View Full Version : A milestone is achieved

Brett
26th May 2006, 20:13
I realised today that I have made a true milestone in life...I chose to ride my little 250cc bike in the wet and Rain as opposed to driving my well powered Nissan 200sx that is dry, warm(managed to retain aircon when modding) comfortable and would out handle the bike in the wet or dry.

The only thing i can put this down to...is that I have become a true biker...and not a poser anymore.

Yay for me...will have to celebrate by going for a ride tomorrow.

Good on ya mate, when you do it for a whole weekend and lose feeling in certain parts -voluntarily- then you can officially be an old codger and rant on about how these young uns these days dont know what REAL biking is about:D

Been there done that a few times now. Did Aucks to Tauranga in a huge downpour that seemed to follow me, the Karanghake Gorge was a nightmare, and then hand the same thing on the way back. Same deal a few times to Hamilton and Back, but that is hardly a decent ride at all.
The worst bit is when the water finally penetrates the cordura and starts running down the arms, back and neck...not cool...not cool at all.

Riding every day, no matter what the weather is the only way to go.

i'd say, sell the car and put it into savings for your next bike (those zx14's are expensive) !

Brett
27th May 2006, 11:05
Yeah I am contemplating selling it to fund a zx6r...or could use the savings...will have to see.
I know some of you will not like this...but i want to hang onto the car, it hauls ass and is a good load of fun to drive. But I would be lying if I didn't admit that the thought of selling it and buying a 636 with all the goodies doesn't make me feel a little overly excited.

Do it, cars a for people who cant ride. (work cars/trucks excluded)

An S14 out handeling a ZXR250?? You sure? I think you have too little confidence in your bike matey. Although the car may be powerful and fast on the straights, there is a limit to how much power an S14 can put to the ground and drifting means losing speed (depending). In the right places your bike would piss on the car.

BTW, well done on become a true biker :)

A factory S14, I would agree with you, but mine has got suspension upgrades and puts a shitload of rubber to the ground, 255 Eagle F1's on the rear and 235 F1's on the front. Those tyres are the shit, even in the wet they are amazing. Expensive as hell though.

Yeah, drift slows you down alright and it roots the chassis. Only in small doses. There are also very few SAFE places that proper drift can be sought...i.e. sideways before a corner, obviously needs to be a place where there wont be an oncoming vehicle to collect.

I have ridden the ZXR on most types of roads now, and can push it really quite hard, i have got to the point where i try and get faster and lower, but the back tyre slides, or sometimes the front a little bit...thats enough to crap the pants!

I have a pretty good idea on my entry and exit speeds, and know for a fact that I can do them much higher in the cage.

I know I need to play with the bikes suspension settings a bit more, the front has too much preload...so this might make a difference.

The feeling of cornering a bike fast is just a pure RAW feeling of adrenaline. I love it.

You need to play with them alot if the car has a massively higher corner speed compared to the bike (also rider too remember), granted a properly set up car with race suspension and race tyres will out handle a bike mid corner (by a bit), a s14 shouldn't have it over a zx2r by too much or at all when it's set up properly. One of my 'car enthusiast' mates was going on about how he could take a particular 35k corner at around 50 in his subey. My bike does around that in the WET, 80-85 in the dry with a mediocre stab at it... but that is probably not the best example. Lines play a big part of that corner (and others) and that's why I think the bike has the advantage on that corner in question, come in wide apex and exit wide, - the car can't do that at all really without breaking the law.

I'd love to get better and see what that s14 can do though, I'm sure we can sort something out ;)

i rode home last night on the cold wet dark rammed SH1.
still rather ride that drive in comfort.
my wife thinks i'm mad.
my 2 year old understands though.

Nah your wrong. Its a very difficult thing to compare a car to a bike, as they are differnt. but this has been debated on here LOTS of times and the answer is always "its too hard"

Exactly right, I would much rather enjoy anything fast and excilerating than choose only one. They both have their own good points.

'Cause it's a 200SX, mate! :blip: And a hotted one too! Nice wheels. Even the cops had them on trial as pursuit cars down the Waikato way a few years ago! CAn understand your reluctance to sell it!

Yea maybe, but its still a car...
Cant lean over in cars, well I do but now my wife won’t let me drive!

Brett
28th May 2006, 01:17
they lean over a bit too much factory...body roll. SOme decent Coil Overs or high end springs with braces everywhere and the leaning stops...and the control begins.
That is probably one of the best things about the bike...the leaning. That and wheelies and stoppies...all be it very limited still.

Knowing my luck I will!

Yep time to grow up, get sensible and insure myself

it is a nice feeling when you are riding even in the wet and you are happier than being in a cage....

I realised today that I have made a true milestone in life...I recall reaching that milestone in my motorcycling, especially overcoming the reluctance of wet weather riding. I too own a car as well as a bike, the car is *necessary* sometimes, but i don't compare my 'driving' with my 'riding' because i simply don't drive that fast whereas on the bike i'm gone!! :bye:

The only thing i can put this down to...is that I have become a true biker...and not a poser anymore.Fair enuf...but when you're ready to step on to a 600 or thou you'll probly realise that you're still indeed a poser! :blip:

I rode a cbr from tauranga to auckland for a mate, at night, in a storm, while he drove behind listening to the radio(no bike license). Wouldn't have traded places with him if he wanted me to :D I must be nuts... :wari:
