Righto, does anyone know exactly how you go about lockwiring the sump bung on an 89+ FZR1000? See, the bung itself has got another screw threaded into it. Confused?- imagine a bolt with another bolt treaded into the hex head. The small screw/bolt runs parallel to the bung.

So this rules out the option of just drilling through the hex head of the bung.

My theory is that you are supposed to use the screw as part of a locking system. Perhaps by using it to screw on a piece maleable metal which is also bolted to a solid part of the bike/engine, you then fold the edges of the bit of metal over the bung hex head to stop it from spinning. Is that right?

What you can do to make it looked locked in... (hehe)

Drill two small (not deep) holes in each side and put a cut key-ring ring into the holes... it appears that the ring goes through the bolt, and you can wire it in place.

It's not within regulation but I bet you'll pass... I did it for years

shhh....

drill a hole (0.060", or 3/32" if you can't find a thou drill) across the corner of 2 flats of the larger plug, then drill across/through the top of the smaller bung. lock the bung to the plug, then with the same lockwire, lock the plug to the engine. if you want, i can draw a sketch and post it on here. then bung is inside the larger plug to save the alloy of the sump from being damaged by cross threading etc
