The other day aff-man and I went for a quick blat into Manukau. We popped into Arthur's Emporium (in all our gear) for me to grab something. Inside were these two kids, about 3 and 4 years old, with their mum. As we were standing at the counter, the little girl says to her mum (quite loudly):

"They're motorbikes!"

It was so cute. And rather amusing, as the mum patiently explained that we RODE motorbikes.

As we were leaving on the bike I waved goodbye to the boy and he looked so excited, as if it was the best thing in his day that a person on a bike was waving at him.

I've only ever had good reactions from parents and their kids when I've been wearing my gears.* Just interested in whether anyone else has had similar experiences. Or perhaps completely different ones?

* Apart from when I was at Mission Bay one Sunday afternoon with Aff, and I could practically hear all the mothers thinking, "Well! I hope MY daughter doesn't turn out like THAT!"

Yeah, I love waving at Kids, they always get soooo excited when you pull stoppies next to them at the lights...

It seems alot of kids love bikes. I was riding behind this car with a 3-4yr old boy sitting in the back giving me the thumbs up while he held up his little motorbike toy just about the whole way home from work today...
I quite often pass a group of younger school kids on the way home and they love it when I blast the airhorns. I wonder if they have the same enthusiasm for bikes when they're older?...

Little kids get excited as over motorbikes. Remember it was either my mum or dad who were approached by a little old lady, she was so excited over the fact that they had a bike. Even commented over wishing that back in her day she'd learnt to ride.

I get that all the time with kids waving at me.. even though i'm on a crappy DXMail bike..

I just think it's interesting that sometime between being a kid and being an adult, half the population seems to change their view from "How cool are bikes?!" to "Bikers are all leather clad, tattoo-bearing gang members."

Yeh I like waving... but my looks / size tend to make most people leave me alone to start with.

I'm just a child in a fat mans body

Haha, that's the best thing. Kids couldn't care less if you've got a 2006 Duc or a 1972 not-sure-what-it-is. They just think you're cool no matter what.

I think I just enjoy it because it means that at least SOMEONE thinks I'm cool.

I love how minor technicalities like that just don't matter a bean. Am I alone, or do others also want to regress into their childhood every now and then?

stopped to let a boy and his mum [i think?] cross while in feilding. boy actually tried to stop in the middle of the road cos he couldnt take his eyes off me, lmfao.
im only interested in responding to the younger ones....anything that looks old enough to be a smart ass gets ignored.

them kids is the reason why i ride with the local ulysses for thier toy runs and also why i also ride with the triumph group for their fundraisers.

Some kids can be charmers. You usually spot the future bikers when they look at you when travelling behind the car they are in. But there is also the other parent too.

Some time ago I was behind a SUV with mum driving the kids somewhere. I was just tagging behind and the kids were kneeling on their seats looking at me and waving. They should have been belted up. This was on Anzc Drive. Anway come to the red light and I pull up on the outside land and Mum lets rip and belts one of the kids for something. She had the drivers window down so I could hear that all was not well with her. Anyways I flip up my lid and call out "that's the way I was treated when I was there age.............now look at me." 'Bout the only time I wanted the Harley and tatts image. If looks could kill I'd be dead meat. Now if she had had her kids belted up in the first place they would not have been able to turn round and see me.

Every time I go round my sister's, my 2 year old nephew HAS to be sat on the bike. About three times per visit: getting him off is like trying to prise a limpet off a rock*. Puts on this 'I'm a mean, serious biker' face and hunkers down... my niece (12) is going to pillion soon and she is ridiculously excited about the whole thing. I'm forbidden to allow any other kids in the neighbourhood to sit on 'her' seat, or let them try on my helmet.

*he freaks out when I start her up, though- he hates the noise and bursts into tears..!

Had the same thing here in Palmy, the mother had to virtually drag her two kids across the crossing... This was the first week I had my bike (before my fall backwards off a wheelie) and I was still clumsy with the clutch, anyhow, I pulled a big wheelie (unintentional) off the crossing and I'm sure I heard the kids scream in joy... The mother must have thought I was cool or must have really hated me for being a bad influence.

Oh for the record, I hate kids...

