Usually when they are looking for someone.
Might be a good place to do a breath test too - some people spend the whole trip in the bar, then jump in their car and head to Auckland...

Once I was headed to wellington from chch, and there was a routine stop at the top of a hill, not far from picton. I forget exactly where, but it was getting close.
Haha the old guy who checked my license couldn't believe I'd gone all that way at 70ks... I didn't have the heart to tell him I was really going 110 [full throttle lol]

My experiance is that idians and bikers get through checks pretty easy, as no one would be stupid enough to ride drunk.... he he he

I thought that too, until I went to a party with a mate on our bikes. I'm normally pretty good at noticing if people are drunk but my mate held it together well until we left. We pulled away and half way down the street I noticed he wasn't behind me so I stopped and turned around.
I saw him and his bike lying on the road where we'd parked and as I got closer I realised he'd vomited into his closed full face helmet so badly you couldn't see his face. He chucked and fell over.
Surfice to say pillioning him home was no fun.

crossed over a few times but never seen a full on breath test road block thingie like they do in Wellington.
However, believe it or not, the local HP do get familiar with the ferry schedule... So really, speeding, or other stupid behaviour on the Picton to Blenhiem road straight off the ferry is just plain asking for it...
