn't that what all advertising campaigns are based on?

I Fill up with it, and no differance at all. I must of had 3 tanks by now. As soon as I saw that add on tv, I thought bullshit - just like techron.

The techron is a reputable fuel system cleaner. However, all the fuels have stuff like that in.
Shell's propaganda actually says:
"Through a combination of vehicle maintenance, improved driving styles and choosing the right fuel, we致e shown customers can make a real difference to their own mileage figures."
Now that's an out, if ever there was one. No guarantees.

and in the meanwhile, they have all purchased at least 3 or 5 tanks of your fuel and forgotten why....

I never go to a particular chain of stations, and never look at the price. I need petrol, they sell it. I just assume all their marketing crap is either lies, or damned lies. Equally, I've never noticed any change in the running of my vehicles from using other brands... even running Challenge back in the day when everyone reckoned (you know, heard it from a mate of a mate) it was better for V8s. I just keep everything tuned right, no problems.

Yes. Less money in wallet for beer and Rum because of the rip-off price of petrol...
I did a thread a couple of weeks back about how I improved my fuel ecconomy by 25%!! - for small fee I'll do the same for you....

Last year on a number of long rides i did notice a slight increase in fuel mileage when using Caltex of around 1 km/l. It wasn't enough of a difference to make up for the price difference from using Shell, but over 2 or 3 tanks full it was evident.
The diffence was only really noticeable on long rides where I would be using at least two tanks of fuel in a single day. Shell would take me 280 - 300 kms before the fuel warning light would come on and Caltex would take me 300 - 320 kms. I expect that the new Shell product will produce similar figures to Caltex.
I should have more data when I get back into long rides at the end of winter.

Challenge imported all your fuel so it actually was different to the other big 4!

I tend to use Caltex and Gull.
BP is out because they always start each round of price rises, there are no Shell stations on my route and Mobil made my cage run shitty.
There's scientific reasoning for you.

Had two tanks of the shell stuff and it's been the worst mileage i've ever experienced on the triumph doing my normal daily commute. Barely 170km from 13.5 litres. I swear I'd normally get 190 or so around town previously.

*cough* 20% *cough* (here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=28831&highlight=increase)).
No unanimous concrete evidence yet, seems bit of a mix bag of results. Looks like I won't be tanking there for awhile, maybe more negative than positive
From experience and watching their adverts I'm sure these fuels primarily contain cleaning agents and hence why several tanks are required. Only cars/bikes which can do with a clean will notice an improvement and all others will simply be kept clean. That is of course assuming the rest of the fuel doesn’t give more bang for your buck.

Had a VW many years ago. Use to fill up with Caltex, (Boron) Rune like a dream. Mobil, run like a nightmare. Ran into a guy at party years ago, had a VW put in Mobile thing would ping like a china man playing ' pong. Don't use to this day.
Good sience is an experiment that can be duplicated and achieve the same result. . Must be true. Mobil is shit.

I've now run two tanks of the "new" Shell 91 through the STeed and it made not one blind jot of difference. I've currently got a tankful of the 95 in the Impreza, although given all the running that does, as much will probably evaporate as power its furious 1.8 boxer.
People will use Shell for the convenience of the servos or for Flybuys. The rest is just marketing hype.

Did a tank of the 91 to clear the lines of what was in it before hand... second tank of Shells new 91 gave me 208km from a tank before reserve light came on - no change in riding from previous gas.
Usually i average, 220km before reserve light, but have managed to get out to 270km when riding like a nanna.
Just finished a tank of the 96 straight on from the 91, and i only managed to get 189km before the light came on  Now, i did have to run the bike without the tank on in the garage to get some readings from the charging system, but some how i dont think that the >500ml of fuel (in the fuel pump) is going to make up the defecit of 220-189=31km...
Just for good measure i filled up with the old faithful BP 91 tonight, and will report back on thursday/friday i guess with the results from that (to see if there was actually any change or if i am just riding like a maniac lately.

The truck drivers who pick up the stuff tell me that shell, bp, mobil and caltex all get their 91 fuels from the same big stock tank, and each have smaller tanks of their own that contain the additives which get mixed with the fuel from the stock tank as they fill up the trucks.
So same fuel different additives.
If anyone ended up with some shit fuel it was probably contaminated somewhere between pick up and putting it in the vehicle.

How about a bunch of us actually do a before and after comparison.
Get the data together and present it to Commerce Commission or something - if it turns out to be BS.
Whos' got the Scientific backgroun to plan this out.
Y'know... determine if a "significant difference was made", A control car/bike, a test car/bike... double blinds, chi squared tests (or something)...

Not sure which stuff you get over there , but the stuf here doesnt clean your hands like the old stuff did ...now you sort to have to scrub, and as for cleaning paint brushes its hopeless !
No I fondly remember good old lead filled decayed dino juice .... My father and his father before im were using the stuff with no ill effects ...and the summers are getting nicer in alaska these days
It was cheaper to !

LOL!!!!!!!! Yep, if all these devices did what they claim we'd be making petrol as we ride! BUt of course, there is the law of diminishing returns... Only fuel saving device worth a damn is the throttle hand! Keeping the bike tuned properly helps too.:done:
