View Full Version : MV Brutale R after a week

Okay, as most of you will know my other bike is an 05 CBR1000RR. Without doubt, the best of the Jap litre bikes on the market today. I'm sure we're all in agreement here. To compliment my modest bike collection, I wanted a naked bike to fill a void. I wanted something different. It had to be nimble, fast and have upgraded running gear. I thought I was onto a winner but taking 10 hours to complete the Coro loop, the Street Magic just didn’t cut the mustard. I settled for a Brutale R.

Throwing my leg over the Brutale was a strange transition. At first, it felt like a dirt bike on steroids. The riding position is more comfortable than what I'm used to, but still is plenty sporty. The Brutale's bars are narrow and the reach will have you canted slightly forward. The I4 engine screams like a bitch and the induction roar is intoxicating. The best way I can explain the sound is like an F1 car. I thought it was going to explode. It's like a pit bull except you'd never want to shoot it if it bit you. It has plenty of low-end torque and is probably over powered for my intended use, but it's nice knowing there's 136 crank ponies there if you want them. The gear ratio is close and reminded me a lot of my karting days, 1.2.3.4.5.6.5.4.3.2.3.2.3.4.3.2.1 and that’s just getting out of the driveway. It handles like nothing else I have ever ridden. While it's a good 10 kg's heavier than the CBR, it feels much lighter and loves being chucked down into the corners and I'm a lot more confident going hell for leather in the twisties on this. The suspension is out of this world. A tad bumpy on the things Transit call roads but firmly planted. Being a naked bike you have no wind protection which is really noticeable in codura gear. I'll try leather next time. The bike is also on the small side, which is good for midgets like myself. So if you are a very tall or heavy rider you may feel cramped.

The stock rubber is SuperCorser Pro's which are great in the dry but another story in the wet. I've just put some Avon Vipers on to give them a go and so far so good.

It's difficult to sum up the Brutale considering my lack of riding experience but I think the following is pretty bang on. It's 100% raw motorbike.

I think only Dover could beat it in a drinking match. Haven't quite figured it out yet but filled it up at BP Jervous then went SH16 to Wellsford and returning home, the fuel light went on at Coatsville where I stopped and put 15.5 litres in it. Nasty.

Good writings, Mr Finn! :niceone:

Humourous too.

If the fuel consumption gets too bad, apparently there's a different chip you can get for the ECU. Cheese'n'Onion flavour, I believe.

They run rich apparently. I'm waiting to hear back from MV Italy regarding a performance pipe that is supposed to come with it. If I get it, I'll throw a PC in it and that'll sort it out.

Or will it be used for surfing pron sites??:blip:

Who cares about the fuel economy... it could be a lot worse if you were driving a cage!

I know you guys miss me when I'm not online so this will keep everybody happy. I'm currently on Wellesley St and... hang on.... had to change gear.

I'm not worried about fuel economy. HC & the goonies pay for that. I just like power commanders especially the ones with the flashing lights.

Clean his leathers ! Looks like he does more mud riding than road riding.
I saw the R model Brutale last week, very nice. Good to hear you like it. There are a few MV owners running around these parts and I don't think any have had any traditional Italian breakdowns. And NO you smartarses, they haven't had new age Italian breakdowns either.

Good luck with the performance pipe too, Eyeties are often reluctant to "put things right" in the way us Kiwi's are accustomed to. I think we should send Neil Martin over to give 'em the learn. After all, it's the putting right that counts. (Was that just a welly thing??)

Still the Corsa pro's, weather is crap at the moment, but I won't be using it in the wet... think they are very good so far still in run in mode, they will be getting "used" more in a week or two.... providing the sun shines!!!
ps...Have a Fazer 1000 (FZ1) for everyday use

Got a nice couple of helmets this week one paid for and one freebie with the bike:blip:

Ps can you take a pic of your rear seat as I think the gap between seat pad and bodywork is too wide on mine...
Cheers

For some reason i'd think i'd be repaying you, but as MD said if you want to clean my leathers that'd be enough, infact you'd prolly want to clean them before i ride your bike. Everyone was asking me if i fell off during the track day, i said no no this from last week at manfeild.

The tourno got it's styling from the Raleigh 20. I looked at the Monster S4RS but it looks 10 years old. None of the jap naked bikes do it for me. I like the look of the Speed Triple but I don't look good in a mullet with tight black jeans and an oversized belt buckle. :blip:

I wanted something differant and after seeing the MV and reading the reviews I had to have one.

Bike journalists are known to be the most objective and unbiased people in the world too.
I seem to remember how they all bagged Jap bikes in the dim past. Going on about things like Laverda Jotas being the best thing since sliced bread etc etc.
Where's Laverda now?
Read 5 tests of a ZX10 and you'll get 5 different opinions.
I'd wager that if you put equal riders on a Zx10 and a CBR over a bumpy unknown road, the CBR guy will win.
