So actually found one of the jokes on here funny so copied it and emailed it to some workmates, now here is the problem at the end of the joke were a couple of these things  :innocent: etc and when the email came through at their end they had changed to an image of lesbian porn with the notice NO HOTLINKING or something!

SO be careful copying stuff!

Sniper

Yep I got owned by this too... Wrote up a massive race report in the forums, and then copied it out of the forums, and emailed it to just about everyone in my contacts, approx 40 or so email addresses. And it had 2 smilies in it, so everyone got two porn pics aswell right in the middle of my write up. Was a touch embarrassed when a mate of mine pointed it out, but I got over it. Still, I could see this getting somebody into trouble at their work.

Also note, my email went to my grandparents aswell. They never commented though.

Haven't used gmail.

But I wonder where the instructions to call up the image are hidden then.
It would need a line of code with the url near the smilie - something that says (tag) a href url http://www.leso-image.jpg (/tag)

can you view source code like you can on a browser?

Oh fark, did almost exactly the same thing with a smiley in my race report. Spankme needs to change this, it aint funny having porn on your blog as a result. Put up a huge motorcycle or something instead.

You don't know SpankMe. He won't.

I know that. The worst thing is when you preview your own page it appears fine and then obviously spank's host's hotlinking software kicks in a few days later and the little smiley men turn into lesbians. Any  will do

This is extremely common practice for web server admins who're sick of their bandwitdh being stolen. Always host your own pics. A friend of mnie used a random system that generally only gave duck pictures back, but with the occasional goatse pic thrown in now and then for laughs.

The bottom line is though, stealing bandwith is bad mmmkay.

scracha
10th July 2007, 10:03
FFS, nobody intends to steal bandwidth when they post a smiley. I'd assumed it was my "own" webserver's smiley and that it had cut n' pasted " :-)" or ":smiley" or something instead of
img src="http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/images/smilies/yes.gif" title="Yes" class="inlineimg" border="0"

Pretty wank to put up porn for hotlinking. Goats, small children, helen clark, satan or whatever is fine but for some reason peeps can get upset about pron.

imdying
10th July 2007, 10:13
That people are ignorant about the fact that they're stealing bandwidth is why the server admins have to resort to things like this. Otherwise that smiley will get forwarded about maybe a million times, slowing up the hosting server, and eating away at their (costly) bandwidth. And not goats, goatse (http://goatse.cz/) (not even close to work safe).

sAsLEX
10th July 2007, 10:19
goatse (http://goatse.cz/)

To click on the link, or not to, that is not a question I would be asking at work?

imdying

Are you being deliberately obtuse or something. I'm not denying it'll suck away his bandwidth nor excusing myself for it. I'm merely stating that this is not a porn site and I don't expect porn to appear if someone accidently hotlinks to it. Does the hotlink image have to be THAT offensive? It could be an image with spank saying "don't nick my bandwidth" or whatever. The hotlinker would quickly get the point.

offencive?? Sorry, people who have a problem with the naked human body, just have a problem. Go see a shrink to get that fixed.

Here are some of the hotlink images.

I don't have a problem with the naked human body. Unfortunately not everybody shares my opinion. Peeps (especailly young ones) should be given the choice of whether they want to view naked human bodies or not. Throwing up porn when hotlinking happens from a non-porn site (accidently or not) isn't appropriate. That's my tuppenceworth, take it or leave it. It's your site not mine. End of story.

imdying

It has been a problem for years now... the nice messages haven't really make much of a dent, but as you can see from your own experience, pron makes people sit up and notice. One problem is that a antihotlink script can't readily distinguish between accidental linking or otherwise.
