Anyone Running Shinko's New Sports Tyres, or am I the ONLY one?

2 weeks ago I fitted the new Shinko 003 stealth’s to the bike to see if they are any good. 120/70/17 & 190/50/17
I used to race on the 003 back when Yokohama were making them and I wanted to see if Shinko were making them the same now that they have bought the tooling.
Well I am some what impressed!! and for the $350 for the set, very happy with the lack of investment.
For Road use they are more than I need and they can still stick it to the track days.
Any one running these or the 005's ??

The 003's used to be the race special for the 250's & 600's, what bike have you got them on?. Would be interested to see how they handle a bigger bike on the road - dont know how good they would be in the wet tho. Do they still come in the different compounds?

We ran the old 003 in 250 prod racing way back and they were good. The new 003's i have on a GSXR1100 WP "see photo in My Profile" and we all know that these can rip up tyres.
The first 3 days on the tyres it was raining and they were better than expected. the 003 compound is very soft and the grip level is very good. The Old Strada's would light up in the wet where these wont. I am a big Pirelli fan and don’t mind shelling out the big bucks for the tyres but these were available so i thought i would give them a go.

Just to be clear... I am talking about the NEW Shinkos (003, 005, 006 and the 009) Not the tyres for the older bikes or scooters...

Cheers

Hasn't Shinko just brought out a new slick? Quite reasonably priced new as well, know anything about them, Rees was hacking round taupo not so long ago on a set reckon's not as good as the dunlop but for the price pretty damn good.

One of the Tokoroa 'busa boys is running Shinko's so that must be a fair test as he's still upright!

I think Shinkos are the control tyre for the motard series in Australia? im sure I read that. they are probably great for the road or slower guys like LB I guess

My ZX9R has got a new Shinko rear on it (much to my horror), but - so far, it feels OK - gets quite sticky - heats up fast and seems to stick OK on chipseal

How are they on the road compared to Bridgestone stickies (say, 014 or 012)?

I'd be keen on a set of those 003's at $350 a set.... let us know how many k's ya get from them.

roadandsport
8th June 2006, 17:53
I have sold the bike :bye: so wont know the amount of K’s. They certainly held there own as a good road tyre. They would cut up nicely when pushed hard. On the 1100 the back tyre would do about 6K to 9K Kms at a guess.
The thing that surprised me was the amount or grip in the wet from what is really a dimpled Slick.

We all like or dislike tyres due to a good or bad experience, but all I can say is that I have ridden with a lot worse than theses 003’s, and they are the brands we all know!
They were stickier than the Diablo Strada but not as good as a Corsa Pro.
Will I be putting them on my NEW GSXR-750K6??? One things for sure I wont be putting B-stones on it again!!!

Sorry, my bad... Have photos, but lost the USB for the camera... I'll find it eventually!!

Well, got them on, scrubbed them in.
First thing you notice is the big print on the side, do not exceed 270 kph...
Thats OK by me, only had the gsxr anywhere near that once.
The tread pattern is really quite good looking, and you would not know by looking at it, that they weren't any other big dollar brand.

The first outing on them was at manfield, on the Shaun Harris trackday Speedie put together.
It was a bit wet on and off, but dry on the lines.

Still learning to ride the bike on the higher side of the performance stakes, so I suppose you could call me a real world rider, and yes, I have chicken strips.... Mmmm chicken....

For me around Manfield, I was actually very impressed. They only ever gave the slightest tickle of not plantedness when crossing onto the front straight, over the wet starter markings, and once, when I hit some shiney concrete (an attempt to fix a groove in turn one) So over the paint, I had the odd back end slide, and on the concrete I had a front end slide.

The truest test, is that the bike is still undamaged from that excursion. The tyres didn't let go in a violent manner, and when they did, they regripped immediately after clearing the slippery surface.

The rest of the time, whether the track was wet or dry, they stuck brilliantly.

This weekend just gone, I took the bike to pukekohe, and tested her out.
I was going a bit harder this time, and the drift cars were out, making a damned mess of the track.

Nearly highsided several times, but the mix of mud, slush and oil several millimetres thick would have made any tyres life difficult.

As the track dried out, I found I was able to throw it at the wall of death (armco off the esses) with a lot more vigour than my testicular endowment allowed me to.

The tyres are plenty stoppy able, and when I can do a wheelie, I'll report back on that aspect.

I also commute on these tyres, and have found them to be faultless in this role. Wet and dry, under sane(and sometimes not quite so) commuting conditions and riding style, they have yet to9 come adrift at all. This includes on Cow shit (sorry bro) Diesel, wet oily roads... the whole gammut.

To be honest, I doubt in the dry, if you aren't a 100% rider that you could make them let go.

I'm racing on them this weekend, so we'll see how the pressure cooker treats them, and duly report back!!

yeah i am interested in finding pricing on 003's and any feed back i might try these as next set of tires.

I read some good over seas reviews.

I know shinkos few years ago use to be slippy, but there were plenty of local guys here who loved them, since they cheap

Drifting is the stupidest event ever. It's the iceskating/diving of the motorsport world. They should take their idiot 'judged' event back to their ghey boy Auto Salons. (yes, I believe judged sports aren't sports at all... if it's not measurable, it's bullshit)

Though it is really funny to watch some tryhard giving it a go...
This 300 zx turbo was driven there, towed off, fixed, driven back out, towed off, fixed, driven back out, towed off, then towed away in frustration!

In the race cars, some dude took a nice new civic typre R out, and did a good job of stuffing that into the armco in the esses (god knows how) and the most tragic event of the day, a nice Datsun 280Z real mint, spun and arsed into the armco, again, off the esses...

But i agree, the point is to go fast, not sideways, sideways is fun, but it aint sporting!

drifting has it place, many people would say the same thing about motorcycles being crap etc etc.

And drifting as to start somewhere, i rather these guys doing it on the track, then doing it on the streets!!! Just wish these open days would be more day for drifing, day for people who want to go arund and not smash in to walls etc etc

Yeah I've got the 003 & 009 on my blackbird and so far they are the stickiest thing I've had on it. I also wondered what the 003 on the front would be like in the wet and so far I haven't had a problem but I don't usually push it when wet. Tony

22 would be fun for drifting if it is made into 1-way only.

I had a shinko on my front but had to get it replaced a couple months ago because all the tread on the left side was lifting which made low speed riding a bit bumping and the steering would rotate left to right with the bumps in the tyre. Would hate to think what it was like at high speed.

I didn't think much of it cause the tyre had been in crash but my mate had exactly the same model on his bike and the same thing happened. Without the crashing part.

Last I heard the bike shop was trying to get the rep to look at them. But I don't think I'd put another one on for a while anyway.

Nah I couldn't remember what model it was but just had a look at a Shinko website. It looks like it was an 009. I've attached a pic of one.

Got a 005 on the rear - good in the dry - move around a bit in the wet - particularly across undulating surfaces, joins in the seal etc.
OK, but will throw on a set of Pilot Powers when Ive got my moneys worth out of them - or when I have to replace them (Im a tyre skinflint from way back)
