Caught the news on 1 tonight and was blown away by the announcement in the sports round-up that Taupo has been given preliminary approval to host MotoGP for the next 7 years starting next year pending track changes and funding approval.

This might be old news to some - but it completly caught me by surprise.

Anyone know any more about this??

$12 k to secure the Moto Gp for Taupo we could just about do a Kiwibiker pass the hat around, 12 mils a touch deeper than most pockets stretch though.

I don't agree.

If its tied in with Tourism New Zealand, the money could be forthcoming.

Another opportunity to sell NZ as the adventure capital of the world and all that ... there's a huge market in MotoGP fans.

I think a few submissions to the government are in order.

Superbikes I could maybe see, but MotoGP? Be brilliant if it happened.

At least there would be someone in the stands, unlike several of the current venues. Nor would we need to consider running it at night so as to get a half-pie acceptable temperature (and to hide the fact that the stands and carparks are empty?)...

Certainly MPs would need to be educated as you could probably write the sum total of their collective MotoGP knowledge on the back of a postcard.

As far as Helen goes I suspect that $5mil for the arts is one thing, $12mil for motorbikes would be something else. Also she couldn't sign it and pretend that it was hers:whistle:

I too could see WSBK... and at a stretch MotoGP... But i dont think the seats would be empty... There was 20000 at Wanganui (even though it tied in with the Jimmy Barnes Concert) and i know a hell of alot more people would come to watch if it was high profile like MotoGP... Then there is all the overseas spectators that would come... I think we would do better than the amount of people going to Chinas venue...

Yep, remember the America's Cup funding from the government?

The argument has to be made in terms of overall benefit in terms of tourism, high technology development etc (think Virtual Spectator, composite material development and design).

There ere actually over 30000 people at Shanghai this year. Didn't look like it but they were all in the main stands on the front straight.

$12M for a bike race?
With engines?
Not in this country, only sports with world wide appeal like yachting gets money here.
And there's bound to be some taniwha that'll get upset by the noise and will need bulk money to soothe it's nerves.

Ok guys - lets no try to torpedo this before it even gets launched.

IF this is going to happen then we all need to unite behind who ever is trying to make it happen.

We are the greatest nation of knockers of anyone trying something new, so if ANYONE asks you about your thoughts on the NZ MotoGP - TALK IT UP cause you don't know who might be listening, maybe even someone who controls govt funding.

I don't think anyone ever thought we'd get the world Superbikes - but we did in the '80's, who knows, if we get MotoGP, maybe we'll get the Superbikes as well cause they might as well come down to this part of the world for two rounds instead of one.

Maybe Taupo isn't the best for these races, but until somewhere else gets built or improved - it's all we've got.

Has anyone heard what they are planning for Taupo?
If the international MotoGP board are considering Taupo, then they must be satisfied with what is proposed for the circuit.

Where will people stay - Auckland, Wellington, Napier and Palmerston North are all only a few hours of good riding away, if I can't get digs in Taupo - there is nothing in this world that will stop me putting in an early morning ride to see the best in the world racing, hell - I've just forked out $5000 for me and the wife to go over to Phillip Island in September and I would have found that money very useful to put into my bikes.

And while I'm putting my 2 cents worth in - don't forget that Hamilton got the V8's because they were willing to make it happen, and all Auckland could do was foucs on the negitives.

Good on Hamilton, and good on Taupo.

2 cents well spent there k1, im sure if this does go ahead in Taupo, the short burst from towns close by would be the way to go, how many would stay in Paeroa the weekend of the street race there?.......i have once, last year stayed at Morrinsville, worked just as well...... :ride:

i presume you are talking about the old track - the new track is great. i guess your 100's of laps of said track(s) though cloud your opinion.

why would they be 'better off' waiting? how would that improve the occasion? what if we waited and hampton downs wasn't a very interesting track? would we wait for another one to be built?

Would be great if the Govt backed it which they should do if the promoters have got any nounce. Broadcast to millions world wide, 1000's of overseas visitors, 100's of overseas bikers taking extended riding holidays on quaint country roads with hardly any traffic (and that would be our main roads) to see the beautiful scenery, more coming after word of mouth seeing the telecast etc etc etc
Heck the daughter might get to see Thomas!

Should we start a petition?
I can whip up a quick website and we'll see just how many people would support it. I'm sure we could get hundreds if not thousands of people sign it!
It would be freaking awesome for New Zealand. I'm sure each event would bring more than 12 million to the country every year, so what's the big deal?

All those in favour of a petition, let me know and I'll sort it out.
Something like bringmotogp2nz.co.nz or support4motogpnz.co.nz

Stay? My couch. $500 a night thanks :blah:

Stand? give 'em a break, they're still building all the facilities around the new track. There is a planned capacity of 30 000 spectators just for the dragstrip so I don't think seating will be an issue.

I'd rather spend my cash on doing motorsport than watching it but I still think it'd be great to have MotoGP here. I just hope their business plan has more items than #1: get the track to MotoGP standard. #2: Ask the government nicely for 12 million bucks.

Cheers
Clint

Hey guys and girls,
I've set up an online petition to get some formal support going for MotoGp coming to NZ.
If your interested, please visit the link below and sign up.
http://www.motogp.co.nz/supportnz/

If you can think of any more blurb to put on it, let me know.
I'll add functionality to be able to view the people and comments already signed up in a few days.

Cheers for your support!

Very much doubt they would just add another round. The teams would bleat that taking it to 18 rounds is simply too many. Much more likely that a round will be dropped. It would have to be a poorly supported and funded event that takes place at a sub-standard track that is ripe for the chop.

Trevor Mallard was just interviewed on Radio Sport.

The $2m from the government is conditional on Taupo getting a major event (amongst other things apparently - one of which seems to be raising matching funds).

On this basis, I fully support it.