I'd get excited too, If a hot chick in leather waved at me <_<

Yeah me too... I kinda want people to aviod me and say "look at that bad ass biker - get into the car quick", Once i was standing in line at maccas dressed in full leather, when an old lady and 2 5-7 year old boys pushed in front of me...

I love it, as others have commented, when kids turn around and just STARE at your out the back of the family wagon. It's funny. I usally give them a girlie finger wave.

Or the slightly older type staring out the back of the school bus giving you the glad eye. If only you could see how ugly I am.

we had a young kid (5 mabye less?) come up and pat our bikes while we were parked in cuba mall tonight, kinda scared he might touch further down the exhaust though...

i also get alot of people turning and looking and i always remember to wave to the little kids because they are tommorows cage drivers and im hoping they'll have some respect.

When I had my SJ125 (read - behemoth scooter) these two kids were argueing over whether or not it was a motorbike or a scooter - I just looked at em and said "Both."

And rode off.

Love kids tho, when I was a kid I always used to wave to bikes, esp on the motorway when you could do it like 60 bazillion times as the traffic sped up and slowed down.:p

They were all hoping their daughters would learn the lesson and avoid skinny ass, woolly-haired type fellas.

Both our (now) adult kids are clean cut, well groomed and not a tattoo or piercing between them - I wonder where I failed sometimes

Me too - both my daughters have ended up with guys who are sooooo straight,I feel it's almost a reaction against their parents.Although one daughter asked if I could get some of my old friends together to sort something out for her,she must think a bunch of 50 somethings look imtimidating....

I was sat at a set of traffic lights a month or so ago, lights turn green so I pull off at a relatively sedate pace. A couple of kids of about 10 years old at the side the road yelled, "pull a wheelie". I didn't . So one of them called me a "gay wanker".

Must be because I ride a Honda.

My kids and my nephews just lurve my bike. I've had mums with lil kids at the supermarket etc come over and want a look so I let em, its fun.

I scared the shit out of my 14 year olds boyfriend by answering the door fully kitted including helmet. He asked me in a stammering voice "are you a biker?" and I said "yeah so you'd better have her home by 9 OK?"

She's never been dropped off late since.

The best compliment I've ever had about my bike was when a cute wee kid told me my bike was his favourite one in the rank. Every day for a week or so when I was leaving he'd be waiting there with his dad excitedly to see me ride away and wave. His dad looked like he was getting pretty sick of it toward the end...

Almost every day my 2yr old daughter wants to go to the garage to see daddys bike. When my f650 broke down i told her and she started crying.

On monday my new bike arrived by truck...
Amberely was falling over herself to run and tell me (about 100 times) "Daddy, new bike here cool bike..."

Just another couple of years and she will be on a bike... just have to convince mummy it's safe.

Other kids, can also be great ego boosts, If they look round at me I always give them a wave and a smile. But this morning, I had a pair of crossing monitors shout, in unison, "WOW Cool bike!" tell you how good did I feel :-)

Yeah I love it when you get guys that are about 18 or older commenting my bike when im at the servos getting gas. Then i take of my helmet (with tinted visor) and they find out im youger than them

One guy said after i took the helmet off "sounds like a scooter tho" then he walked off :killingme

I rode past a school everyday and hear the voices of kids going on.... "wowwww a biiiiikeeee!!!"

Strangest comment I've had was "That's a really nice bike for someone your age to own" I couldn't think of a tactful way of asking how old she thought I was, so I just nodded and smiled.

haha..

unrelated story.. (well kinda).. went in to drop mail off at one of the schools in Hamilton (Catholic Dio - if anyone knows that?), anyway.. I was wearing my black jacket that day (can't remember why i didn't have my dxmail one on), and I'm the only DXMail person that wears a full-face helmet (with black tinted visor to add to that), onto the punchline.. walk in (with the visor down), and the secretary JUMPS, i put the mail on her desk, and then says "oh, i thought you were here to rob us.." BWA HAHAHAHA

Due to the fact that there are not a lot of bikes on the road compared to the numerous number of jap import cars, children seeing a motorbike is something special. Every day i get home from work my kids are waiting for a ride on the bike down the drive and into the garage. They toot the horn rev the engine and go for rides in the street and even help to clean it.

Kids love bikes you see it when they get their first trike and then their first two wheeler.

much joy for them
