These are from what I can see, race car helmets. Very popular on bikes around the world because they look great:

I'd love one, I'm assuming they're reasonable protection.

Question is, are they alright for bikes? I'm guessing wind noise might be more, but I'm really interested in it taking the knocks. I've seen some impressive video of race car drivers getting heads banged out, so I'm guessing it's probably pretty strong... what say you?

Might not offer the same kind of abrasion resistance? Also motorcycle helmets have a smooth profile so they don't catch on anything in a spill.

I'd stay with motorcycle helmets designed to be used as such.

My brothers, ex's, brother used to to use one of these. Not to sure wot it was like, but it looked cool. Custom paintjob, looked like a gorilla wearing sunnies with the black visor.

I have a Bell helmet I used when racing single seaters, made specifically for that use. The aerodynamics are just as good, if not better than my bike helmets and the specifications were for International Racing regs. This approval number has now been superceded but the specs are still much higher than either of my bike helmets. I think you will find that the major difference is not in the safety of the helmet but in the size of the visor aperture. These tend to be much smaller than on motorcycle specific helmets. Large apertures are not required for race cars, in fact quite a few drivers used duct tape to make the aperture smaller still.

my mate brought one of those, it didnt have a weather seal around the visor, and the visor is held closed by means of a hole that closes over a plastic post just below the visor opening, its bloody loud when it snaps shut.

cool looking helmet, i just found the technology a bit primative.

Quite possibly heavier than a proper motorcycle equivalent?
If so, not so good for the neck.

the simpsons helmet in question looks to me like a storm trooper helmet... Or is it just me? Give the wearer a laser gun and surround him with Jedi Masters and BAM... Youve got a movie.

They're also designed with the driver having his head facing forward most of the time, and the car providing a measure of shelter from the airflow.

Turn your head to the left at 220 km/hr wearing a Bandit on a bike and see how often you ever wear it on a bike again.

Those Craft helmets look like the perfect solution. Right shape, but with a slightly larger visor :)

Well if you were only into space movies, like all the cool kids. You would then know what I mean. But alas, you musn't be a cool kid. But you ride bikes, and you have a hairy face, so you're forgiven......for now!

Cheeky young whipper-snapper, I know plenty of Space Movies - "Flash Gordon", "Buck Rogers", "It Came From Outer Space", "The Day the Earth Stood Still", "Forbidden Planet" and lots more besides :nya:

And I listened to "War of The Worlds" on the wireless but, because I'm not a Septic, I didn't flee from my home...

Cardwells I think... they used to be here in Chch, but now in Auckland. I know Sydenham Park Chev Spares here also sells them, might have to pop in for a look/fit/price.

I remember seeing something from the states that showed a replica stormtrooper helmet specially made for motorcycles. Legal and certified but I cant remember who made it.

Eric Wood's used to Have Simpson Helmets years ago, they may still be able to get them ? They were hellishly expensive though

Looks like about NZ$690 for a Bandit here in town. Haven't priced the motorcycle specific Outlaw yet.

Race car helmets are designed to take multiple knocks in the event of an 'off'. As far as I'm aware, bike helmets aren't, hence them being lighter and cheaper in most cases.

For the equivalent Dark Lord of Space look in an adv helmet, I reckon I'm gunna get one of these when they come out:

http://www.bmw-motorrad.com/com/en/products/riderspoint/helmets/helmetmodels/helmets_enduro.html

I tried on a BMW road helmet the other day & it was bloody comfortable, but it wouldn't have quite the same ability to terrify small children as the matt black enduro one.

Cheers
