For those on here who use Norton Anti-Virus or Norton Internet Security, I found a great deal yesterday.
My subscription to Norton Anti-Virus was due to run out, and I wanted to upgrade to Internet Security. As I'm on dial up I couldn't be bothered to do it on line so I called into Dick Smith to purchase a boxed copy of Internet Security 2006. Now here's the good bit. If you upgrade or renew by buying a boxed copy rather than doing it online, Symatec are giving you back $30 off the purchase price. That makes it much cheaper than re-newing or upgrading on-line.
This deal lasts until the end of the year.

I had the same sort of problem. I went to www.download.com and bought spysweeper online - I have had no problems since. It backs up Norton really well.

The price at Dick Smith was $99.98, so with $30 back that makes it $69.98.

If you've got a student handy there is an academic version of norton, same thing but cheaper :niceone:
edit: I think it was around the same $60-$70

Thanks for that Malcome. My NAV subs are due in less than 30days. Just looked on Norton New Zealand. To upgrade from NAV 2005 to Norton AntiVirus 2006 was quoted as NZ$50.0* ( * stated that tax may apply) as a download or package. Norton Internet Security 2006 Upgrade + BONUS Norton SystemWorks 2006 Basic Upgrade Bundle as a download or package NZ$89.9* ( * stated that tax may apply).

Anything Norton is a massive resource hog and should be ditched.
The amount of people who ask me why their machine is running so slow when its a 3Gig+ with plenty of ram.....its always that piece of shit Nortons slowing it all down.
Run a low resource Antivirus like an early version of Trend PC-Cillin or NOD32 or whatever, use a different browser and email client than the usual shitbox Microsoft stuff. Say Opera, Firefox etc, and Thunderbird for mail. Also use Adaware for catching the odd thing and you should be set.

Yip - Norton stuff is all bloat ware
If you want free stuff that is pretty good try
avg or antivir both work really.
For spyware try adaware or microsoft's beta antispy ware product they both are pretty good.
Moving from Internet Exploder to Firefox I think you'll help reduce the rate you collect spyware and plus it is quicky and has more features.
But for the ultimate fix put a copy of Linux on instead of Windoze. :first:

I've thought about ditching Norton at various times but have heard a few horror stories about the difficulty in uninstalling it completely and what's left interfering with whatever new anti-virus platform is installed. Anyone have any comment on this?
BTW I shelled out a few bucks and upgraded to Ad-Aware SE Plus. Constant monitoring and auto updating is great.

Nah, shouldn't be a problem. Just be sure to uninstall it properly and let it restart when prompted. I've uninstalled it off possibly hundreds of PC's/Notebooks and never had any issues.
Sounds more like an Urban myth spread by Norton ;)
Ad-aware is pretty good. Secret to not getting viruses is to know what sort of sites help propogate them....
Searching for MP3's, Software cracks etc always seem to take you to some dodgy page with a auto installer.
If you need that sort of stuff, go to a torrent search and get it that way.

I use Nortons av. Its not the best but it does the job.
Nod32 and trend would be the good ones to pick from at the moment.
Also Symantec was hacked the other day
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/409980.stm
use firefox.
also i find that ewido is awsome for picking up spyware. better than adaware and spybot most of the time.

Norton Internet Security is one of the biggest reasons I get people complaining about being unable to connect to the internet. Also a major cause of people complaining that their computer is slow. Unnecessary when AVG or Avast are free and significantly less bloated. I've started recommending avast to everyone that complains now.

I know next to nothing 'bout 'puters, but I've run Antivir since my free 3 months of Norton ran out and have had no problems at all.And the first time I ran it, it picked up several viruses the Norton had missed.
And the latest version updates every time the PC is turned on.

i always use to use avg on all machines i build but i found avast. which is far superior over all, since avg is just a antiviruis, avast is antiviruis, firewall, for im, p2p, etc.
its free for private use, you have to reinstall once a year, but thats nothing major over all.
run two spyware programs spybot, and adware, but one of the best ways to stop web virus is start using firefox.
All above products are free,

Give that man a DB.
Dump Norton. Install Opera or Firefox as free alternatives to Internet Explorer.
If you want free antivirus and spysweeping:
Avast, Trend or AVG.
Adaware
Spybot.
Zonealarm
If you are prepared to pay a small amount:
Nod32
Spysweeper

My NAV subscription ran out so I upgraded to Internet Security. Like others have said, it's a great resource hog and I've since uninstalled it. Waste of money!! My almost 4yr old Toshiba Portege still performs great, now running NOD32... not about to upgrade it just to run NIS!!

Is best ta uninstall NAV, or can I get away with just changing it's settings as I trail Avast? Don't want ta stop using NAV until I've got avast sus'ed and am happy with it.

Dump it. Norton will conflict with other antivirus and cause problems. Understand your caution but honestly - uninstal it. You won't be sorry.

I second this sugestion, I remove viruses for a living and use this combo. Never fails. Also check out an antivirus called Norman. Norton is a clumsy large beast of a thing that slows PC's into the ground.

Yeah, if it's for non-commercial use then Avast is the one to choose at the momment.
Commercial anti-virus...probably Nod32 (maybe with Kerio Firewall). For a whole security suite then McAffee Internet Security.
Pete Norton's beast has gotten too bloated and it's now a cobbled together pieceof $hit.
PM me if you want a KB discount on Nod32
