What's wrong with this tyre?

The race commentator saw this.....but not the pit crew,they changed the rear instead.No wonder he had front end chatter - there's a friggen hole in your tyre mate! Duh!

They saw it just as he was heading back out, about the same time as the commentator, but they couldn't stop him. They managed to bring it to his attn though as he was right over the front of the bike leaving the pits.

What I would like to know is, was it the front tyre that caused the chattering therefore destroying the tyre, or is the suspension out of wack and causing the chattering and then destroying the tyre? Seems Rossi has had this problem all this season, is it tyre related or chassis?

Edwards didn't seem to have alot of hassles. I was interested to hear that they're going back to the 05 chassis for the next meeting.

Yep they seem to be having a bit of bother with the 06 chassis. As the commentators said you an see Rossi getting faster and faster as the fuel burns off, and the weight comes down. He was certainly catching the 3rd and 4th places, and maybe would have got close to the Repsol boys.

Might have been simply a faulty tyre. I'm just impressed that he managed to keep the thing upright.

I'm guessing he's going to spew at Michelin. He was riding the arse off those tyres and the layout of the track saw the fronts getting tortured. Still, would've thought it'd be the rear that was the problem but I guess it's because they spend so long way over on the edge that the tyre doesn't get chewed up like normal.

It's funny though, Edwards got away to a blinder of a start and pretty much kept going at the same pace all the way through the race (Mr Consistancy) whereas Rossi is slow (ish) at the start and smokes everyone through the middle of the race.

Edwards ran a different rear tyre to Rossi, last minute decision to change, went to a harder tyre. The 06 engine doesnt fit the 05 frame, they have a new frame coming for LeMans this weekend based on the 05 (with more flex apparently).

Thats likely because he is running more rake on the steering geometry, or he might be running a few extra degrees on the clip-on bar angle.

From what I heard the surface of the tire delaminated hence the bit fell off. People have been talking about chatter, because there was a problem earlier in the season, but I suspect it was a tire that couldnt cope with the speed of that circuit.

So why was Rossi's the only tyre to fail?
Another aspect is Michelin have the strengthend the side wall to help out Nicky Hayden, maybe this extra strength/stiffness is also contributing? I think its a combination of a couple of things. Stiffer sidewall construction, stiffer frame construction, maybe altered steering geometery? All combining enough on the Yamaha to cause Rossi a few problems.

I suspect Colin Edwards had something to do with it - it's no coincidence that there was something wrong with Rossi's bike....and Edwards had the best race he's ever had in MotoGP.

Kinda suprising that no one seemed to notice, huh? Seems MotoGP dont have "spotters" employed like Nascar, then again suppose they've never had a need too. You'd think Rossi might notice his front mudgaurd disappearing somewhere along the way!

Rossi lost the front fender when the view changed to Rossi's on-board camera while going down Shanghai's looooong back straight. The commentators never noticed. The next lap you can see the fender lying on the track.
Now, did the fender come off and damage the tyre, or did the tyre chunk-off and damage the fender?

I never noticed the front mudguard was missing.

It'd be real interesting to know whether it was the mudguard damaging the tyre (that'd be my guess) or the tyre delaminating and damaging the mudguard.

The word from someone who works for another MotoGP tyre company is that it was a tyre fault,nothing to do with the chattering or Rossi pushing hard,let alone a guard falling off.

he said in the interview after that he bike wasnt near to 100% he still had chattering but just tried as hard as he could.With the bike being how it is he said he just had to watched dani and nicky pass him.Top effort :D

Yeah,top marks to Edwards,and I retract all my previous shit remarks about him,that was an outstanding effort.But Pedrosa is something else,maybe he's going to be better than Rossi (with 1/10 the personality),he's come into MotoGP right on the game,despite all the nay sayers spouting how he was too small,wouldn't have the stamina - he's been at the sharp end every race and wins his 4th....what's he going to be like when he finaly learns how to cope with this bike that's suposedly too big and powerful for him?
